Chapter 2
“Who the fuck put you two on the list!?” The two girls looked every where except into Tank’s direction, Tori acting as casual as possible.
“Going behind my back?” The burly man paced slowly atop a platform, a small circle that rose only a few inches above the ground. It almost seemed like a small sized concrete stage.
“When am I going to start getting word about this shit, damn it.” He mumbled gruffly. The tall man stopped, grasping the bridge of his nose in annoyance.
“You two know I don’t mind if you come along,” He pointed at them firmly.
“Just, someone fucking let me know next time.” And with that, it wasn’t too bad.
Tank seemingly had a soft spot for the girls, having come into the compound around the same time they did, and going on numerous runs together. He knew they were some of the strongest assets they had on the teams.
“Wednesday captains,” Tank whipped his hand up.
“Front and center, please.” Two runners who usually captained during the weekdays hopped up, standing on either side of Tank.
On the left stood Tyler, a thirty-something who used to play a lot of sports. His run style was more aggressive and confrontational. You run with Tyler, you’re playing the direct game.
On the right was a shorter girl, platinum hair pulled into a tight bun who had softer features on her face, but a stern look nonetheless. Her name was Mal, Tori thinks. She had only done a couple of runs on her team prior, she was more stealthy and quiet when scavenging.
“Today’s going to be a little bit different here,” Tank stated, eyeing the crowd of runners.
“As you may have heard, Shapiro has been MIA for a few days.” Everybody looked around at each other, realizing that Robbie had in fact been gone for far too long. It wasn’t uncommon for groups of people to stay out on a run for a bit longer than the others, but never more than a day over. Tori glanced at her partner, seeing her look down at her boots for a moment, scuffing them against the pavement.
“So while we’re out there, keep your detective pants on, yeah?” Tank looked for confirmation, receiving a few nods and ‘yes sir’s.
It was a usual route, being just outside of the city limits, it only took about half an hour to drive the survivors to the city’s outskirts.
They hid their vehicles around some brush and debris before they gathered around one of the city’s exits. Tori looked at the familiar sign, “Welcome To Los Angeles”, it read. Blood splatters and dirt lined the metal, the grass below it dead and overgrown.
“Captains, you’re going to lead two groups. Split up evenly.” Tank said, continuing to camouflage their vehicles as he did so. Tori was dragged over to Mal’s side quickly, the goth girl pulling on her wrist. After all of the people were divided, they turned to their captains.
“Alright,” Mal started whilst adjusting the strap of her backpack.
“I’m Mal if you don’t know me, I like dogs, baseball, and not dying.” Everyone nodded in agreement, there was something they all had in common at least.
“Now, the route is simple,” She signaled for everyone to huddle around the hood of a nearby broken down car. Her callused hands spread a makeshift map atop of the vehicle, pointing along the drawings.
“We are here,” Tori’s eyes followed the captain’s finger.
“We’ll go through the alley ways and stick to the shadows. If you can get to the roofs,” She pointed to some buildings on the map.
“Then be my fucking guest, just don’t snap your neck, ‘kay?” Everyone kinda nodded silently, Mal letting out a small sigh. She handed out earpieces that worked on a battery system in which Tori looped through her under shirt and into her back pocket. Before Robbie had gone missing, he had set up the compound with some tech stuff like this.
“Let’s stay safe out there guys, grab whatever you can, and get home.” She folded the map back up and put it in her pack. Tori side-eyed a look at Jade, seeing her pick at her nails briefly. She always seemed so calm and careless on the outside, and the brunette kinda envied that.
The two stayed close together, choosing to take a familiar route inbetween some buildings. The sounds of the city were nonexistent, only a light breeze whistling some brush around. Occasionally, a distant groan would reverberate against the brick, sending a brief chill down the girl’s spine.
