Death By Life
You wake up. The floor is wet, and you’re so cold. You look around, for something to warm you up, but it’s empty. It’s so empty. It’s so dark. You can’t see anything, and all you feel is cold.
Breathe. You must breathe. You take a deep breath, but it doesn’t work. Your lungs have stopped working. They will not support you anymore. This time, you must do it on your own. As you wonder what has happened, your body is seeping deeper into the wooden floors. It’s so cold.
Is anyone there?
Can anyone hear me?
—
Lilith stared at the trees. She walked up to the one with the thickest trunk. Had to be as old as the isles themself. The swirls and divots, the discoloring of the bark, it’s something forever changing and beautiful. When it dies, when she dies, everything will swirl and twist.
Her head rests against the tree. Her sister is lingering nearby. Eda has been planning where the rest of the graves will go. The two are going to start digging the graves before any more of them die. It’s been far too taxing to dig the graves right when the guards die. “I think I’m gonna have them scattered!” Eda exclaims like this is the best idea ever.
“Mhm.” Lilith hums.
“What’s up with you?” Eda questions, she places her hand on her hip.
“Just thinking.” Lilith replies.
“About?” This back and forth needs to end, her head is pounding.
“Everything that’s happened. Everything that’s going to happen.” Lilith lets out a sigh. “About us. King, Luz, Hooty…” She says Hooty’s name longingly.
“This whole experience has me questioning how anyone would willingly become a hospice nurse.” Eda attempts a joke, it fails. Lilith doesn’t even give her a pity smile.
Lilith gets up, now resting her back against the tree. “This will kill Darius. Just like it did the first time. But he doesn’t have the ability to just give up for a month. Yet he still will.”
“Maybe he’ll do better this time.” Lilith gives her sister the biggest side eye ever. “Yeah I know. But what can we do about it? I’m far too busy trying to care for the guards.” Lilith nods her head. “Shit!” Eda mumbles, loudly–or at least loud enough to where Lilith can hear it.
“Hm?” Lilith hums in a questioning tone, raising an eyebrow. “Forget to turn off the oven again? I’m sure someone has gotten it by now.”
“Luz is coming in the morning.” Eda turns her head up to the sky and sighs, clutching her fist. The skinny tree next to her receives the blow of her anger. “Titan, how could I forget!”
“You’re letting her come? What about everything that’s happening?” Lilith finally gets off the tree. She steps towards her sister, shocked and frustrated. “Why would you let her come in a time like this?”
“Because she wanted to…?” Eda shrugs, and nervously fidgets. “Look what was I supposed to say?” She moved her arms up preparing to mock herself, “No Luz you can’t come to your own home even though it’s your home! Guess you’ve gotta find somewhere else to live!” Eda gets up in Lilith’s face. “Is that what you want me to say? HM?”
“You are acting like a child! I cannot stand you!” Lilith shoves her sister, lightly, and folds her arms, turning around as she does so.
“Oh I’m the child?” Eda questions, wobbling, as she tries to balance herself. Lilith nods. “How’s this for childish!” She shoves her sister. Causing Lilith to topple over.
The two fight for a while, until they become too tired to continue. Lilith is laying in the dirt, Eda is pushed up against a tree. Her arms wrapped around her knees, her head resting on top of them. “We need to dig the graves before the sun comes up.” Lilith reminds her tired sister.
“Yes, I know.” Eda mumbles, not lifting her head. It’s alright, Lilith can still hear her just fine. She’s learned how to decipher her words after so many years of this.
“Come on, help me.” Lilith sighs, getting up. She walks over to Eda, and holds out a hand. Eda takes it, she always does. “You dig, I place the headstones.”
“Mhm, got it. They’re in the closet under the stairs.” Eda says, before grabbing the shovel that’s by the door. Lilith walks inside the house, and becomes engulfed in the darkness. Eda can no longer see her. “Titan, Lily.” She mutters to herself, before heading towards the forest.
