Triggers: Omega Verse, Alpha Gabriel/Omega Dean, sickness
Being an Omega nurse on an Alpha only floor was something that wasn't for the faint of heart nor did even remotely resemble the tv ads that promoted the career path where every nurse wore a big smile and was overly perky. Still despite the fact that most Alphas were hostile and only seen the Beta and Omega nurses as eye candy for their stay duration, Dean loved his job. In fact it filled that empty spot that had been left behind when Adam had gone off to college leaving Dean with a case of empty nest syndrome despite the fact that Adam; or Sam for that matter; were his own pups. Having raised them for the most of their young lives his inner Omega had accepted them as his own pups and the fact that he had to let both the young Alpha's start their own lives left him feeling like he'd been hollowed out. His best friend Charlie had been the one to push him into taking nursing classes after he'd admitted that he'd found some of Adam's pre-college classes dealing with medicine interesting. Soon he'd found himself enrolled in a nursing program and enjoying the sense of pride and fulfillment that came with it.
It was a night like any other, Dean was going over the duty roster and reading some charts in the break room when Meg; another Omega nurse on the Alpha ward floor stuck her head in the room.
"Heads up Ken doll there's an admittance coming in and they're giving him to you."
"Do we know what's wrong?"
"Seeing as how he's coming up here, could be anything from the dreaded "Alpha flu" to a feral."
"Alpha flu." Dean snorted as he stood up and stretched. "It's nothing more than the regular flu."
"Eh, it is but don't tell them that. They'll think we're not taking their pain seriously."
They shared a look then laughed before Meg left the room. A glance at the clock showed that Dean still had five hours in his shift and he made his way towards the nurses desk. As he reached the desk the the elevator opened an Alpha in a wheel chair was pushed towards him. The Alpha in question looked a little pale though he had bright red color to his cheeks and his eyes seemed to be glassy. Pushing the man from behind was another Alpha, this one appearing to be the same height as Dean and with dark hair and blue eyes. Smiling Dean waited for them to get close before speaking.
"Hello, I'm Nurse Winchester. What brings you two in tonight?"
"Hello, I'm Castiel Novak and this is my brother Gabriel." The man behind the chair said as he motioned to the seated Alpha. "He's running a fever, is dehydrated and hasn't been able to keep any food down for 24 hours."
"I take it the ER department sent you both up here?" When Castiel nodded he reached into his pocket and pulled out a thermometer strip and pressed it against the seated Alpha's forehead. "Did they say what they think it might be?"
"They thought it was strep throat."
The tone of the other Alpha's voice had Dean looking at him with an arched eyebrow; apparently the man didn't think that was the problem. Taking the strip away he grabbed a clip board from the nurses station and jotted down the temperature; 102; before taking out a tiny flashlight and checking the seated Alpha's pupil.
"Tell me Cas, what do you think it is?" He asked as he clipped the flashlight to the collar of his scrubs then gently took the man's wrist to check the pulse there.
"My brother has been on rut suppressants for a long time. I've been trying to get him to stop taking them, but he says that he doesn't have time to deal with the interruption to his life that ruts cause every month. I did some reading online and he's showing some of the symptoms of suppressant rejection."
Dean blinked in surprise before looking back at the seated Alpha, he appeared out of it; his eyes not really tracking anything and his breathing shallow and raspy. He'd had a few suppression rejection cases over the years but those Alpha's had been more angry, nearly feral as their hormones jumped from one extreme to another in a bid to regulate themselves.
"How long is a long time Cas?" He asked as he scribbled down the information on his clipboard.
"Pretty much since he presented."
"How long ago was that?"
"Twenty-five years ago..."
Dean could only stare at the blue eyed Alpha before he motioned for him to follow him to a room that was the closes t to the nurses station. With Castiel's help he got Gabriel into the bed and stripped down to his underwear and dressed in a hospital gown. Dean had just gotten the last of the monitors connected when Gabriel's hand flashed out and clamped down on his wrist and held tight. Unsure of what was going to happen Dean started to push out calming pheromones.
"H-hey there Gabriel.." He said, his voice low as he focused on the Alpha even as he waved his other hand at Castiel to keep him back. "M'name is Dean, I'm here to help. Can you tell me about yourself.."
