Eyes are the windows to the soul
No regrets. No final wishes. It had to be done. It must be done. But why is it so scary? Doing something to help friends and family and yet the idea of dying for them was something that wasn't what scared the female. It was the idea of failing again.
Clinching her legs to her chest, Rin sat on her bed in her little apartment in Konoha. With her sitting in the fetal position, her head resting upon her knees and her arms tight around her legs. She had been sitting in darkness for many hours it felt like, just sitting and contemplating about what future they might have. But in truth, the jinchuuriki and bijuu have been in conversation for hours about one really hard topic in particular: the Akatsuki.
The topic both frightened and angered both of them as rumors ran through the different villages and higher-ups. She couldn't just hide her head in the sand and pretend they weren't an issue anymore. First, going after Naruto those so many years ago only to fail because of Lord Jiraya, and then finding out that they had managed to kidnap and kill Gaara for the one-tail inside him. She blessed the Gods or whoever would listen that Naruto and a team were able to rescue him, but the reality was harsher for the female jinchuuriki..
There was not going to be a second chance for her..
Isobu had lost a brother and the kunoichi almost lost a close friend because of that terrorist organization. No one knew what they had planned to do with the beasts, but Rin knew if the pattern kept up they would go after her next. It was just luck that the rumors of the three tails being lost in the world were still rampant after the death of the Fourth Hokage, or they would have knocked on the front door years ago too.
While sitting in the less than comforting darkness of her room, the only sound being a clock in the hallway of her place, and the lone whimpers from the jinchuuriki, her body shook as some tears still ran down her cheeks. The long sleeves of her night robe became soaked as she lost count of how long she had been sitting there, unable to stop herself from shaking and crying, but there was no changing their minds. She was full of remorse, regret, and sorrow, but Rin couldn't give up their plans for her comfort.
Though her body sat in Konoha, on her bed, the medical ninja's mind also sat in a place that only she and her bijuu could access. She found comfort in this place many times through the years and this time was no different. Reaching his giant hand up toward the top of his head, where Rin sat in their shared mindscape, Isobu was trying his best to comfort his jinchuuriki but he could tell that it wasn't working. He could feel all the emotions just rolling off her, and tried his best not to get his involved as well, as they planned for the initial of their choices. The last part was going to be the most difficult to do, when would they enact it, and the turtle just hoped that she wouldn't chicken out.
Rin's bedroom had been filled with a thick, dense mist cloud for the past few hours that made it almost impossible to see inside, but she didn't need to see from on top of her bed. She gave up control over her genjutsu mist-like breath ability long ago and didn't care anymore. It didn't affect her and she was alone. That ability was tied to her feelings and state of mind and both had collapsed since the two power squads had first brought up the harsh reality they both had to experience.
The conversations with you had been going on for days and only getting more intense with each passing moment, but it was more on Rin's case than Isobu which was unbelievable. "You should talk to your friends." Isobu repeated to his jinchuuriki like he did every few times during the past few days. Rin pressed her head, as he used his fine skills to continue to caress her head with his finger, enjoying the comfort that came with the small contact the two could have without killing or hurting her. She let out a small sad, but content sigh then huffed with annoyance. "I know, but what are the chances that we will be fine?"
Rin tried to sound cheerful, but also sounded very foolish about the reality of the whole situation, and even her body betrayed her by shaking again. "We will be fine.. we can beat them and take them out.." Those words had been repeated a few times during their conversation a few times as well. If you repeat it enough then maybe it can become believable.. "Rin.." Isobu spoke her name in a low tone as he stopped and lowered his hand only to sigh just like her. "You really should at least talk to Kakashi... Clear the air if this ends up being a suicide mission." Rin's breath hitched in her throat when she heard her best friend's name from the turtle's mouth. Now that was different.
turned her head to the real world and gazed out the window at the night sky in view, her mind running a million miles an hour. She let go of her legs, grumbling at how sore her body had felt from the hours of being in that position, and moved to walk over to open the window to let a cool breeze in, as well as get rid of the mist she was creating. She leaned against the open window with her head on the cool glass, the change in temp felt nice on her overheated body. She nodded against the window in agreement. "Y-you're right.." She whispered to herself with no confidence at all. How was she going to go through with this...?
"Do it for Kakashi and Naruto's sake Rin. They deserve it." Isobu tried to comfort again, and though he has gotten a lot better over the years together to soothe his jinchuuriki's thoughts, it sometimes wasn't enough. Rin pressed her cheek against the glass to feel the cooling effect even more on her overheated and exhausted face, then closed her eyes once again to ponder some more.
If how Naruto acted when Gaara was taken had any sort of inkling of what might happen if she was taken, then the jinchuuriki couldn't handle the idea of what he might do if she was stolen stayed from the village. Naruto was strong, and so was Kakashi, but Rin couldn't risk their lives for her own. She wasn't worth it, especially with all the pain she had brought them throughout the years.