Piles of dirt are now on the grass. Eda is standing above the hole she just dug. The shovel is in her hand. She’s gripping the handle rather hard, full of this overwhelming sense of dread. It’s deep, the hole.
Lilith is hiking up the quote on quote mountain, all the headstones in her hands. She looks funny, but even that won’t make Eda laugh. “I’ve almost dug them all. Just two more.” Eda says, no emotion in her voice. Lilith nods, and begins to stick the headstones into the ground behind the holes while Eda is digging.
After what felt like forever, the two were finally finished. Eda and Lilith both stared at the mass grave yard in the woods, but eventually headed back inside. The sun was coming up by the time they had. Which meant today would feel like hell. “Y’know…” Eda began, her voice soft as to not wake anyone up. “If you told me a month ago that I’d be burying a bunch of Hunter’s I would’ve laughed. But I’m not laughing now.”
Lilith didn’t reply. She just looked down, a faint smile, a pained one, on her face. Eda looked away from her sister, but didn’t leave. Somehow, this might have brought the two closer together. Eda has been missing her sister, now that she’s back, it’s nice. Not that she hasn’t been hanging out here. She stays over a lot, but not enough. “I’m sorry, Edalyn.” Lilith whispers.
“For?” Eda questions, but she doesn’t get a response. Lilith just walks off. Presumably to Eda’s room. “Okay then?” Eda mumbles to herself, confused. Faint snores can be heard omitting from the couch. Right, people are asleep here. She stares at them, wondering. Titan, she is tired. Eda heads for the stairs. When she reaches the top, she is out of breath. Huffing and puffing, but still, she needs to get to her room.
The door is closed, but not locked. Thank titan for small miracles. She opens it, gently, and slowly so that she doesn’t make too much noise. Everything is ten times louder when everyone in the house is asleep. The wooden floor creaks with every step. She steps inside the room. Lilith is asleep on the floor, a blanket wrapped around her. Eda walks to her nest, and flops inside.
The bright sunlight wakes her up. It’s been two hours. Her eyes are heavy as she sits upright. Lilith isn’t there. The blanket has been folded neatly and placed next to Eda’s vanity. “Of course Lily is up.” Eda groans, and she pushes herself out of the nest. Her legs wobble, but other than that, she’s ready to go.
There is relative silence throughout the house, which scares her. Usually it’s rather chaotic. But no worries, it’s probably nothing. Unless somehow, everyone dropped dead at the same time. No way, that’s not possible. Right? Now she’s hyperventilating. As she runs down the hallway, she’s pulled into Lilith’s room.
“Shh! Titan, Eda! Why were you being so loud? Running? Everyone in the house could probably hear you!” Lilith begins to scold Eda almost immediately.
“Why is it still so quiet? Is everyone okay? Did they all…” Eda doesn’t want to finish her sentence. She can’t stomach it. The thought, the truth.
“No.” Lilith furrows her brows. “No, but uhm.” Lilith points at Darius who is cradling a dead body. He’s sobbing, and ugly sob. Eda’s never seen him like this. She didn’t even know he could be like this. Sure he can cry, but not like this. “He won’t let John go.”
“Let’s leave him. We can deal with this later. I’d say it’s time for everyone else to get up.” Eda replies. “Come on.” She leaves the room, Lilith trails behind her.
A scream rings out from downstairs. A “Help!” follows. Eda and Lilith both rush to the origin of the sound. It came from Adam.
Todd didn’t wake up. He somehow died in his sleep. Adam had woken up first. Instead of trying to wake up Todd, he just stared at him. Watching him sleep. But after a while, he decided to try to wake him up. However he never got a response. “It’s not fair!” Adam yelled. “Why hadn’t he just fallen? Why did he die so quickly!”
Paul snorted. “Adam, take a moment to think. Todd was underdeveloped. Obviously he'd die quicker. It’s fate. A predetermined destiny.”
“Shut up!” Adam jumped up, and began towards Paul, but fell right before he was able to do anything. “Ow!” Then the realization hit.
