superhero shenanigans
Danny twisted his combination into the locker and swung it open with a light pull, old photos of Sam and Tucker stuck to the metal wall reminding him of what he's missing out on as he pulled out his bag and slung it over his shoulder.
The last bell rang as students poured out of classrooms, filling the halls with hundreds of teenagers all trying to just go home and or meet up with friends.
They spoke, laughed, occasionally pushed until they all began flooding out the main doors.
Danny stood just outside, one hand around the strap of his backpack and the other tightly holding his phone as he stared at his text.
Danny
Where are u?
The other day the random intern (who's name Danny discovered was Peter) invited him to go to some small little sandwich corner store and grab something to eat while heading to the tower after school.
After having to mentally fight himself to get the confidence to walk up to him, the kid introduced himself first. Anticlimactic but a win is a win.
He stood anxiously waiting for the boy to arrive where he said they'd meet up, looking around at the crowd of kids walking to buses and parents cars.
Eventually he saw a smiling face waving to him through the crowd, a red and white sweater that looked a bit to big, baggy jeans and roughed up shoes that looked like they were falling apart.
"Hey Danny" the boy finally caught up to him moving his hand through his hair as it was messed up from running.
"Hey," Danny gave a small wave back, and they both went on their way.
Peter was talkative, not that Danny minded. He actually enjoyed listening to his day and the thousands of things that he got sidetracked on, but eventually he paused with pink cheeks.
"Sorry- uh that must have been annoying"
"Not really man, I don't have much to say anyway, I'm just glad your letting me tag along." he admitted trying to act cool, opening the door to the corner store and jokingly gesturing his arm for Pete to go first.
"Ladies first,"
"Oh how gentlemanly" he put a sarcastic hand to his chest as he walked inside, Danny letting the door close behind them listening to the little bell jingle above the door.
A greying man stood leaned behind the counter, an apron hanging by his neck and down the front of his body covered in what looked like bread crumbs and different condiments.
"Morning, who's this?" he called out smiling, sounding surprised that Peter brought along a new face.
Danny waved awkwardly once more as Peter greeted him like an old friend, they must have known each other for a while.
"This is Danny, Danny this is Mr Delmar"
After they were introduced Peter moved on ordering "the usual" this time with extra pickles and putting gummy worms on the counter.
He turned to Danny, "what do you want?" he pointed to the menu.
As Danny was about to pull out his own wallet he felt a hand stop him,
"Nah it's chill, Mr stark is technically paying for it so get whatever you want." he held up a hundred dollar bill, the type Danny thought only existed in cartoons.
He wasn't normally the type of person to let others pay for him, but when it's a billionaire doing it then fuck yeah.
He got a sandwich of his own, chips candy and a large soda, the food haul of his dreams.
His mouth watered as they payed and ran across the street giggling with arms full of food, cars honked at the jaywalking teens but they paid no attention.
They came to a regular walk again heading back to the tower, the front doors sliding open as Peter called out near the front desk greeting that ginger women Danny bumped into the day before.
She smiled at the boys with red lips that matched her hair nicely, her dress hugging her body making her look beautifully professional.
Peter called her Ms Potts, it seemed like he knew everybody.
In the elevator he was already Devouring his sandwich, he could honestly barely remember the last time he had one, last he remembered his mom made his favourite in the shape of a dinosaur for elementary school.
But this was much better, the perfect amount of mayo with his cheese and meat and lettuce just dancing on his taste buds nearly bringing him to tears.
Or maybe that was just the peppers, he really liked spicy stuff.
"Hey Mr Stark!" Peter put the bag down on the table in the lab, his mentor without even looking putting his hand out making a childish "gimme" motion with his hands.
"Candy tax." he said without turning away from his work, Peter tossing the gummy worms with impressive precision right into his hand.
"Nice throw" Danny said muffled with the last bite of his sandwich stuffed into his mouth, he was about to pull out a chair to start eating his chips when Peter put a hand on his shoulder whispering so Tony couldn't hear.
"Wait wait- I know a cool spot we can eat at," he smirked grabbing the bag and looking back at his boss to make sure his eyes were glued to his project.
Danny followed him to the rooftop stairwell, Peter ignored an employee only sign taped to it and stuck a key inside the lock.
"Ta-da!" the door swung open and Danny squirmed where he stood.
The grey stairwell was dark, something out of a horror movie with spiderwebs moving in a small windy draft from the door.
He squinted hard trying to see inside as Peter started up the steps, "you go up here often?" he asked following behind, his voice echoed.
"Yeah all the time, one of the Avengers gave me the key."
"No way"
"Yes way,"
The two climbed their way up, the rickety railing was left untouched out of fear it would break and fall down, the concrete steps looked like they were slowly chipping away.
