Pain
“I can’t believe I’m leaving right when my Dad became the Hokage!”
Obito smiled as he looked down at Naruto. The worst wounds from his battle with Sasuke had already healed, and his smile had returned. But Obito knew underneath the surface, Naruto was still deeply troubled by Sasuke’s departure. Obito was troubled too.
“Even if I’m the Hokage now, that doesn’t mean that you can ease up on your training Naruto. I won’t always be around to protect you, so it’s important that you get stronger.”
“Yeah yeah, I know. Itachi and the others are after me. But still! I can’t believe it! My Dad’s the Hokage!” Naruto shouted as he hugged Obito again.
Obito resolutely ignored the pinched look on Jiraiya’s face. He knew the sannin had not been all too pleased to find out that Naruto had been raised as Obito’s son, and knew nothing about Minato.
“I have to get stronger so I can bring Sasuke back! And I have to protect my old man.” Naruto shouted again as he held out a thumbs up. “Now that you’re the Hokage Dad, you’re gonna have people coming after you too! But I’ll be right there to teach them a lesson! Because I’m Naruto Uzumaki, son of the Fifth Hokage!”
Jiraiya looked like he was going to be sick. “Alright alright Naruto. Just because your Dad’s the Hokage now doesn’t mean you’re any closer to becoming one yourself. Unlike the other villages, our system isn’t hereditary.” Jiraiya reminded. “Besides, you have to get strong enough to protect yourself, before you can even think about protecting your Dad.”
Naruto rolled his eyes. “Alright Pervy Sage, I get it. I have a lot of hard work.” He turned to Obito and smiled again. “I’m going to miss you a lot Dad! Don’t forget about me now that you’re gonna be a busy Hokage!”
“I could never forget about you.” Obito swept Naruto into his arms. He looked at Jiraiya over Naruto’s shoulder. “Keep him safe.”
“You have nothing to worry about.” Jiraiya’s face no longer looked like he’d been sucking on a lemon. He and Naruto both said their goodbyes to Naruto’s other friends, and Tsunade, who had agreed to return to the village. Only as a member of the council only, she had been clear that she wasn’t ready for more responsibilities.
Obito wondered how Naruto had managed to win the jaded woman over, but he figured there were some secrets he could let his son keep. What mattered, is that now Obito had a friendly face on the council. Even though the Senju and the Uchiha had been enemies for years, Tsunade had managed to put that past behind her for Naruto’s sake. And of course, it helped that Obito had been steadily paying her debts off.
“Bye Granny Tsunade! Take care of everything here because I know my Dad is gonna mess something up!” Naruto cried out. After one last hug shared with Obito, Naruto and Jiraiya headed out.
The two of them had a little over two years before the Akatsuki would show up to ruin things. Hopefully Jiraiya could whip Naruto into shape in the time left.
“What’s with the long face brat?” Tsunade asked as she punched Obito in the shoulder. “Your kid’s gonna be back in no time, and he’s gonna kick your ass.”
Obito tried not to show how much Tsunade’s punch hurt, she was strong. “I know Jiraiya taught Minato-sensei, but I hope he’s not expecting Naruto to be that kind of student.”
Tsunade smiled. “Jiraiya has taught students like Naruto. Besides, you have a full village of brats to deal with now.”
The two of them walked together back into town.
“My Grandfather’s dream was for the Senju and Uchiha to work together in this village. It’s a little sad that we’re the last ones left.” Tsunade said.
“I’m sure with the two of us working together, we can keep this village together and forge a better path.” Obito smiled and rolled up his left sleeve, his right sleeve always stayed down. “Thank you for coming back to the village Tsunade. You’re the kind of person I want on my council.”
“Hmm? Why’s that?”
“Because you’re the reason the squads now have medics on them. If it weren’t for you, we would’ve lost a lot more lives during all these wars. You care about others. And that’s the kind of shinobi I am, and the kind of shinobi I raised Naruto to be.”