Jade led in front of her, keeping their sides a few inches from the wall to their right. Tori let her hand graze it as they hurried through the alley. Suddenly, Jade stopped, raising her own hand into a closed fist. Tori nodded, halting her movements and being as still as possible.
The goth girl jutted two digits, pointing twice towards a fence line that was off in the distance. It seemed quite a few different zombies were huddled around a broken ladder, clawing at it and climbing over each other. By the looks of it, they knew something — or someone — was up that ladder. Tori counted over ten zees or so.
Jade checked her corners, as the alley way began to come to an end, but an opening down another way was around to their right hand side. She seemed to glance at the distant fence line before motioning to their right with a silent head tilt.
The brunette followed closely behind, walking as quickly and quietly as possible. The two found themselves picking into a back door to what seemed to be a small convenient store.
Upon entering, she could see Jade immediately lock on to an unsuspecting walking corpse. It swayed and moaned, bumping into a wall with a small thud, over and over again. He was dressed as a police officer, which he was most likely to be in his past life. But none of that matters now.
Watching on, she saw the other girl move with practiced ease, grasping the zombie from behind, and pushing her scissors into the back of its head. It was quick and fluid, the corpse falling to the ground and beginning to pool dark, brown liquid by their feet. Tori winced. You never really get used to the smell.
They cleared the rest of the shop, the front windows and door being boarded up, and rotting bodies of customers or possibly the owners of the store were within the aisles.
Once it seemed the area was secure, Tori raised a brow.
“What’s our team name?” She asked her friend, beginning to mindlessly sort through some items behind a counter. She heard a sigh from within one of the aisles, along with some rustling.
“Don't know, don’t care.” Shaking her head, the brunette tapped into her ear piece.
“This is team Wega, check in.” Tori heard Jade snort.
“Way-ga? Really?”
“What? It’s West and Vega.”
“No, is it? Good job, Catherine Obvious.”
“You only get to use that once a year,” The Latina barked back, a bit offended.
“Damn.” Jade stated with a sarcastic type of sadness. After a moment, she decided to help the goth girl a bit more. Scanning some shelves, she shoved non perishables into her pack. She found some cans of fruit, veggies, and some noodle packs. While she was beginning to pack some bottles of Tylenol she found, her ear piece crackled for a moment.
“Team Wega, this is Mal,” Tori and Jade visibly calmed a bit. It was always stressful when no one answered after a while, it can be scary to assume if anything happened, or if it was a signal issue. The feed crackled once more before clearing up.
“State your current status.” Jade usually had Tori do the talking, she preferred to do the scavenging more and Tori was a people person, it worked out.
She glanced around for a second, wiping her hands on her jeans. She tapped her ear piece once more.
“Safe within a building right now, found some cans and bottles of stuff, the usual.”
“Ten-four. Let me know when you’re on your way back.”
“Copy.” The brunette made her way through some more aisles, grabbing a few things but only filling her pack a small bit. She rifled through it while walking over to the other girl.
“Did you find much?” Looking up, she saw Jade shake her head.
“Not really,” She began sticking her hands into her own bag, checking around as well.
“Just like, bandaids and shit.” She shrugged. Tori nodded before siding up beside the pale girl. She leaned back onto the counter, Jade pulling herself on top of it and sitting there.
“Do you think Robbie’s okay?” Tori uttered in a small voice. She heard the other girl sigh.
“I dunno,” She felt the other girl’s palm slide up to her shoulder, rubbing small circles with her thumb. It soothed her a bit.
“He’s a smart kid, but he’s definitely not zombie-proof. That boy can barely lift his arms above his head.” Tori chuckled at that.
“That’s true,” The Latina replied.
“But I hope he’s okay out there.” She added after a moment. She let her friend rub her shoulder for a little longer before tapping her knee.
“Let’s keep moving.” With that, Jade jumped down from the counter, and they headed out.