He wasn't really looking for an answer, he was just talking to try and get the Alpha to respond and hopefully break through whatever haze was currently taking up residence in the man's head. Gabriel tilted his head as he started at Dean and Dean had to admit that the man's eyes under any other circumstance would be extremely hypnotic with their amber color. Gabriel's eyebrows drew together in confusion and Dean stilled completely as he waited for the Alpha's next move. Instead of speaking or making a move Gabriel's eyes closed and the man's hand fell away from Dean's wrist. From that moment on time both seemed to speed past and stand completely still as Dean moved through his procedures. He was faintly aware of Castiel behind him as he worked and at one point he thought he heard Meg talking to the other Alpha but he wasn't sure nor did he really care as he focused on the Alpha in front of him.
Slowly Gabriel started to come too and Dean allowed himself to let out a small huff of relief and he reached over to grab his clipboard and jot down the little movements and changes. He looked over and with a small smile brushed some of Gabriel's hair away from his forehead, his fingers lingering slightly on the flushed skin. Gabriel's fever had started to drop and Dean could only hope that that meant a good thing rather than a swing in the absolute opposite direction for the Alpha.
"Mm'I in heaven?" Gabriel rasped as his eyes slowly fluttered open.
"Sorry but no. You're very much still part of this mortal coil." Dean replied as he took his flashlight and checked Gabriel's eyes again, jotting down the movements. "You're in the hospital Mr. Novak. Your brother Cas brought you in, seems as if you're going through some suppressant rejection. Can you tell me the brand you've been taking?"
"Alph-x."
"I see. And about how long have you been taking that?"
"Probably longer than you've been alive Pretty Boy."
Dean rolled his eyes before pinning Gabriel with his best no-nonsense look; one eyebrow arched as he pointed his pen at him. Of all the paths the Alpha could have taken Dean was thankful for the fact that he'd chosen flirtatious rather than angry and confrontational.
"I'm older than I look. Can't help I have good genes." Dean retorted before tapping Gabriel's chest lightly with his pen. "But seriously, how long have you been taking Alph-x?"
Gabriel exhaled loudly before speaking. "I've been on them for twenty-seven years. I started them my senior year in high school. I needed to stay on the shorter and lighter side to keep my speed up on the soccer team and I just never stopped. Life is pretty good when you don't have to plan for a week and half a month where you're sweaty and horny enough to fuck a pie if you have one."
"Ok, one: I never want to hear you talk about pie like that again. That sacrilege. Two: your body needs a break from time to time, you have to let your body go through a normal cycle at least every couple years or else you're setting yourself up for serious medical problems." Dean jotted something down on the clipboard in his hand before fixing Gabriel with a look. "So you've never had a rut, this is not going to be pleasant for you. It's probably going to be the roughest week you've ever had. It can be a bit easier with a partner, do you have one that we can call?"
Dean watched as color crept up Gabriel's throat to settle in his cheeks and he had to remind his Omega that now wasn't the time to find the Alpha adorable. Making sure that his face was set in a professional expression he quirked an eyebrow as he waited for a verbal answer.
"No." Gabriel finally answered, his eyes down cast.
"Well there's no shame in that. We have a few Omegas on retainer that can help you through the worst of it." The words stuck a little in his throat and Dean mentally snarled at his Omega to stand down. "We're going to put you in a private room where you'll have shower and plenty of...aides if you don't want an Omega to assist you."
Seeing that Gabriel wasn't going to answer anything beyond what he had already Dean finished filling out the paperwork on the clipboard and then turned to leave. Once more Gabriel reached out and grabbed his wrist and Dean turned to look at the Alpha.
"Will you be here after?"
"You mean after your Rut?" Gabriel nodded and Dean gave the Alpha a small smile. "Of course. I'll be here until you're ready to go home."
Gabriel didn't say anything further, nor did he let go of Dean's wrist; instead he brought it to his face and rubbed against it. Dean could only watch as Gabriel scent marked himself thoroughly before letting his wrist go. In his chest his Omega was purring and he had to work hard to keep the smile from his face that wanted to erupt. Apparently satisfied Gabriel fell back to sleep and Dean let himself out of the room only to lean back against the door once he closed it behind him.
"I'm in trouble." He murmured as he brought his wrist to his nose and caught the faint scent of the Alpha; notes of caramel that made his mouth water. "I'm in so much trouble."
