What Lurks in the Dark

Summary
He waits for his love to return in the darkness, with only the moon to provide a glow of light. The trees are tall, leaning over, casting dark and deep shadows over the only path that exists where his love should be returning. Fear begins to creep into his soul when the night lingers on and his love still hasn't returned. A familiar sound rises from the darkness, his excitement is heightened at his loves return, but turns to ice cold fear when he is faced with impending death instead. In celebration of SNS Month and Halloween, here is a one shot of my favorite boys :D
Note
Happy SNS month to all those fellow fans! Here is a one shot that I came up with on a whim because my dear friend was the muse in this short horror story that stars my most favorite guys! It just happened, I don't know how, but damn, did I have fun in the 90 minutes that it took. Please excuse any mistakes that there may be, my fingers were going wild and I wanted to have it up to share as soon as possible!

A lone figure sat on a covered wooden porch of a small wood cabin, the half moon was bright when the clouds drifted out of its path, placing its moonbeams on the mossy cabin roof. The dew nestled within the moss would glisten in the moonlight from time to time.

The yips of coyotes were heard in the distance, their cries of excitement echoing over the tall timber trees together with a sound of the creaking wood that came from the rocking chair that the shadowed figure was settled in. Now and then a few raindrops would sprinkle from the darkened sky, a heavy cloud would pass over briefly, letting loose its few heavy drops before moving along.

A soft glowing red light appeared before the form that sat in the rocking chair, and a deep inhale was heard before puffs of white smoke appeared. The smell of musky soot filled the air and the soft glowing ash would disappear until the form puffed on it again.

The form stared at the rutted road that left the front of the cabin and disappeared into the thick trees. The moon beams highlighted the small puddles and dew drops along the road and those eyes would watch intently.

Another soft red glow created enough light to reflect off deep crystal blue orbs that watched the dark dirt road and the trees that lined it. The red glow disappeared and puffs of white smoke were expelled from the man’s lips with a soft sound of a hiss.

The man was waiting. His partner, his friend, his everything, should have been back by now. It wasn’t a long trek to the village to retrieve what was needed, but something stirred in the man’s gut, something uncertain. He had warned him that it would get dark soon, it could wait until morning, but his love was a stubborn mule and insisted he would be back immediately.

The wooden rocker creaked loudly as the man stood up and walked to the edge of the wooden covered porch. He held his pipe gently, taking another puff, causing the red glow to briefly show before hissing out the smoke from between his lips. He leaned against the wooden porch rail, his blue eyes not leaving the dirt road that faded into the darkness of the forest, he should have been back by now.

The coyotes continued to yip excitedly from miles away, they must have had a successful kill. The moon reflected off the drops of moisture that littered the trees, the grass, the long vines that grew around the porch walls but still those blue eyes watched the darkness in the trees. An owl made itself known by calling out to its mate before swooping quietly from its branches and into the shadows.

Crossing his arms and sticking his pipe back into his mouth, he scowled. “Stupid big headed egotistical teme,” he grumbled aloud to no one. Snaps echoed from the dark forest and his eyes flickered to where he thought the noise was. “Thinking he is all that, what does he think he is? A ninja?” Naruto’s eyes flashed over the area where the darkened tree lined forest started. Snapping of branches from the trees continued to make noise in various areas and his heart began to flutter. “Y-yeah, he better not be thinking that I won’t shoot him if he scares me,” he spoke aloud again, his heart hammering loudly in his chest, the fear of the noises that wouldn’t stop still echoing through the trees. “I got my gun all set now, so don’t be scaring me!” he then yelled out, trying his best to sound strong. ‘Probably just a rodent making all that noise,’ he told himself quietly. He wouldn’t be scared of a few noises, no sir no way!

A familiar rustling noise of something moving on the dirt road caught his attention. He stood up straighter, leaning forward against the wooden porch rail and he squinted his eyes towards the shadowed area of the road, as if that would help him see.

The moon happened at that moment to hide behind a passing cloud, causing whatever moonlight there was to vanish and Naruto’s pipe fell from his mouth, dropping quietly to the grassed area below. He tilted his head slightly, trying to strain his ears to listen to the noises coming from the darkened path.

Horse! The sound of Sasuke’s horse! Naruto grinned widely, his body shivering with excitement and relief at hearing the familiar clopping noises of a horse riding up the dirt path. Any second now, the horse and his teme, would break from the shadows and finally, finally be back. He hugged himself and rubbed his arms to try and suppress the shivers of his excitement and the slight chill of the cold. He couldn’t stop his lips from smiling but ‘oh that teme is gonna get it! Scaring me like this!’ He chuckled though, knowing that he couldn’t stay mad at him.