They scavenged a few more areas and buildings they hadn’t hit yet, finding a few items here and there. All together, it was a pretty unsuccessful run. The girls found themselves within an abandoned loft that resided above an old grocery type of store. Tori watched as the other girl looked around, before setting up a temporary barricade towards the entry door. There wasn’t many zombies around this area, so it wasn’t a very big danger to worry about anything wandering up there. Tori tapped her ear piece.
“Wega to Captain.” The device crackled.
“Go for Mal.”
Tori glanced around her surroundings for a moment. The loft was a studio type of apartment. Big windows, natural light, beautiful counter tops, and cabinets that had already been half rifled through. As if whoever had been here, and left in a hurry grabbing what they could, but mostly leaving behind every thing. There wasn’t any blood, or liquids on the floor, except for a little bit of dirty water leaking from the fridge. She wouldn’t dare go near that. There was a large bed in one corner, an open kitchen with an island, and a small living area in the middle of the space. She watched as Jade began kicking a couch and recliner so that they kept the door firmly closed.
“We found a loft in a minimal zone, going to settle down and stay one more night.”
“Are you sure?” Tori began to place her pack down on the old granite, starting to rifle through some drawers.
“Yep. We will head back tomorrow in the afternoon. We are safe for now. Currently above the Quik Mart on 7th and Sunset, small apartment.” It was always best to give your location incase something happened.
“Copy. Stay safe.” And with that, her ear piece buzzed to quiet. Letting out a sigh, she found some cereal bars and cans of corn, which honestly sounded like a wonderful dinner. She put a bar in each hand, placing them behind her back.
She turned around to face her friend across the room.
“Which hand?” Jade rolled her eyes, continuing to secure the doors a bit more with some bigger pieces of furniture.
“You know I hate surprises, Vega.”
“Aw come on! Just choose one.”
“Fine”. Jade nodded to one side.
“That one.” Grinning widely, Tori tossed the bar over to Jade. Jade glanced at it in her palm.
“I want the other one.” Tori shook her head vigorously.
“No way, Jose.”
“I don’t like peanut butter.” She saw the pale girl make her way over to her, extending her hand out with the bar resting on top of it.
“What kind of person doesn’t like peanut butter?”
“Me. Now trade.” She shoved her palm with the snack closer to the brunette girl, raising her brows in expectancy. Tori glanced down at her own strawberry one, ultimately sighing before swapping the bars out. Jade gave her one of her signature smirks before tearing open her bar. But then Tori remembered something.
“You had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich the other day, didn’t you?”
“Yeah.”
“But you don’t like peanut butter.”
“Not today I don’t.”
“You’re so —“ A distant screech echoed from outside, halting her sentence. She stared at her friend momentarily, seeing her pause her bite mid chew. Tori jutted her head to the side quickly, Jade nodding in return.
They silently made their way over to one of the windows, peeling a blind back to take a look below them.
It was pretty dark out by now, some light coming down from the night sky but also a few street lamps still flickered to life occasionally.
A lonesome zombie stood in the middle of the cracked street, spazzing and twitching in many odd ways. Its clothing seemed torn and stained, its ankle being dragged behind it as it searched for food. It looked around, its arm coiled to its chest, twisting and winding its fingers in a broken sort of way.
It was an odd world to live in, to wonder who were you? This walking corpse was a person once, they had a family, dreams, feelings.
Dark liquid pooled at its mouth, dripping to its chin and down to its shirt. Another blood curdling scream came from it as it stumbled down the road.
“That zee is going to attract many, many more.” Jade whispered next to her. As if on cue, a few walkers appeared, following the sounds of the loud noise. She counted one, two, six, they just kept multiplying. Some of them freshly turned, some of them older and withering. A brief feeling of anxiety encased her stomach, her throat bobbing with a silent swallow.
“Should we try and… deal with it?” She whispered back. Side eyeing the other girl, she saw her set her jaw in thought. Turning back to the blinds, the screeching zombie continued to stagger along the street, yelling and calling out the others hiding in the shadows. They were watching a horde form right in front of their eyes.
