She was forced to become a therapist
It had been approximately 14 years since she was reincarnated as a Yamanaka.
She worked in the hospital after she was taken off the mission roster as a chunin and had seen much more blood than she would've ever liked to. She has blood on her hands from working as both a medic and a ninja.
She had not met many of the main characters and she hoped that it stayed that way forever.
She met Minato once, he had led the mission she was given about an year ago. She never spoke to him again and he never did either. She had also seen Kushina a few times, her bright red hair was hard to ignore just as much as her loud and fiery personality. She had worked with Hatake Sakumo although it was only because he had to take a couple of low level missions as he had to take care of Kakashi. She had also worked with Orochimaru on the same mission as the one which she worked on with Sakumo. Apparently, taking low level missions was Orochimaru's way of taking a break. Or so she had heard.
She tried not to judge him for that and gave him some of her home cooked food while on the mission as a way of showing pity. She could tell he was very surprised by the gesture but he didn't say anything and she wasn't in the mood to talk at the time so they were then enveloped in an awkward silence.
"Oh, Yamanaka-san."-Yuri
Yuri, one of her only friends, paused in his paperwork as he looked up at her. He usually handled the staff of the hospital and was the backbone for making it work as good as it did with Tsunade leaving the village.
"How many times do I have to say this? Just call me Azumi. There are a lot of Yamanaka here, I and everyone else could get confused."-Azumi
Huffing slightly, she sat down besides him as she massaged her shoulders. She hadn't gotten any sleep last night with her being forced to work through the night.
"Right right, so Azumi-san, we've been having a shortage on the psychotherapists. The Yamanaka clan is mostly out on the frontlines giving support and some of them are at the Torture and Interrogation Department. Not many here that we could trust to be secretive about a shinobi's life and missions. So-" -Yuri
"You don't need to explain yourself. If I'm the only option left then I would've been forced to do it either way. Tell me my room so that I can set up and get comfortable. And get me the privacy seals by tomorrow morning. If you find anyone other than me who is capable of taking my job then let them do so."-Azumi
Azumi was annoyed. She didn't have a minute of rest before she was told her new job, which she would clearly be starting by today.
This was one of the reasons why Azumi and Yuri's friendship never grew any deeper. They could've been bestfriends by now but they were still friends. They were fine with it but they could tell that even their friendship was straining nowadays. She should probably talk about it but with Yuri's tendencies to avoid any serious conversation, exceptions being work, she doubted that she would ever be able to.
"Behave. I know you're tired but so is everyone else. Go to room number 180. If anyone's already been sent there then try to remain calm. There was a therapist there till yesterday but he was called to T&I due to an emergency. He likely won't be returning."-Yuri
"Got it."-Azumi
She grabbed the keys to the room from Yuri and walked out of his room.
'Just because I'm a Yamanaka they think that I'm skilled in the ways of the mind. I have never had therapy myself or even watched a therapy session. How the hell am I supposed to help others with that? Talk to them? I'm not Naruto.'
Huffing once again, she made her way to the unfamiliar room and opened the gate. There was nobody outside waiting for the therapist to arrive so she was more relieved than she thought.
Sitting on her new desk, she placed her head on the desk, and slept.
She didn't know how much time passed by but she was woken up with a knock at her door. She spread out her chakra a bit and checked who it was.
'F**k.'
Taking in a deep breath she cleared her throat.
"Come in please."-Azumi
A bright blonde with blue eyes came in the room. He looked a bit surprised seeing her, if the pause in his steps was anything to go by, but he quickly recovered and greeted her with a kind smile. In her opinion, he would've been a much better psychotherapist than she ever will be. But, reality was cruel and she was here as a therapist and not him.
"Hi there Minato-san, how can I help you?"-Azumi
She kept her voice leveled. Her face not showing much emotions except some tiredness and happiness. It was better to be the calmer one with shinobi.
"Oh well, I was here for a psych evaluation. Looks like the usual doctor isn't here Azumi-san?"-Minato
His smile never once left his face and Azumi could feel her own mood starting to brighten at that smile.
"The doctor is currently occupied with something else so I'll be with you today. If you could please fill out this form. I haven't received your previous evaluation papers yet so if you don't mind then I'll have to be asking you some questions."-Azumi
She passed him the identification form and he made quick work of it. It seemed as though he was quite used to filling it out.
She did have his previous psych evaluation papers. But she also knew just how stubborn and uselessly clever shinobi were. A lot of them, including her once, would easily be able to twist the conversation so that the doctor would have no choice but to judge their mental health based on the previous psych evaluation forms they had filled. She felt a bit motivated currently so she would try her best to judge her patients minds' accurately.
And even though she wanted to believe that the man sitting in front of her was completely fine and didn't need therapy, she still had a job to do and even if she was forced into it she would still do her job properly.
"So I've heard that you've been doing quite a lot of missions lately Minato-san."-Azumi
"Yes, as you know the war has been going on for a while now."-Minato
His smile dimmed a bit, likely due to talking about the war. Or perhaps it was worry for the future of his friends and students.
"Yes, so could we talk about your last mission? How it went and how you felt?"-Azumi
"Well, the last mission was on the borders of Iwa."-Minato
They both knew what that sentence meant. Iwa and Kiri were the most brutal when it came to disposing enemy shinobi. Anyone fighting with them would experience a different kind of gory fight. Most of the shinobi after the fighting would be given at least 5 psych evaluations. Taking in a calm breath, she asked him some questions about his mental psych during the past few weeks and then the past few months.
"It is a heartbreaking situation. But do remember that part of being human is feeling empathy for others. Even if it seems like you're being a hindrance by showcasing your emotions so much."-Azumi
She advised him to take control over little things in life he had, like taking a nap or eating his favorite food instead of something else, as it was a better way of coping.
The session went forward without much problems and she couldn't help but feel a headache brewing. Although he wasn't as bad as some others she knew, but he was still suffering with PTSD and would likely need some sessions in between his mission breaks. She hoped that he didn't come to her for the time being as she was sure that she would just say something stupid and make the whole situation worsen, but if he did then she would have to deal with it.
The next patient was a civilian woman, also suffering from PTSD. She had never actively participated in war herself but the effects were clear as day. Apparently, she was now rich enough to afford a Yamanaka as a doctor even though she was a civilian.
She had to change every single question and even her behavior to some extent to make her comfortable. Civilians weren't like shinobi and they had different mannerisms and different lives. She was just glad that the civilian woman seemed to lighten up when she left. Hopefully, she could keep up her good work.
Sighing tiredly she locked up for the day and went back to report to Yuri.