The familiar horse sounds of trotting got louder and Naruto stepped down from the porch, intent on meeting Sasuke. He stood firm in the grass, his hands on his hips and gave a stern look on his face as the horse and rider broke through the shadows and into the yard before Naruto. The cloud that hid the moon had moved away just in time for the moonbeams to fall upon the rider, highlighting the vibrant bright orange pumpkin head that held black triangle eyes, nose and gnarled teeth. The horse reared up at a sudden stop, kicking its front feet up and Naruto stumbled back, his eyes wide in fear, his throat closed up and he couldn’t speak, scream nor squeak. He tripped onto his ass, his blue eyes wide, round and staring at the being that rode upon Sasuke’s horse.

A piercing roar came from the pumpkin head, its eyes focused solely on Naruto when the horse fell back to all fours. “YOU! I’ve come for you SOUL! MUHAHAHAHA!!!” The loud shrieking being howled out and Naruto screamed.

Naruto struggled to crawl backwards away from the horse and beast, the maniacal laughter piercing through the night but his eyes couldn’t look away. For on the horse before the beast, lay a body that was all too familiar. The pumpkin headed being flew off the horse, a large black cape billowing behind it and it slammed into the ground, causing a shock wave. It then reached up to pull the body of the man off the horse to the ground, cackling loudly and crazy when the body fell heavily into the soil.

Naruto screamed in terror, surprise and hurt. “SASUKE! No no no no NO!!” Naruto tried to move forward, towards his lover, his friend, his everything that currently lay lifeless on the ground.

“His SOUL was AMAZINGGGGggg!! Now, my pretty little thing-- I want YOURS! HA HA HA HA!!” The pumpkin headed figure squealed out in laughter and began to walk towards Naruto.

Naruto gasped out, his eyes looking up in fear at that was coming for him. His eyes flickered back to Sasuke’s lifeless body on the ground. He needed to get to him, to hold him, to help Sasuke but--but, that thing! That being! It was inhuman! It was a demon! And it was coming straight for him…

Naruto turned and scrambled on his hands and knees on the ground, trying to get up from the wet grass. “NO, you can’t! SAS--no SAS! I-I’m c-coming!” Naruto found his footing and stood up quickly, turning to face the pumpkin faced demon that continued to laugh maniacally and reach out towards him. Tears streaked down his face when his blues saw the lifeless Sasuke on the ground still. The sight though flared up an anger deep down inside and he stoked it, fanned it and inhaled all the anger and agony he could from seeing what this creature had done to Sasuke, his everything. “HOW DARE YOU, YOU, MONSTER!Naruto screamed out his war cry and drove himself straight into the pumpkin headed demon. “YOU had NO RIGHT!” he screamed out as he felt himself fall into the ground, the demon below him. “I’ll KILL YOU, I’ll KILL YOU!” Naruto howled out as he straddled the creature, throwing his clenched fists into the pumpkins head, feeling the head meld around his fists gave him more strength to hit it again, again, again.

Tears continued to fall, Naruto’s voice howled out with hurt, pain and rage as he struggled to punch at the demon’s head. His mind fogged over with despair seeing Sasuke’s body lifeless, on the ground, replaying over and over. His body was winded when something hit him hard from the front and landed on his chest when his back hit the cold ground.

Panicking Naruto howled out again, his eyes squeezed shut from the unknown attacker on his body now and he continued to thrash at the demon who was on his chest, “no no no! I’ll kill you! SASUKE NOOO!!

“NARUTO! Stop! Stop! STOP! NARUTO!” A voice screamed out and pierced the night air.

“No! No...S-Sas’k...no…” Naruto sobbed out, his body exhausted at his adrenaline fueled assault against the demon. He had lost. His body shuddered and shook, his eyes pinched closed as he wailed out in agony, he fell limp on the ground and waited for death.

“Naruto…” the voice called out over his head.

Naruto stopped wailing, his body still shaking from the hysterically crying but he stopped making noise and listened.

“Naruto...open your eyes, please.”

Naruto felt the weight from the being on his body lesson, something that was holding his shoulders down just moments ago was no longer. He moved his head so his face was facing the sky and opened his eyes. His eyes were blurry, from the onslaught of tears but the form that was hovering over him was one he knew all too well. Raven locks hung around the smooth marble skin, the outline of his jaw was sharp as ever, the straight nose, perfectly manicured eyebrows that shaped those midnight coloured almond shaped eyes and those dark orbs were etched with concern and sadness.

“Sas-? Wha?” Naruto managed to stutter out between his hiccuped sobs. He brought his fingers up to the smooth outlined cheeks of his love, gently touching as if testing if Sasuke was really there. “Am I dead? Is this heaven?” he whispered out, tracing the cheek bone softly from Sasuke’s temple to his nose.

A familiar snort came from the face that hovered above Naruto. “No dobe, you aren’t dead.” He grabbed Naruto’s wandering hand and pressed it against his cheek, pale fingers covering warm tanned hand.