More time passed and Rin didn't even realize she had fallen asleep leaning against the glass, only to be startled awake by a few gentle knocks at her front door. She placed her hand on the glass to straighten her body, rubbing her other hand over her shoulder and neck, running her fingers over each scar that was in those areas, and against the sore muscles caused by that awkward angle. She shrugged into her hand and she debated if she had heard that noise. Rubbing her cheek as well as she could feel that it was red from the pressure of leaning on the glass. She was more exhausted than she must have realized. It was still really late and she had only fallen asleep for 10 minutes so who could be bothering her so late into the evening..?
Standing in silence again, the female wasn't sure if her mind was playing tricks or not, until another knock came from the front, but more frequent and louder this time. Walking out of her bedroom, she fixed and retied her robe to be more presentable. Whoever it was, Rin was in no mood to properly dress and at least she wasn't naked so win-win for everyone. She ran her still slightly damn sleeve over her eyes to try to clean up her face and try not to show what she had been doing, but again she still didn't fully care how she looked so late in the evening.
Walking to the front door, another knock came a little softer than before, causing Rin to get confused about what was going on. She turned on a hall light near the front door to be polite to her guest, not like the jinchuuriki needed it, and she unlocked her front door. She opened it fully and was welcomed by the arrival of the one person she probably wouldn't have a guest to visit her this late in the evening, her partner and best friend: Kakashi Hatake.
She let go of the handle of the door, quickly grab hold of her robe top and pulled it tight over her chest. Her face grew a little warm as her finger scratched one of the purple clan marks on her cheek in embarrassment. "Kakashi, um. Hello, are you okay?" She asked sheepishly then looked to the side unable to look at his reaction while she was dressed like that. She hadn't cared what she had been wearing, but with Kakashi here it was different. It was always different when he was involved.
"Hey, Rin. Good evening." Kakashi's tone came off cooly and calm, as he placed his hands in his pockets and stood rather nonchalantly in front of her. He looked at the attire she was wearing but chose not to say anything about it because he knew what time it was and the consequences of coming out so late. Rin then smiled as the embarrassment quickly melted away in an instant when he said her name, but she still couldn't get over how late it was, let alone how he didn't want to answer her question.
"Kakashi. It's late, are you sure you're okay?" Rin repeated his name, still clinching her robe, she crossed her other arm over the other to show a little bit of annoyance, but was still playful about the whole situation. If it was anyone else she would have just shut the door in their face. "Yeah, Rin, I'm fine. I was in the neighborhood and figured I'd come to visit you."Rin tilted her head in confusion and squinted her eyes toward him, not sure if she believed him or not, only for her to move him inside. The draft from outside was getting a bit much so better to talk inside than hover at the doorway.
With her back turned to him, her bare feet patted against the wood floor of her apartment, she knew he would follow, or didn't care what he did in her apartment. He could sleep over if he wanted, but this was still strange all the same. Very rarely did he just show up out of nowhere like that, and the young jinchuuriki felt like something was off. "Did you want some coffee or milk? It wasn't like I was trying to sleep, ya know." Rin joked as she turned the light on to help join see, from the kitchen toward the other man and poked her head out to watch him walk toward her after he removed his footwear.
"Coffee sounds fine. Sorry for visiting so late, I lost track of time." Rin started a pot for them both but stopped a moment when she placed two cups down for them to drink. She released the cups, and turned her head, only realizing that he was right behind her. She turned her body tightly against the counter and lifted her head to gaze up at his dark grey eye, giving him a content smile. Even with him being so close, they felt no awkwardness, but Rin still felt like there was still something in the air.. and not just on her part.
Rin opened her mouth, about to speak, but bit her lower lip as well as closed one of her eyes when Kakashi's hand was raised and he softly poked her clan tattoo on her cheek. "Rin, were you crying earlier?" Her eyes grew wide for a second and she gently pushed his hand to it away from her cheek with the back of her hand and rubbed her face with the back of her sleeve. She shouldn't be surprised. They couldn't keep secrets from each other. Especially with how terrible she must have been looking at that time.
"Uh.. yeah. Yeah, Kakashi I was." Rin admitted through the sleeve of her long robe, only for her to sigh and return to gazing at her best friend. "It wasn't much, just thinking about all that's been going on lately, it's nothing to worry about." She half lied to him, but knew it was just the start, the rabbit hole was going to grow deep tonight... Not wanting to talk about the reason, Kakashi could tell when to drop it and took a small step back out of respect for the jinchuuriki. "Okay, but you know you can always talk to me about anything, Rin. anything ." Her heart skipped a beat when she heard those words, she could only smile tightly to keep herself calm enough to keep from breaking down again. So much to say but she couldn't tell him her plans, he would just stop her then and there. Or worse go with her.
Rin reached out and put her palm on his green tactile vest that he normally wore, and tilted her head again. "Kakashi, why are you here?" She couldn't handle idle chat at that moment so cutting to the chase was best for her mental prowess. Kakashi reached with his hands and cliched to her hand on his chest with both of them, his expression becoming both softer but more serious at the same time. "There something going on with the Sharingan." Not sure how to react, Rin held both his hands with one while her other hand ghosted the left side of his face while she tried to read his expression. At that point in their relationship, the two friends could read each other like a book and Rin knew it was serious if he came to her about this and not just a normal doctor, but she understood why he did and was thankful for it.