“You’re a lot like my Grandfather. So is Naruto now that you mention it.” Tsunade’s brow furrowed. “Speaking of Naruto, does he know who his real parents are?”
“No.”
“Why haven’t you told him?”
Obito sighed and looked down. “I planned to tell him when he graduated from the academy. But after the Uchiha massacre, I couldn’t bring myself to tell him. Naruto has had a bad relationship with killing. If it weren’t for the fact that he has a huge amount of chakra and the Nine Tails, I probably wouldn’t have allowed him to be a ninja with his reluctance to kill. But he’s found a way to be a shinobi while minimizing the death he causes.” Obito looked up to Minato’s stone face. “I wasn’t sure how he would take the news that his father was chosen to be Hokage because he was a killing machine.”
“I think you’re underestimating him. But then again, you’re his father, not me. I just think you could trust him with that information.”
“I have a feeling that when the time is right, Naruto will know. Until then I just hope that he can forgive me for not telling him.”
“He’s one of the most forgiving people I’ve met so I’m sure you have nothing to worry about.”
Obito grinned. “You’re right. But until then, there’s nothing I can do. For now I’m going to be the best Hokage I can be.”
~ A few more years later ~
Kakashi was finally going to have his revenge. After all this time. His heart was racing at the thought of finally facing a certain foe.
Even though Orochimaru had betrayed their organization and attacked the Leaf Village, at least he had done this for them.
Of course Obito had to ruin Kakashi’s plans.
Kakashi and Deidara arrived at the lake to find the Three Tails fighting several squads of Leaf shinobi. It looked like they had tried to seal it and failed. And now it was on a rampage.
And yep. Among the Leaf was the obnoxious orange jumpsuit the Nine Tails jinchuriki wore. It was going to be difficult to exact his revenge with Obito’s moronic brat sticking his nose in their business. Naruto and Obito along with some other shinobi had already reduced the Akatsuki numbers quite a bit. But Kakashi had a hard time being mad when he found out that Obito had used the Chidori to kill two of Kakuzu’s hearts. Something in him sang when it found out his former teammate had taken to using his signature move.
But for now Naruto and the other Leaf shinobi were in the way.
“What should we do?” Deidara asked as he crossed his arms. “I didn’t bring enough blasting clay to take them all out.”
“Let’s observe for now. It looks like they already tried to seal it once and failed. They’re probably going to retreat. And then this thing is ours.” Kakashi cracked his knuckles. Kakashi made it a point not to let revenge consume him, but this wasn’t a human. It was a tailed beast, and Kakashi had to capture it to extract its chakra. So what if he got a little rough with a giant turtle anyway?
The Three Tails slapped one of its tails down on the water’s surface, sending waves and Leaf shinobi flying. Several of Naruto’s shadow clones vanished. From the looks of things, only Naruto was strong enough to take the Three Tails on, and the other shinobi were already exhausted. A retreat was imminent, and then Kakashi would be taking the three tails down a peg.
And, just to make Kakashi’s day even more difficult, the air next to the original Naruto began to swirl, and Obito appeared with a giant fan on his back. Kakashi hadn’t seen Obito in his Hokage mission wear, and it was not disappointing. Obito had chosen traditional Uchiha robes that had fallen out of style in recent generations but had been worn by the clan during the warring state’s period. It was quite fetching. He had the Uchiha crest on his back, at the base of his neck and the kanji for the fifth Hokage below it.
“Sorry I’m late Naruto. I ran into some traffic on my way here.”
“You’re right on time Dad!” Naruto cheered.
Obito appraised the situation with his sharingan activated. He took a slug off his shoulder and threw it to Shizune. “Sealing team, fall back and let Lady Katsuyu heal you and replenish your chakra. And make sure you thank Lady Tsunade when we get back to the village. Other team, fall back and guard the sealing team.” Obito seemed to have grown quite a bit as a leader. How interesting. “Naruto, we can’t do anything until the sealing team is recovered. So, we have to hold this thing off until they can try sealing again. Once they’re ready to go, I can subdue it with my sharingan while it is sealed away.”