“Oh shit.” Eda gasped. Lilith elbowed Eda and gave her a glare. Eda just rolled her eyes back, before focusing back on Adam. “Okay Lilith, help me get Adam up to your room.” Lilith nodded, and the two grabbed him.
“Be careful!” Adam cried out. “I’m fragile.”
“Wait…Darius.” Eda said, her eyes going wide. “Shit!”
“We need more help, something tells me they’re going to be dropping like flies.” Lilith replies, the two now slowly stepping up the stairs. This is always the worst part.
“I don’t want to force anyone to help us! I mean who even would. And don’t you dare say Luz! I refuse to have her help with this.” Eda barks at Lilith.
“I was not going to suggest Luz! I know she is a child! Who do you take me for?” Eda gives her a look. “Okay actually, nevermind, don’t answer that!” Eda chuckles and Lilith goes red. “I suggest giving Raine a call.”
“Raine?” Eda questions. But before she can give them any more thought, the two are in front of Lilith’s room. “Okay, hold on, I’ll go talk to Darius.”
“Okay.” Lilith replies as Eda opens the door, enters the room, and closes the door behind her. Lilith is standing outside, Adam looks grumpy. “Sorry, let me just!” She scooped him up bridal style, with ease.
Eda comes back out. Her face is solemn. “He won’t budge. Just put Adam on the empty bed. I’m gonna give Raine a call to see if they can help Darius.”
“Alright.” Lilith replies, before heading inside and shimming past Darius over to the other bed so that she can put Adam on there. He grunts as he’s set on the bed. Lilith apologizes but he waves her off and gives a weak smile and thank you. “I can sit in here with you if you’d like.” Lilith offers. Adam nods and Lilith sits on the floor next to the bed.
Downstairs Eda has a crow in her hand. “Hi Rainestorm.” She begins, her mouth is dry. “I’m calling because I need help.”
A voice can be heard from the speaker. “Need my help? I tried to help but you pushed me away.” There was anger. Eda felt a wave of deja vu from this conversation.
“I know. I’m sorry. I just didn’t want you to have to deal with this problem.” Eda could feel tears begin to well up. “It’s not your responsibility to clean up my– these messes.”
“It’s not your sole responsibility either! You didn’t do this! Therefore, it isn’t all on you. You don’t have to hold the weight of the world on your shoulders.” Raine replies. Eda doesn’t reply, instead she looks up, in order to keep the tears in. “I can be there in ten minutes tops.”
With that, the call ended. Raine was the one who hung up. Eda took a deep breath and put away the crow. She heads for the couch, and sits down. No guards in there, they all are off doing something else. Caleb is cooking for William, Ronald, and Kevin. Paul is likely upstairs, checking on Adam. Maybe not checking on him per se, more like bullying him.
Hooty opens the door, without Eda even hearing a knock. It’s Raine. They’re finally here. Eda jumps up and runs over to them. This is the first time they’re seeing each other for a couple of days. She wraps her arms around them and pulls them in. “Eda!” Raine yells, but doesn’t pull away. “I missed you too.”
Eda finally lets go of Raine, “There are already a few dead. But my main problem is Darius.” She’s staring at the floor while she says this, only occasionally looking back up at them.
“What’s wrong with Darius?” Raine questions, worry in their voice. This makes Eda realize that she worded that sentence really badly.
“Oh no! He’s not hurt! It’s just.” How does she even put this? “John died, like a few hours ago, and Darius refuses to let me or Lilith take the body to bury it.”
“And?” Raine questions.
“Well, we need that bed. Adam has already fallen, so who knows when the next one will. So I need your help moving him.”
Raine gave a small nod. “Okay. Where is he?” They asked. Eda pointed at the stairs, but then just decided it would be better to just take them there instead. So the two headed towards Lilith’s room. Eda opened the door, but allowed Raine to enter first.
“I’ll leave you two be.” Eda whispered, before walking off, not wanting to deal with that situation.