“But, what? You were -- the demon -- I saw you--”

“Naruto, dude, I’m sorry, it was a joke!” A new voice popped up from behind Sasuke.

Naruto glanced over and saw the pumpkin headed being step closer to them.

“Sasuke! RUN!” Naruto began to panic and squirm before trying to grab Sasuke to roll him over and protect him.

“Stop stop! It’s okay! I’m sorry!” The pumpkin beast waved its arms up in surrender. Naruto settled suddenly and narrowed his eyes at the pumpkin head. “It was just a joke, really, I’m sorry I scared you so much!” The pumpkin headed being bent over slightly and its hands went to grab at the pumpkin head. “I just, you know, wanted to get you back for that stunt the other day!”

Naruto’s eyes widened in surprise, as the pumpkin head slipped down and onto the ground, and the demon body that was still there, stood back up and a large toothy grin and messy brunette hair was in the place now instead of the pumpkin.

“KIBA? KIBA?! You--you-- why you FUCKING ASSHOLE!!” Naruto shrieked out. “Let me at em Sasuke! LET ME FUCKING AT EM!” Naruto struggled under Sasuke’s body, struggling to get up, growling and spitting but Sasuke sat on him harder and pressed his hands into the blond’s shoulders.

Kiba began to step back from the enraged blond, shaking his head and hands. “L-look I’m sorry Naru, but, but you had it coming! Remember what you did to me first!” Kiba chuckled nervously.

Naruto didn’t stop and Sasuke turned his head to look at Kiba. “You better get going, I don’t know how much longer I can hold him,” he chuckled out as he struggled to hold the hot headed blond down.

“Let me up Sasuke, I swear to god if you don’t--”

Sasuke smirked at the riled up blond beneath him. “What do you think you can do-- dobe?” he mocked at him.

“Y-Yeah okay, thanks Sasuke man,” Kiba stuttered out and turned around quickly. “Talk to you guys tomorrow!” Kiba’s footprints were heard disappearing into the darkness and down the dirt road. He just lived the next farm over, so Sasuke wasn’t worried about him. He turned back to look down at his blond, who had settled down and was just staring at him, his blue orbs still glistening from the tears. Sasuke felt the guilt strike through him and he used his thumb to wipe away the tears. “I’m sorry,” he whispered out, his eyes looking into the crystals he fell in love with so easily. “It really was just a prank.” He sat up, sliding off the blond’s hips and pulling Naruto up with him until they sat chest to chest, face to face, nose to nose.

“I was really scared Sas,” Naruto whispered, his eyes looking between those almond shaped eyes. “I - I really thought I lost you.” He lowered his face then, the fear of losing Sasuke filling him up again, the vision of Sasuke’s body falling lifelessly to the ground.

“Forgive me?” Sasuke asked as he lifted that tanned face back up with his fingers under the chin, until he found those beautiful blue eyes. “It was Kiba’s idea just to scare you with the costume, but I knew it would be unbelievable unless there was an actual body involved.” Sasuke shrugged. “I guess it worked to good, hmm?” He gave a unsure smile at the blond and waited. He was nervous that he really overdid it. He didn’t realize that Naruto would be so fearful of his death that it led to him crying out hysterically. Those shimmering eyes still stared straight back at him, Naruto gave nothing away on what he was thinking, feeling and that, was unusual itself, since Naruto was known to wear his feelings on his sleeve.

Several moments passed and Sasuke felt himself becoming extremely nervous. The blond still hadn’t said anything and just stared at him. Had he really blown it this time? Was he ever going to forgive him?

“Well,” Naruto squeaked out, that sounded like a small mouse.

Sasuke held his breath.

“You guys did an awesome job!” Naruto then released a laugh and a grin. Sasuke released the breath he was holding. “But!” He then stopped suddenly and narrowed his eyes at Sasuke, a frown on his face. “Be on guard nowteme,” he growled out, “because I will stop at nothing to get back at you guys! Believe it!” He nodded his head firmly before getting up off the ground. “Now, get up here teme,” he barked out, holding out his hand to the raven still on the ground. “Because you are not, not, getting away with not being punished!”

Sasuke blinked surprisingly as he looked at the outstretched hand and then the firm look his lover was giving him. He slowly put his hand into the other and was pulled roughly into the strong arms of his blond, causing him to gasp out a breath.

“And don’t think you are getting what you want tonight, teme,” Naruto growled out huskily and licked Sasuke’s neck before giving a small bite.

Sasuke gasped at the dominating assault, the sensations rushing to his cock immediately and causing him to release an uncontrollable shiver. Naruto growled, pleased with the reaction he was receiving and tugged at him, dragging him towards the cabin. It was time to pay the price for his joke and Sasuke looked forward to it.