“Alright!” Naruto’s grin was so wide that Kakashi could see it from here.
“This is bad, hn.” Deidara huffed. “With the Hokage here we have no chance to get our hands on that thing. I suppose the same orders apply now as before?”
“Yes. You are not to touch him.”
“How troublesome.”
Kakashi’s heart clenched as he watched Obito and Naruto fight side by side. Again and again, they battered it with rasengans and fireballs. It was a sight to see. But, at one point Obito must have gotten too close because the beast let out a frightening roar and started gathering red and blue chakra in its mouth.
Oh no. Kakashi recognized what was happening. It was forming a tailed beast bomb. While it couldn’t let out a barrage like the Eight Tails, Kakashi knew that it was just as destructive. All of the Leaf shinobi were as good as dead…
“Kashi that things going to kill the Nine Tails. Won’t that affect our mission?” Deidara asked with a raised brow.
“As long as neither side has the Nine Tails, we can still accomplish our goal.” Kakashi murmured. But at the same moment, he pushed all of his chakra into his left eye. He would have to blow it away with kamui to save Obito.
“Dad what’s happening?!”
“It saw my sharingan, and got really mad! I guess it doesn’t like Uchiha.” Obito had the gall to laugh at a moment like this when his son was about to die. “Get behind me Naruto, I don’t want the blast to accidentally hit you!”
The… what? Kakashi looked up, even as his left eye refused to whirl into the mangekyo on such short notice. Obito was running towards the forming tailed beast bomb, the giant fan now in his right hand. What was the moron going to do? Try to deflect it?
Pain exploded in Kakashi’s left eye as it rejected his chakra, forcing him to collapse. With his right eye he watched as the Three Tails launched the tailed beast bomb, and Obito… brought his fan down on the bomb and it just… disappeared.
The stillness was so jarring. Kakashi had seen enough of these to know their destructive power, there was no way that the fan had managed to destroy it.
“Uchiha reflection!” The bomb exploded from the surface of the fan, only it hit the Three Tails and not Obito and the Leaf shinobi. Kakashi’s right eye widened. There was no way.
“Wow Dad! That was so cool!”
The Three Tails was blackened and smoking, but still looked like it was ready to fight.
“I’m glad I stole this from your crazy Uncle Madara!” Obito said with a laugh.
“Can I use it next?”
“Sorry Naruto, only blood Uchihas can use the Uchiha reflection.” Obito reached out to ruffle Naruto’s hair. “But how about a combo attack? I’ll use a fire style attack and you use wind.”
“Oh yeah!” Obito passed the giant fan over.
The two of them moved perfectly in sync and released attacks at the exact same moment.
“Majestic destroyer flame!”
“Gunbai fanned wind!”
The already strong fire attack was magnified to the point where even Kakashi and Deidara felt the heat. The Three Tails let out a horrible scream, curled up and retreated under the water.
“Lord Obito, we’re ready!” Shizune called.
“Wonderful! Let me send Lady Katsuyu back.” Obito quickly sent each slug into the kamui dimension. “When it resurfaces, I’ll subdue it while your team seals it. Naruto, if it breaks free of my control you need to hit it with everything you’ve got. I want your largest rasengan barrage.”
“You got it Dad!”
“Everyone who isn’t Naruto or the sealing team, keep any enemy combatants away from the sealing team! Don’t worry about me, I can handle any of Orochimaru’s thugs. Let’s seal this thing away!”
“Alright let’s go!” The other shinobi cheered.
Kakashi watched in a painful daze as Obito’s team expertly sealed the Three Tails away. Naruto didn’t have to unleash a rasengan barrage, because Obito’s sharingan was strong enough to hold the beast still.
“Well. There goes the Three Tails.” Deidara pouted. “What are we going to tell Pein?”