The rooftop was nearly empty, Danny held in a gasp as he saw the set up Peter had made.
A blanket rested on the floor held down by books, comics, the same Sci-fi action stuff he loved.
There was an old DS sitting on the ground next to them with different games in a clear plastic case consisting of Mario kart, Nintendogs, animal crossing, Mii games you name it.
"This is actually the coolest shit I've ever seen"
Peter invited him to sit and the two ate together, sharing candy and chips as the sun started getting low.
"You just hangout up here all day?" Danny asked
"When I'm not... Uhh.. Working.. Yeah"
"Worm" he nodded as he tilted his chip bag to him.
"Want one?"
Peter shook his head, "nah, I don't like that flavor"
"Salt and vinegar is bomb dude, your missing out."
"Get barbeque like the rest of us." Peter joked playfully shoving him.
Who knows how long past, the sun definitely got lower, Peter was actually really cool to talk to, Danny got lost in conversation for hours.
Peter then glanced at Dannys watch before cussing and picking up his trash, stuffing it into the bag they got at the corner store.
"Crap- I gotta go.. Do something- it was cool hanging out! See you tomorrow!"
Danny just watched the boy rush downstairs again, leaving him wondering if he'd be locked out since Peter was the only one with a key.
The silence soon got deafening, and his soda grew room temperature.
He still had yet to fly around for a bit before heading home.
Might as well, he thought.
He went ghost right on the roof, letting his body fall over the edge with his arms stretched like wings as he closed his eyes letting the wind touch his skin.
Catching himself just before hitting the ground he flew past cars stuck in traffic, pedestrians walking the sidewalks before flying high and letting himself look around for something to do.
He turned to the sound of shouting kids, like little kids maybe nine or ten all running around a basketball court tossing a ball around.
One girl caught it, trying to pass the ball to her teammate to no avail as a boy on the other team knocked it into the air, right over the fence into the road.
"Nice job Ollie!" the girl shouted sassily as everyone crowded around the fence watching as it only rolled further.
Danny quickly flew down, a car speeding towards the ball nearly hit him as he grabbed it just in time, phasing through the fence and tossing it smiling.
"Got it!" he watched as the children all stood for a moment, quiet.
"Thanks!" the boy that girl called Ollie picked up the ball dribbling it and then suddenly passing it back to Phantom as everyone cheered.
"I like your hair!" the girl gently put a hand around his arm smiling looking up at him, he gave one back in return as he flicked his head.
"Oh this old thing? It's all natural, thanks for noticing" he balanced the ball on his pointer finger, the children all ooh'd in amazement watching his tricks.
He tossed the ball up before flipping in the air and catching it,
"I'd love to stay and absolutely destroy you all in a game, but I got things to do and people to save."
He shrugged throwing the ball back to one of the kids, Ollie looked up at him jumping in place excitedly.
"Are you a super hero!?" he asked and Phantom let out a snort.
"Hell yeah I am! Im Phantom, call me if you ever need help." he saluted the kids goodbye, flying away as they all waved shouting loud goodbyes.
Danny quickly got busy, fighting a ghost rat and actually winning this time catching it in the Fenton Thermos he kept around his waist, making a mental note to toss it back in the ghost zone later.
As he was turning the corner out of the alley he was in he heard a familiar "thwip" and snapped his head in the direction.
"Spidey!" he called out to his friend flying to catch up to the swinging spider.
His masked eyes grew wide in surprise, shooting another web to pull himself down onto the side of a building, thumping against the glass as Phantom put his hands behind his head floating under his face.
"Crazy how we keep running into each other like this, are you following me?" he sang sarcastically, smirking as spiderman laughed out loud.
"You wish ghost boy, if anything you've been the one following me."
"Maybe I have" he didn't deny, booping Spidey on the nose sticking his tongue out.
In response Spidey flipped off the wall, gracefully leaping over Phantom and catching his body with a web continuing his swing.
"Where ya' going!?" Danny shouted after him, laughing as his arms stretched out once more, following his friend who danced in the air by phasing through buildings just to keep up.
"Unlike you I have places to be!" Spider-man let out a loud woop webbing a billboard and pulling himself onto the top of it, using his arms to launch himself back into the air.
"What do you think I do all day? I also have places to be I'll have you know!"
"Ohreally?"
His friend thumped against the glass of a building once more, running to the top with Phantom flying vertically right next to him, the two looked at each other with wide smiles from the chase.
Danny flipped mid air when reaching the top, letting out a loud excided shout echoing through the large city buildings.
But no witty response, no cheering along with him, in fact there wasn't the sound of his new friend landing safely at all.
He turned back, facing the ground he once flew up and away from, his heart skipping a beat and falling out of his chest seeing his red and blue buddy falling back down, no webs attached.