—
Luz Noceda, the savior of the boiling isles. Amity stared at her as she woke up. Reaching her arms to the sky–stretching–and letting out a rather loud yawn. “Goodmorning, Sweet Potato.” Amity smiles.
“Morning, Amity.” Luz said tiredly. She rubbed her eyes, wiping away any eye boogers. “Wait! What time is it?” She asked, suddenly frantic.
Amity turned over to her alarm clock, and then turned back. “9:30. Why?” She asked.
“I’m supposed to be finally going home! Crap! I wanted to get there at like 8:00!” Luz yelled as she rolled out of the bed and ran over to her bag. She was in search for clothes. Sadly, she ran out of them. “I guess I’ll just be sporting pajamas today.” Luz frowned.
“Do you want to wear my clothes? I know they’re not exactly your style but–”
“Oh em gee! Thank you Amity!” Luz ran over to her girlfriend and scooped her up. Then she swung her around. “You da best.”
“Oh stop!” Amity giggled. After a while, Luz was dressed in a semi gothic outfit and ready to head home for the first time in a while.
“I’m sorry you can’t come with me.” Luz said with a frown. “I really wish you could! But Eda was all like,” She did a fake cough and switched her voice, doing a horrible Eda impression, “Luz, you can’t bring anyone else! I’m barely okay with you coming!”
“It’s okay!” Amity replied. “I’m not sure how much of a help I could be for this anyways. I mean what even happened? What’s so bad?”
“Oh right! You weren’t there when Gus casted that spell. You only heard the aftermath, huh?” Amity nodded. “In full honesty, I’m not sure. I think they’re dying? But Eda refused to actually tell me full on. It was just implied. I think that she doesn’t want to say it.” Luz explained.
Amity and Luz both hugged before Luz left the Blight Manor. Amity walked her out to the gate, but after that, Luz was on her own. Stringbean made the trip to the Owl House much quicker, thank titan. But in a way that wasn’t the best, as she wasn’t sure what it would be like inside the house. What if it’s pure chaos? “Even if it is. I’ll do what I can to help.” Luz mumbled to herself.
The house was stationary. The lights were all on, and there was some sound coming from the inside, it sounded like talking, but Luz couldn’t make any of the words out. She looked at Hooty, but he was empty. Luz was pretty sure this was because Hooty fed off the energy that was inside the house, so when it was pure dismay, he couldn’t survive in those conditions. Luz sighed, before knocking on the door.
It came flying open but a second later. “Luz!” Eda hollered, before pulling the girl into a hug. “I’ve missed you so much. I’m sorry for not letting you come sooner kid, but it’s been pure hell.”
“I can assume so.” Luz replied, with a somber laugh. Eda chuckled in the same light. There was tension that Luz could feel but couldn’t quite place. “So can I come inside?”
“Oh yeah! Sorry.” Eda let go of Luz and let her inside. The living room was empty, which gave off an eerie vibe. However that vibe quickly washed away when she heard a conversation coming from the kitchen.
“Is someone cooking? Or just hanging out in the kitchen?” Luz asked. “Either way, I wanna get in on this.” She smiled, and before Eda could say anything in response, she was off. Inside the kitchen was Ronald, Kevin, and Caleb. They were all sitting at the dining room table. “Hey guys!” Luz boomed, as she grabbed a seat.
“Oh hello!” Caleb smiled. “What are you doing here?” He questioned, but not in a mean way, more in a genuinely interested way.
“Oh, y’know.” Luz shrugged. “She said I could come back. So I did. Plus I do live here. And I want to help!” She slammed the table, launching herself up. “Oh! Do you guys need help?!” Ronald and Kevin both flinched.
“Not quite. We were just discussing burial plans and things like that.” Caleb said, relaxed. “Well me and Kevin were, Ronald cannot of course.”
“Oh is Kevin feeling better?” Luz asked Caleb, instead of asking Kevin, which made her catch a death glare from him. “I mean, Kevin, are you feeling better?”