“There was simply no opportunity to get it. It’s like the Nine Tails, as long as there isn’t a country that has a tailed beast, our plan can continue. The beast’s chakra isn’t necessary for our plan. We just have to make sure either we have the power, or that nobody has it. Let’s head back, we’ll figure out our next strategy.”
Pein might consider himself the leader because he could use the jutsu to extract the tailed beast chakra and control the body of the ten tails, but Kakashi was still the true leader and his word was absolute.
~~
Once Kakashi made it back to his hideout he made a beeline for his painkillers. His ninken knew to stay out of his way when his headaches were this bad, and thankfully didn’t jump on him once he returned. But that didn’t mean that Pakkun wouldn’t scold him.
“You’ve had that sharingan for close to twenty years now. You should know how to use it without hurting yourself.”
Kakashi ignored the little dog, choosing instead to close his eyes and hold a cold compress to his head. He hadn’t had to rely too heavily on the mangekyo over the years, but even with his sparing use it still brought headaches and the vision in his left eye was diminishing. He figured it was because he wasn’t a blood Uchiha, but still the fact that Obito managed to use his kamui so much without fatigue was truly commendable.
Even now, all these years later, Kakashi couldn’t bring himself to hurt Obito. It was a real hindrance. Because Kakashi was going to have to capture Obito’s brat and extract the Nine Tails, reasonably soon. And knowing Obito, he wouldn’t just let his son get taken by a ninja terrorist group. They were going to meet face to face, very soon.
It wasn’t the first time, but Kakashi wondered again, if he was doing the right thing. All those years ago, still hurting from losing Obito, Rin and Sensei, he had been too distraught to remain a Leaf shinobi. He lost his resolve to continue serving leadership that could so willingly sacrifice children. But things weren’t the same. Especially with Obito in charge.
Previous Hokages might have thrown Naruto at the Three Tails and expected him to handle the situation, as the Leaf’s jinchuriki. But Obito had fought alongside the child, even though at Obito’s skill level he really hadn’t needed Naruto’s help. But one thing was clear, Obito wouldn’t have left the kid to handle the situation on his own.
“You failed.”
Kakashi opened his eyes and met the ringed eyes of Pein. He wondered when the man had arrived. It wasn’t normal for his stoic subordinate to seek him out. It was equally strange to have the man upset about the lack of the three tails. Acquiring each tailed beast was certainly part of the plan, but they were not hindered if they lacked any, they just had to be certain that no one else could harness the beast’s power.
“It’s not a failure if the Three Tails is sealed away. Now no one can harness its power. Once we have the other tailed beasts, we can still continue with our plan.” Kakashi reminded his subordinate.
“I know that the Hokage was on the scene.”
Kakashi frowned. “What of it?”
“For some reason you are weak when he is around. I don’t know why, but it’s a liability which I cannot allow. It has already cost us the Three Tails. It nearly cost us the One Tail. Is it also going to cost us the Nine Tails?”
“It will not. Capturing the Nine Tails is my mission, and I will not fail. The Hokage has nothing to do with it. In fact, the only reason we couldn’t get to the Three Tails was because we were outnumbered. I’m strong, but I couldn’t take on that many leaf shinobi without a plan in place.”
Pein raised his hand and before Kakashi could catch, his outer mask shot across the room, landing in Pein’s outstretched hand.
“Unlike the rest of the Akatsuki, I know who you are. Kakashi Hatake. While I am grateful for your guidance, especially after Yahiko’s death, do not assume that I will allow you to derail our organization’s mission because of your feelings for your former teammate. If you continue to remain weak because of your feelings for Obito, I will be forced to take decisive action. And you will not like that outcome. You had better be ready to show me your true dedication.”
“I am the leader of this organization. I’m more dedicated than you. I’ve lost everything to war, and I plan on stopping it entirely and changing the shinobi world. Not having one tailed beast will not change the outcome of our mission. Listen well Pein, if you take any action against the Hokage, you will be labelled a traitor to our organization. And you know what happens to traitors.”