She lost count after her mind hit twenty five walkers.
“It's attracting more,” Jade then abruptly let her fingers go of the blind she was looking through. Tori heard the way the other girl’s boots hit the floor.
“But it’s going east. It’ll pull them away, we’re fine.” She began to double check the door once more.
“Even if there were fifty out there,” Giving the makeshift barricade a once over, she walked over to the bed, kicking off her boots and plopping down on it.
“We would be fine, we’ve dealt with worse.” Continuing to look down upon the road, she agreed with Jade. The walker began to draw all of the others that were close or hiding among the area, out and to the right. With a sigh, she left the window. She made her way over to the bed as well, sitting down on the opposite side.
“Do you want to do watch duty tonight at all?” The Latina asked, beginning to unlace her converse. The other girl rustled a bit, adjusting her items to be close to her side of the bed.
“Nah,” She nodded towards the door.
“That shit’s way too overkill for the density in this area. We can just sleep.” Tori bit her lip, feeling her heart race for a moment. They would always sleep closely when they were at the compound, ever since the first day all of this crazy went down. They’ve just always felt the safest when they were close. Tori did her best not to read into that too much, it made her heart hurt and her mind whirl.
But sometimes when you were out on a run and needed to crash, it was better to have someone watch for a few hours while the other slept.
She trusted Jade’s direction on things like this though so she didn’t protest. And God, she was exhausted.
Shaking her head, she kept her items close, too. She lowered herself onto the unfamiliar bed, turning to her side. She felt it dip a bit, her shoulders wobbling a little as the other girl got comfy. Tori felt the familiar arm snake around her middle, doing its usual bunching of her shirt near her belly button. There were always some nervous feelings when they’d sleep this way, but it quickly turned into calm security.
Jade had always made her feel safe, even living in a world like this. That feeling was like a drug for Tori, besides the time spent in Jade’s arms, she hardly ever felt safe.
Feeling that familiar sigh of breath hit her neck, gently blowing some hairs forward and tickling her cheek, her mind began to settle down.
“Goodnight, Jade.”
“Night.”
…
“Tori!” The brunette gasped and sputtered as she struggled to push the attacker off of her. Dark, dirty nails gripped at her shoulders, tearing into her shirt as the boy tried to pull her closer. At this proximity, she could see the cloudy irises glaze over her, the person’s breath hitting her nose like rotten trash. Dark drool dripped from his mouth and purple veins blossomed all along his forehead. He barred his teeth at her as she closed her eyes.
“Please, stop!” She whimpered out. But the student completely ignored her, continuing his attempts to grab her.
With a grunt, she pushed him away as hard as she could, watching as he took pieces of her shirt with him as he fell to the ground.
Hurriedly, she looked around. Students and teachers ran in every direction, screaming and wailing as they all tried to find safety. To her right, a student was hunched over her English teacher Mr. Davis — digging his fingers into the man’s body, and scooping his flesh into his mouth. Tori’s eyes widened at the sight.
Her heart pounded against her chest, her ears were ringing, and she couldn’t breathe. That boy didn’t look, he didn’t look, what was he —
“Vega, for fuck’s sake!” A firm grip grabbed her wrist and she was dragged off across the campus.
…
Her eyes opened suddenly. Assessing her current sleeping situation, her heart picked up. Not so much at the gentle weight still around her, but at the door emitting a consistent thud, and the aftermath of her dream.
One bump, another bump, a pause. Silence.
Then one more bump.
“God, whoever’s knocking needs to fuck right off—” She felt her shirt bunch together more as a pale fist clenched against her shirt harder. Tori hushed her quickly, pointing towards the barricade. She felt the other girl stiffen as they both listened.
One thump, another, and another. Pause. A dry groan, and then another thump.
“He’s got more rhythm than you, Vega.”
Tori hushed her again, eyes wide.