"Okay, take a seat at the table. I'll take a look at it." Rin's tone gave off a smidge of worry about the seriousness of the situation, but still believed it wasn't too bad that she couldn't handle it. Kakashi released her hand and followed her direction to sit where asked. The female was quick to stand next to him once she had gathered some simple tools to make her job a little easier. The kunoichi was not entirely sure what she needed but better to be prepared for anything, especially when it came to dealing with something near and dear to the both of them: Obito's Sharingan.
"Let me take a look." Rin brought over a matching kitchen chair and parked it close to in front of Kakashi in case she needed to sit. She pressed her legs, standing, between his legs to get even closer to his face while his back was against the chair and he looked up at her standing figure. "I know you might have been overdoing it, but I doubt that would cause you to come to visit me, right, Kakashi?" She whispered with him being so close and gave a small joking tone to it. She reached up toward his face, this time touching it, and cupped his cheeks caringly.
Kakashi leaned into her touch, not breaking their eye contact, and let the healer do what she wanted. She gave a soft caring expression as one hand held his chin, while her other one lifted the headband that covered his Sharingan eye. Even after seeing it so many times, Rin couldn't handle how her breath hitched and her heartbeat increased when she looked into it. Something that Kakashi could always sense, but chose to ignore every time. She ran her thumb over the side of his face before returning her hands where they were before.
"What seems to be the problem?" Rin whispered as she leaned in closer, tilting his head from side to side to see if she could see anything wrong with it. Kakashi held his hand up and placed it over one of hers while he just looked at her with both eyes for a while. It had been so long since the two of them just had some peace, and he couldn't help it that he might enjoy it more than he should have.
Rin picked up on his silence and comfort from a simple handhold, her cheeks slowly burning from the close contact, but as an adult and taking the seriousness of the situation easily pushed it from her mind. "Kakashi.." Rin whispered his name tightening her grip ever so slightly to wake him from whatever he was thinking about, and gazed at his Sharingan again. "I don't know why, but the past few missions that I've used it, my vision in it changes. It's hard to explain." Listening to his explanation, Rin pondered for a moment and let out a soft murmur. She was far from the expert when it came to eyes, nowhere close enough, but that was strange even for her... And she died once.
"Mm-hm.." Rin still held onto his face but pulled back her body to think of anything that came to mind. That was such a weird phenomenon and even isobu was stumped. "It doesn't happen all the time, you say?" Trying to make sure she heard it right, she knew she didn't, it was just her way of running some ideas through her mind, but all she could be shrug in loss and Kakashi have a nod at his answer. She raised her free hand, pressed her palm over Kakashi's Sharingan, and did her normal healing gig, even slipped in some of Isobu's chakra to see if that helped, but she was at a loss on how to help. Kakashi allowed her to work, watching her deeply, and still pressed his face tightly into her hand, holding the other one with his hand as well. Apart from his feeling that if she let go she would disappear from his life.
That feeling of dredge had been growing with each passing day and with that feeling came the weird visions from his Sharingan. One moment he's training in battle, the next he is in a cave or looking at people he has never seen before, it was bizarre and always so blurry. "With it being something that doesn't happen all the time, I guess I would say just limit use if you can. Maybe it's from overuse."
She removed her palm from over his eye before leaning her own body forward and pressing her forehead against his. The cold steel of his headband sent a shiver down her burning body, even more than the window did, but she closed her eyes for a moment. Kakashi stared at her expression, taking note of all the details and memorizing her face from this close-up. She kept her eyes closed and gave a small smirk when she spoke to him.
"Too bad we can't just go ask the Ninetails about it, I'm sure he would want to have a nice chat about the Sharingan." Rin could feel the disgust that Isobu felt when he heard about his other brother and only shook his head toward her joke. It was in bad taste to the bijuu, but still didn't hold against her.. but it was only a little funny. A tiny bit.
As she finally opened her eyes to look at him, Rin couldn't help, but gasp again when it finally clicked in her just how close she was. It had been so long since they were this close, and even longer since they had been more, she missed it. She really missed it. And she wanted more.
Without breaking eye contact, Rin wasn't sure how jonin was going to react, but she didn't care, not when their lives would change in a matter of days. She had to live in the moment, with no regrets between friends. "Kakashi.." Rin whispered his name as her legs pressed tight against the chair seat, begging to get closer to the man in front of her, she parted her lips and let out another mist-filled sigh toward his face.
Kakashi tightened the grip on her hand to his face and watched how her body was reacting at the moment, curious about what was causing this sort of reaction from the female. He knew it wasn't the full moon and he hasn't heard of anything happening to her the past few days so he was just as confused about her reaction as he was of his Sharingan. "Rin?" He returned her name in a soft questionable tone, unsure how to react to the questionable situation unfolding in front of him. He watched as Rin began to rub her knees together, how her heartbeat was increasing and her breath felt hot, even with his mask on. He couldn't ignore the mist that she was starting to produce as well with each breath she took.
Without much time to react to any negative feelings for what she was about to do, Rin tilted his face towards her and pressed her lips to his mask.