“Even now, you’re more concerned about the Hokage instead of the very real threat in front of you. No matter. I intend to complete our mission. I just wanted to be sure of your resolve Kakashi.” He turned toward the door. “I shall continue on my mission to retrieve the Six Tails.”
“Good.” Kakashi closed his eyes and put the cold compress back on his forehead. He would have to keep an eye on Pein.

“You sent Pervy Sage to take on the leader of the Akatsuki, ALONE?” Naruto screamed at his father. “I can’t believe you! What about your mantra about never abandoning your comrades?! You abandoned him! How could you!?”
“Naruto, Jiraiya asked to go on the mission. I did not force him. But unfortunately, due to the circumstances, he had to go in alone. There isn’t anyone I could send who wouldn’t have blown his cover immediately.” Obito tried to reason.
“No! You failed him! You failed as a Hokage!” Tears ran down Naruto’s cheeks. “You sent him off to his death because you didn’t care about him!”
“Naruto! He went alone, to get intel, to protect you!” Obito held his hands out in front of him. “Not abandoning your comrades is one thing, but you have to let shinobi protect their student’s! All Jiraiya wanted was to protect you. He decided to do this himself, and I had to respect his decision. Even though I’m the Hokage, Jiraiya is still my superior.”
“I didn’t ask him to protect me! You should never have become Hokage! No Hokage would ever send one of his shinobi to his death!” Naruto wiped his tears. “I hate you!”
And with that, Naruto left the Hokage’s office.
“Obito-boy, he didn’t mean it.” Lord Fukusaku placed one of his slimy hands on top of Obito’s. “Naruto boy was just upset. All of us can tell how much that boy loves you, and right now he’s just grieving his master.” However, when the frog looked into the Hokage’s eyes, they were rimmed with tears, and red with the slowly spinning mangekyo pattern. So, the rumors about the Uchiha were true, in moments of trauma and turmoil the sharingan would reflexively activate. It seemed their subconscious struggled to differentiate between physical and emotional pain. How troublesome.
“Thank you, Lord Fukusaku. You don’t know how much your words mean to me. But for now, let’s talk about our plan.” Obito’s sharingan slowly spun until his eyes were black again.
“With your permission, I want to take Naruto to Mount Myoboku. He needs to get stronger before this Pein fellow comes after him.”
Obito nodded. “I’ve taught him everything I can. What is it that you can teach him?”
Lord Fukusaku’s smile brightened up the Hokage office. “I’m going to teach him sage jutsu. And we need to leave soon. Naruto’s birth father was never any good with sage jutsu, so we’ll need as much time as we can to train him.”
Obito sighed. “You’re right. Once Naruto has had some time to cool down, you have my permission to take him to Mount Myoboku. He will probably be safer there anyway.”
“Do you want me to bring him to you before we leave?”
“No, that’s not necessary. I think I’m the last person he wants to see right now. It’s best that he get to work and doesn’t see me.”
“Are you sure? Obito-boy…”
Obito turned and gave the toad a half-hearted smile. “I know Naruto better than anyone! He needs to focus on his training, not get angry with his old man again.”
“Very well.” Lord Fukusaku disappeared in a cloud of smoke.
The other shinobi shuffled out of the room. Leaving Obito alone with Tsunade. She made her way to stand next to Obito. When Obito didn’t say anything she reached out and laid a hand on his shoulder.
“It’s not your fault.”
Obito closed his eyes. “As his Hokage, it is.”
Tsunade shook her head. “He accepted the mission knowing the parameters. Jiraiya might have made everyone think he’s just a fool, but he wasn’t. He knew what he was doing and he accepted the risk. He chose to give his life in order to save Naruto and the village.”
“Thank you Tsunade.” Obito’s face didn’t change.
She stood up and walked around the desk. When her back was to him she simply said “You are a good man, a good father and a good Hokage.” And left the room.