And then the thuds stopped all together. There was a solid five minutes that passed before the small thumps turned into loud bangs. If he thought he wanted to get in before, now the zee needed to get in there no matter what. The girls jumped into action, quickly.
It wasn’t so much that they were afraid of the zee they could hear, but more so the noise it was making would attract many more.
In this new world, being quiet was important.
Once their shoes were on and their weapons were holstered up properly, they checked in on each other.
“We could get up to the roof,” Jade whispered, glancing around and then pointing towards the balcony. Her eyes then moved to the entrance.
“Or I move the furniture, throw out my back again, and you take him down when I let the door go.” Tori watched as the zee hit the door so hard, the pieces of living room furniture vibrated and scratched against the floor loudly. The dry groans turned into gurgled screeches, the banging on the door becoming sporadic and desperate.
“He’s too loud,” Tori bit her cheek, narrowing her eyes towards the balcony.
“For all we know, he could have a conga line of friends on the way up. We should head to the roof.” With that, they left the door barricaded, beginning to climb up the ladder that led to the roof of the building.
One step at a time, Tori’s ear piece suddenly crackled. It surprised her, her foot losing its balance below her on one of the pegs, she felt Jade gently grasp her ankle from below and place it back on the step.
“You good Vega?” She heard nothing but urgency and concern in the goth girl’s voice.
“I’m sorry! I slipped.” She said quickly, and with a huff hurried up the ladder. Once at the top, she helped Jade up the rest of the way, and then began tapping her ear piece a bit.
“What’s happening?” Jade asked. She sounded a bit winded, they didn’t do a lot of climbing focused training so the ladder was a bit much. Tori shielded her eyes from the sun, tilting her head while she adjusted her device.
“I think someone’s trying to get on our station we use, I don’t know.” Tori winced as the crackles swapped constantly between high pitched to general static. God, it was piercing her eardrums, she almost took it out and shoved it in her pocket out of frustration, but then there was a brief frequency of a voice. Pausing, she began to move around the graveled rooftop, seeing if the signal was better in some other areas up there.
Posing in an awkward position, Jade began to question her, but she hushed her for a third time that day.
“Shapiro to captains, or anyone at all for Christ sake, please somebody copy!” It was crackly, and still unclear, but holy chiz.
“It’s Robbie!” The other girl’s eyes went wide, a studded brow hoisting up in surprise.
“No shit, huh.” Jade said with a shake of her head, a small smile on her lips. She probably couldn’t believe it either.
“This is Tori, Robbie, I hear you!”
“Oh thank the gods! Tori, it’s so good to hear you.”
“I’m glad you’re okay Shapiro. Where are you, are you safe?” And it was hard not to talk too quickly, she never thought Robbie would still be alive after being gone for so long, and she didn’t know if the signal would drop.
The line crackled and muffled out a bit before he came back in.
“— bad connection. I’m on top of a building near the middle of the city I think,” She let it try and adjust, the line continuing to sound like a crinkled bag of chips, and when the nerdy boy was able to come through, he sounded like he was under water.
“— on the fence. My shin is really bad. There’s an escape ladder below. I’ll play some —“ And then Tori lost her balance. Her foot fell a certain way, her arms dropped, and she completely lost signal.
“No,” She tried to replicate the pose, but it was no use. She hurried over to the other girl, grasping her arm and raising it high, and then holding on to her other hand as if this would extend the signal.
“No, no, no!” She dropped the pale girl’s hand exasperated, falling down to the ground with a pained sigh.
“Did you just try to use me as a cell tower?”
“No, more like an antenna extender, but you were terrible at it.”
“You found my one imperfection.” The other girl sat down beside her, brushing her knees off a bit before settling.
“So the dork lives.”
“Yeah.” Tori began to try and scan the other rooftops across the way and to their sides. But her eyes weren’t able to pick up much.
“I think he said he’s on top of a roof in the middle of the city. And then something about his shin?”