"Oh shit!" he yelled and dashed back down, his hand reached as far as he could.
"Shit shit shit-!"
The ground grew closer filling him with dread, there's no way his first superpowered friend was gonna die the second time they met.
It happened in mer seconds, Spidey flinging himself to the side saving himself last minute landing on a lamp post, Danny screaming as he put up a hand and went intangible as he wasn't able to stop himself from flying into the ground.
It took a moment to actually register in his mind what happened, his eyes peaked back up above ground as he saw his new friend holding his stomach loudly howling in laughter.
"You absolute dick! That was good!"
"Why'd you panic so hard!?" he let out a loud snort reaching under his mask to wipe his eyes, spending a small second to fix it afterwards.
"Jesus man! I know ghosts are cool but you don't need to risk becoming one!" Danny made his way out of the ground, making himself tangible again.
"I thought you had places to be," he added, crossing his legs pretending to sit on solid ground.
"I could say the same to you ghost boy, don't you have people to scare and places to haunt?"
"Nah that stuffs getting old, I'm into the superhero business now."
"Oh are you?" Phantom could sense the smirk in those words, people passed below them, some snapping pictures others just pointing at the two hero's.
Noticing quite the crowd gathering Danny realized gaining popularity might only lead to trouble as much as he missed it, it never gave him anything good in the past that's for certain.
"Why don't we continue our little fly around? Avoid the paparazzi you and I?"
"I thought ghosts didn't show on film"
"You know what I'm gonna say,"
"Your not like other ghosts" he stood on the street lamp, hands on his hips now face to face with the white haired ghost.
An idea flashed in his head, he grabbed Spidey under his arms flying high to the top of a building as Spidey flailed.
"Oh shit-! Wha- hey hey!" he panicked and squirmed as Phantom laughed,
"Your acting like you've never been this high!" he gently let Spidey go when they were alone,
"I'm used to swinging not flying! A little warning next time would he nice."
"No promises" Phantom shrugged floating down and sitting on the edge with his legs swinging back and fourth, spiderman joining next to him with his legs Criss crossed over each other.
"What's your deal man?" he lifted his mask over his nose showing a slight smile.
"You trying to be friends or what?"
"That's exactly what I'm doing" Phantom admitted roughly patting him on the back for finally understanding, nearly pushing him over the edge.
The sun casted a dim yellow light over the whole city, lights from inside buildings and the cars driving below illuminated brighter in the slight darkness.
He heard another small laugh from his friend, he leaned back resting his hands behind him catching the weight of his body.
"Seriously, What is your deal? What makes you so different from any other ghost?" he began. "I get your friendlier, and you definitely look different but.. Why?"
Because he's half human, "because I'm magic"
"Arent all ghosts technically magic?"
"No that's a stereotype, ghosts are supernatural, I'm just more super than everyone else."
"Yeah it was pretty super when a million of you guys came through that portal and started attacking people."
"I had no involvement in that your honor!," he lifted his hands in defence, it was true he wasn't there, and he actually had no idea what that was about.
He just remembered his parents panicking at the TV, mostly down South of new York ghosts were flooding out from who knows where, he knows they wished they could have been there to help, Danny thought about flying over to kick butt but the whole event stopped in maybe an hour.
People got hurt, a few even died that day, but the ghosts scattered all over the city in sewers, abandoned buildings, old subway tunnels; anywhere it seemed like no alive person wanted to go. Since then there have been very little sightings.
Danny blinked finding himself lost in thought, turning back to Spidey keeping that cool smile on his face.
"What about you? You seem pretty weird to, webhead."
"Yeah thanks" he remarked, "I dunno what your expecting but I'm not as amazing as I might seem."
"Oh you're totally an alien or something."
"How'd you know?" his eyes squinted hard, before they both giggled to themselves for a while.
The talk ran dry for a moment, both sitting waiting for the other to say or mention something just watching the sun get lower before the whole sky was a beautiful ombre orange, slowly fading more into a deep blue.
The stars covered with clouds and light pollution, another reason Danny hated new York, most of the time the stars were forced to hide.
His red friend finally faced him again, tearing his eyes away from the floor to end the silence.
"I have a feeling your not gonna leave me alone for a while, so... See you tomorrow? Maybe?" he asked, Danny of course waving a hand acting clueless.
"Perhaps, I'll check my schedule and get back to you."
That got a laugh and a playful shove,
"Shut up, I know damn well we both got nothing to do."
"see ya' Webby."
"Buh-bye Casper"
Flying away seeing his friend swing the opposite way he felt.. Accomplished? Fulfilled maybe?
He made two friends after he said he was gonna make one, that's something to celebrate over, right?