However, despite her kind words, Obito felt the hole in his heart grow bigger. His mind pictured Rin, Kakashi, Minato, Kushina, Lord Third, and Jiraiya. And now, even Naruto. Even though he hadn’t died, Obito was no fool. Naruto didn’t want Obito as his father anymore. Obito had failed so many. Would Naruto ever forgive him?
With Obito’s sensing abilities, he could sense the moment hours later when Lord Fukusaku and Naruto left the village for Mount Myoboku. As expected, Naruto chose not to say goodbye to his father.
~~
Jiraiya’s killer arrived within a week. No one had any clue how they had gotten through the complex barrier system, but as Obito looked out the windows in the Hokage office his heart sank. Smoke rose from the horizon screams filled the air and he could see shinobi bouncing from rooftop to rooftop.
The village was under siege.
“Lord Fifth, there appear to be several intruders wearing Akatsuki cloaks, intel is reporting that they have infiltrated us in several spots.”
“They’ve attacked the market!”
“They attacked the residential area!”
Obito reached up and removed his white and red Hokage robe. Revealing his battle gear. “Tell Lady Tsunade that I’m sorry to interrupt her morning plans, but we need her leadership in the medical corps.” Obito just managed to keep his voice even. “As the Fifth Hokage I will personally deal with the threat. Hopefully I can stop them. But if I cannot, you must evacuate as many as you can. I can buy us time.”
“Lord Fifth! You can’t!”
“I am the leader of the Hidden Leaf village. I will not sit idly while my citizens are killed.” Obito straightened his back as he reached up to the window. “I will never abandon my comrades.” With that he phased through the window and wall and headed into the action.
Based on the intel Jiraiya gathered, this particular enemy had the rinnegan and six different bodies that he controlled. How troublesome. Obito had already taken out a few of the Akatsuki, he remembered using Kakashi’s old trick to slice through that bastard Kakuzu. But this guy was completely different. Even with the most powerful set of living sharingan, Obito would have to be careful.
He landed on a rooftop and watched as one of the Pein’s shot projectiles of some sort at his citizens. He quickly sent them into the kamui dimension, where it would cause no harm. The Pein turned and saw him. Good. He had been noticed.
“Obito Uchiha.” Obito turned and another Pein had appeared. Jiraiya hadn’t been able to tell what this one’s powers were. The Pein raised his hand in Obito’s direction, and suddenly Obito’s body was pulled by an explicable force towards the man.
Obito retreated into the kamui dimension. He leapt out from behind the Pein, slicing through with the copied Chidori. However, this time one of the other one’s intercepted Obito’s attack. Taking it and falling to the ground.
The Pein Obito had been targeting didn’t change his expression at all. “Your reputation precedes you.” He looked like someone who was just trying to have a conversation and Obito was the asshole, instead of it clearly being the other way around.
“I’ve wanted to meet you.”
“What the hell could you want with me?” Obito scowled but was thankful for any time that the Pein’s wouldn’t be attacking the village. As of now, the six around him were still. Watching. Having this many rinnegans fixed on him was unnerving.
“You are like me. A child of war. We both grew up with no family because of the older generation’s blood lust. We were both nothing more than tools to fight someone else’s battle. I think out of everyone in this village, you and I can come to an understanding.”
“An understanding?! You’ve come to my home! Hurt my citizens! You’re hunting my son! And you think we can come to some kind of casual understanding?! If you wanted to talk, you could have done that without all this collateral!”
“Humans can only understand each other when we know pain.” The bastard’s face was still as expressionless as ever. “You and I both have visual powers gifted from the gods. The Akatsuki’s current leader plans to kill you and take your eyes for himself. Unlike him, I have no reason to harm you. What use would I have of your abilities when mine are far greater.”
“This isn’t some kind of pissing contest!” Obito clenched his fist.