“The hell is he trying to tell you about his shin?”
“I don’t know! He’s weird.”
“Yeah.”
There was a brief moment where the two just digested everything. Jade began to play with the gravel between her fingers.
“Do you think he was up that fire escape we saw yesterday?” The raven haired girl asked.
“The one with all the zees?”
“Yeah.” Tori sat up a bit straighter, remembering the fencing and the small horde trying to get to whatever had fled up there. She nodded slowly.
“I actually think that’s exactly where he is.”
…
“Oh my God.” The two stood within the same alley they started in, looking ahead to see if the horde was still at the ladder. There must’ve been at least forty zees around it now.
“What the actual fuck.” Jade uttered under her breath. Tori strained her ears, a very distant tune could be heard. It almost sounded like…
“Forever Baby? Do you hear that?” The brunette asked, furrowing her brows. Jade sighed.
“It’s like he wants the walkers to know he’s up there.” Tori squeezed the bridge of her nose, trying to fight the impending migraine.
“I think he was trying to let us know where he was or something.”
“Yeah well, clearly he’s let more than just us know.” Tori began to survey the area a bit more. There weren't any zees nearby besides the ones trying to get to Robbie, so she wasn’t too worried.
“How are we going to get up there without going through them?” She asked her pale companion. Finishing her own survey, she watched as the other girl conducted hers. Jade shook her head.
“I don’t know,” She began to scan the buildings a bit more.
“We should get to the other side, see if there’s another way up.” Tori nodded.
The two maneuvered between alleyways and streets that were lined with cars, asphalt sprouted and cracked deeply beneath their feet. It was easy to trip over if you weren’t careful.
They eventually found the other side of the building, which happened to be the front of it. It looked to be a semi-tall commercial building, probably with a bunch of cubicles and paperwork inside. They quietly assessed it.
Looking around, Tori started from the front. There could be a way in directly, and then a route to the roof from the inside. But this also has the risk of wandering into a mess they may not be prepared for — who knows how many office worker zees would be in there. The front doors seemed to be boarded up pretty good too, although they could pry a portion of the door open, or find a window with a weak spot. She filed that to the back of her head.
Glancing around some more, there was a truck that was crushed into the corner of the building, but above it seemed to be a potential way into the second floor. But again, there would be the risk of what was wandering the second floor.
She bit her lip in thought.
They could also attempt to lure the zees away from the fire escape somehow. But they would need Robbie to stop blasting the horrible eighties pop song. If they went this route, they’d have to catch signal again somehow and then also deal with like fifty zees.
“What are you thinking?” She tilted her head up, staring amongst the brick walls around them before tapping her ear piece.
“Robbie, can you hear me?” It was a shot in the dark but she assumed because she was closer to him now that maybe the signal would be better. She heard a few crackles before a muffled voice came through on the frequency.
“Yes! I can hear you!” Tori let out a breath of relief. This would make it so much easier.
“Okay listen Robbie,” She began to look around a bit more, multitasking her conversation whilst also trying to find a way to lure the horde of walkers away from the area.
“I need you to cut the music,” She began to stretch out her arms and legs, a good habit she developed when it came to going out on runs. She had a feeling they were going to be exerting a lot of energy for this rescue mission.
“No problem.” As soon as she heard his reply, the song had halted. She breathed deeply once more.
“We’re gonna try and lure the zees away from the ladder,” Icy blues snapped to her own eyes, as if they were asking her a nonverbal question, but Tori ignored it for now.
“Then we’re coming up.”
“Copy! Let me know if I can help at all.” She tapped her ear piece once more before scanning the area again.
“You gonna fill me in on what we’re doing, or?” There were a few cars piled a bit down the road, they could maybe rig one’s alarm to go off.
“Earth to Vega? Talk to me?” Blinking a few times, she uttered a small apology before acknowledging her partner. Sometimes she could get so lost in her thoughts.
