Guess Who?
Kakashi’s room was stale. Damp almost.
He wasn’t a kid anymore, but this day always brought him back to that same dark place. In Kakashi’s heart it was like Obito had died just moments ago.
He inhaled with a sniffle, wiped the tears from his eyes as he turned over in bed and buried his face in the pillow with a sad, silent sigh. The school board hadn’t been happy that he was calling off so shortly after getting out of the hospital, but what could they expect from him? They knew he never worked this day. His phone vibrated rudely on his chin from beneath the pillow. Ugh, probably his boss.
Kakashi heaved a heavy sigh and pulled his phone out, squinting through the glaring light it shone on his face. Text from…..an unknown number. Maybe a faculty member who had only reached him by email previously?
Kakashi rolled back onto his back, muttering a sleepy “Sorry…” as his foot collided gently with Pakkun, who was sleeping faithfully at the foot of his bed. Pakkun notoriously refused to let Kakashi spend the anniversary of Obito’s death alone, despite Kakashi’s protests. Still Kakashi couldn’t deny he had a point….things could get ugly quickly when he was left to his own devices on this day.
With a flick of his thumb Kakashi opened the message. It was surprisingly brief.
Hey. How’ve you been?
Who in the…?
His thumbs flitted quickly over the letters as he penned his irritated response. Who would bother him like this on today of all days?
? Who is this. Send. Kakashi rolled his eyes and slammed his phone face down on his mattress. It vibrated in response quicker than he anticipated.
It’s Obito.
Kakashi’s heart dropped into his stomach like a rock. He felt shock for less than half a second as his blood ran cold; and then his eyes were welling with tears so large he couldn’t see. Pakkun’s ears perked up as Kakashi’s heaving sobs became audible. He quickly padded over to comfort his pup, nuzzling into Kakashi with his tiny head and leaning his weight against him. Kakashi accepted the familiar comfort instinctually, clung to Pakkun, buried his face in his fuzzy neck and just breathed, until the world wasn’t spinning in agony anymore.
“Boss…..what happened….?”
“Someone’s fucking with me Pakkun.” Kakashi huffed, another rogue tear spilling down his cheek as he reached for his phone, opened it with a deep scowl on his face.
“Don’t answer them if they’ll make you that upset….” Pakkun mumbled, but he could see the angry determination in Kakashi’s eyes. He was already typing.
Fuck you. Seriously go fuck yourself whoever you are I don’t fucking need this.
Kakashi’s eyes widened in anger and fear as the typing icon immediately appeared.
Please don’t block me. Please don’t block me. Kakashi really it’s me it’s Obito.
The tears were already beginning to fall again. Pakkun whined sympathetically as Kakashi began to shake with anxiety.
How can you say that??? How can you say something like that. Holy fuck who is this? What do you want?!?
Kakashi grabbed onto Pakkun again, hugging him as he stared at the screen, awaiting the next dose of torture.
What he saw next he couldn’t explain.
When the picture came through, Kakashi felt the earth stand still on its axis. A slightly grainy selfie, dimly lit but well enough that the face and features were easy to make out, more than apparent.
Those familiar features, once soft and boyish, had grown into the chiseled beauty of a handsome young man. Half a face uniquely scarred, just like it would be had he survived the accident….
Uchiha Obito.
Kakashi shot up to a seated position so fast it startled Pakkun from the bed. His hands shook as he fumbled with his phone, clicked onto the unsaved number and pressed ‘call’.
“WAIT, NO…” He hung up before he could give him a chance to answer and switched to video call instead. He had to absolutely confirm that this was Obito.
Ringing.
Ringing.
And finally, the chime of an answered call, and a black screen.