“Surely you understand just as I do, the pain that follows from having visual prowess.” The Pein turned his head and looked at Obito inquisitively. “You and I are not so different. I had hoped that we could agree on finding peace together. It’s something you’ve strived for just as I have.”
Obito’s anger dissipated. “Peace? Who the hell are you to talk about peace!”
“My family was killed by leaf shinobi during the third great shinobi war.” The Pein revealed. “The same village which you are now fighting to protect has been senselessly killing people for decades. Yet you lecture me about peace. It’s still killing, even if it’s accidental. Even if it’s to protect someone you love. How many have you killed, Obito Uchiha? All to protect a village and a way of life which breeds nothing more than strife and hatred.”
Obito looked at the destruction around them. “How is this fixing anything? You’re the one who is breeding more hatred.”
“Surely someone with the mangekyo sharingan understands that sacrifice is often necessary for the greater good.”
Obito swore his heart stopped. How did this bastard know how most Uchiha unlocked the mangekyo sharingan? Unfortunately for him, Obito’s hadn’t been awakened because he slew a comrade. He looked down and took a deep breath.
“Listen. If you’re really after peace, then stop the fighting. Surely there is another way to reach a solution that doesn’t involve senseless violence. Neither of us are the same children who were sent off to fight someone else’s war. We can forge a new path and stop the hatred. But first, you must cease your attack and your pursuit of my son.”
“I was hoping that you would see reason. Obito Uchiha. Because you, unlike the other Kage, are also a victim of war. But you’re nothing but a wretched Leaf Shinobi content to maintain the status quo. A pity, I had thought that if we worked together we could achieve peace together. Especially you, who has raised a jinchuriki as your own. I thought you would want to create a world where a child doesn’t have to become a weapon.”
Obito’s face hardened. “If I have to sacrifice Naruto to create that world, then it’s not worth it. I’m not willing to abandon anyone in order to create peace.”
“Useless.”
With that, the Peins all moved into action. Jiraiya’s intel was true, they were visually linked. But Obito still had the upper hand with the kamui. Even with the same power as the Sage of Six Paths, your attack needed to hit something in order to be effective.
Just when it seemed that Obito had the upper hand, the little Pein that could summon monsters summoned a huge two headed dog that went on a rampage. And of course, it ran right toward a civilian family. Obito wasted no time sending it to the kamui dimension where it could rampage all it wanted.
Pain exploded in Obito’s chest. It was so shocking, nothing had hurt this much since the boulders. Obito looked down at his chest and saw a fist sticking out of his chest cavity. His rib cage had been blown out, along with his heart. In fact with the sharingan he could clearly make out the pieces of his heart that had been shredded when the attack landed.
It was the big Pein, the one that could absorb ninjutsu and chakra. And sure enough Obito could feel it siphoning off his chakra.
A moment later five of the chakra rods pierced his body, all in vital locations.
Obito looked at his chest one last time, and noted that at least on the bright side, the sealing tag Madara had left on his heart nearly twenty years ago had been punched out of Obito’s body.
Steam began to rise from each wound. His body’s attempt to save itself, but without a heart to beat blood not even the healing abilities of the First Hokage could save Obito. Somehow, these bastards had figured out that Obito became solid when he sucked things into the kamui dimension. But no one else had figured it out thus far, so how could these clowns?
Obito turned his face up to the main Pein.
“Do you know pain now, Obito Uchiha?”
God, what a bastard. Had this guy seen Obito’s face? Had he heard anything about the Uchiha clan? Or what about the fact that this guy’s one goal was to kill Obito’s beloved child?
Obito coughed out a glob of blood and turned his eyes away from the rinnegan, choosing instead to look at the Hokage mountain. His own scarred visage greeted him. He wondered how the village would remember him.
He looked at Minato sensei’s stone face next. It really didn’t look anything like him…
Then he looked up at the sky. Obito guessed it was a fitting way to go. After all, he had been allowed to cheat death once before, all those years ago. It figured that death had finally caught up to him.
I’m finally joining you, Rin. Kakashi.