“We need a distraction loud enough for those zees by the ladder.” She watched as Jade did the same thing, let her eyes wander up and down the roads before landing back on the Latina.
“You think Robbie could rig the song to play on some random speaker?”
“Like on a car radio?”
“Car radio, a shop’s speakers, whatever.” Tori bit her lip in thought. If he could force himself into their station, and physically create these remote earpieces, he surely could hack into some other device. She tapped her piece once more.
“Rob, there’s one thing you might be able to help us with.”
///
“You think this is gonna work?”
“I have no faith.” The two found themselves behind a broken down van, peeking around the sides at the zombies that remained by the ladder. Since he had stopped the song from the top of the building, a few zees wandered away, but that still left a solid thirty or so. She began to worry at her cuticles, waiting for Robbie to initiate the distraction.
“Move your body right next to mine —“ She snapped her head across the avenue, the distant tune seeming to come from some place down the way. She held her breath as she watched, slowly the zombies were much more interested in the festering dance party down the way. They groaned as they walked, more and more piling towards the sound of the song. She smiled as the plan was working, her heart hammering against her chest. All of the zombies had wandered away, leaving the fire escape ladder completely open.
They finally found themselves atop another rooftop, panting and out of breath, sprawling out on the top once they’re there. Wiping her forehead, Tori glanced across the way to see a grime covered Robbie, his shirt partially ripped and his leg wrapped in what seems to be the other part of his shirt. Dark crimson soaks into the makeshift bandage, Tori’s mind going to shit immediately.
What if he was bitten?
“I am so glad to see you two.” He said, adjusting himself against an air conditioning unit. She sees Jade nod towards his leg, still trying to catch her breath.
“Bite?” Robbie shook his head, pushing his glasses up his nose.
“Nope. Just got stuck on the fence out front, hurt myself pretty bad though.” The two girls nodded, resting for a second before making their way over to him.
Looking around, Tori could see the roof was turned into a small shelter before they got there. Most likely not by Robbie, but by some previous survivors as the items left behind were tattered and don’t provide the nerdy boy any use on his own.
Lawn chairs and broken cots, empty cans and torn backpacks lay around, Robbie on top of a blanket leaning against a metal unit. Next to him lay a modified type of radio she assumes he had used to contact them. Tori kneeled down by his side, looking him over. She hovered her hand above the wound.
“May I?” He nodded before grimacing, bracing himself. With a breath, she squeezed some hand sanitizer on her hands from her pack, swinging it around herself before gently peeling the bandage away from Robbie’s leg. He let out a few small whines as she did so, beginning to eye the wound.
It definitely wasn’t a bite, but it also wasn’t something they could really fix up here. The medical people back at camp would most likely suture him up and disinfect the large gash, but it seems he’s mostly stopped the bleeding.
“That fence got you pretty good.” She heard from behind, turning around she saw Jade eyeing the boy curiously. Tori nodded in agreement.
“I can clean it and do some basic first aid but we’re definitely gonna want to get you back to base.” Tori stated, beginning to pull out a small bottle of whiskey from her pack. She watched as Robbie quickly shook his head.
“No, please don’t. I’m good!” Tori bit her lip, switching her gaze to the goth girl. As if she read her mind, Jade stuck her palm out, and Tori placed the two ounce bottle in her hand. She quickly unlooped her belt before shoving it into the boy’s mouth.
“I can’t do this part so Jade’s gonna do it for me. I’m gonna turn around and cover my ears.” She watched as his eyes widened, scooching himself even more into the air conditioning unit. The last thing she saw was Jade’s small smile before she stood up and turned around, covering her ears.
What a freak.
A few minutes pass by before she’s tapped on the shoulder.
“He passed out before I even got a drop on him,” She dropped the empty plastic bottle before looking at her nails and beginning to pick at them.
“You can do what you need to now, though.” Tori exhaled before getting to work.