“Thank you and yes I am. For once I feel fully here. I dunno why my brain has been so staticky lately. Must’ve been too stressed or something.” Kevin shrugged.
“Oh yeah that makes sense.” Luz nodded. “Where’s everyone else? I didn’t see anyone in the kitchen? I’d expect Adam and Paul to be fighting or something.”
“Adam is upstairs in Lilith’s room. Paul is there too, I think. Last time I heard he was teasing him. Which I’m very disappointed about, but I don’t have the energy to stop him.” Caleb explained to a very confused Luz.
“Oh yeah. I forgot that Lilith’s room was turned into a bedroom. Uh but why is Paul teasing Adam about it? And what about everyone else? I heard Darius was here with John.”
The table went silent, Luz watched them all look at one another very awkwardly. Caleb finally decided to speak up. “Luz, Lilith’s room is the infirmary now. Where anyone who’s fallen down goes. Paul is being an idiot and teasing Adam about falling down before him.” Luz gulped. “And pretty much everyone else is dead.”
“Oh.” Luz said, her mouth dry. “I’m sorry.” Was all she could choke out. Why was she such a idiot? How come she didn’t put the pieces together. “Is it okay if I go upstairs and shoo Paul away from Adam?” Caleb nodded. “Alright. I’ll be back.” Luz got up and left for Lilith’s room.
The door was open when she got there. Luz stepped inside and scanned for Adam and Paul. However she only saw Adam. Other than him, the room was vacant. “Hey Adam.” Luz smiled. “I came here to scare away Paul, but I guess you did that on your own.”
“Ha, hey Luz. It’s been a minute since we’ve last seen each other.” Adam replied. “Come, sit.” He patted the side of his bed. Luz sat where he patted.
“How are you? Wait sorry that was a stupid question.” Luz physically face palmed. “How are you holding up?”
“Pretty good.” Adam responded. “I mean for the situation at least. I feel super tired though.” There was a beat of silence. “It’s weird, feeling yourself die. I can feel my body slowly shutting down. Soon I’ll be unable to speak, eat, or move.”
“I couldn’t imagine how hard that must be. How awful it must be to go through this. To experience it.” Luz sighed. “I’m so sorry that this happened.”
“It wasn’t your fault, so don’t start acting like it was.” Adam smiled weakly and lightly punched Luz. “Not that I’m mad at that other kid. The one who brought us back. It was an interesting experience. I didn’t entirely hate it! What grade did Gus get on his project?”
“An A+ and a suspension.” Luz laughed. “So I guess it was worth it in a way?” Adam laughed at that. “I haven’t actually really talked to him in a few days. I heard he and Matt are kinda together or something, so they’re probably hanging out.”
“Good for him.” Adam replied. “Can you tell him that I’m not mad at him anymore?”
Luz nodded, “Yeah, of course.”
“Thank you.” Adam smiled and then sighed. “Can I tell you something?” Luz shook her head up and down. “I wasn’t the hero everyone thought I was.”
“What are you talking about?” Luz asked, raising an eyebrow.
“I could’ve saved everyone, but I let a girl get the best of me. I could’ve saved so many more people, but instead I decided to fall in love.” Luz tried to say something but was cut off. “I shouldn’t have been so mean to Paul. He has genuinely been so helpful during these last rough couple of days.”
“Really? I thought he was pure evil!” Luz was shocked. She recounted every interaction she had with him–which wasn’t many–but couldn’t think of a single time where he was genuinely nice. Or maybe she had just misread him.
“He’s evil, but not pure evil.” Adam chuckled. “Luz, you should go get Eda for me.” Adam said, looking a lot more purple, like the blood wasn’t able to circulate through his body anymore. Luz gave him a nod and ran down stairs, to find Eda.
“Edaaa! Adam needs you!” Luz called out to Eda–who was seated on the couch. She got up and quickly ran up the stairs, but told Luz not to follow her. “But!”
“No buts! You stay down here. You hear me?” Eda shouted.
“Yes, Eda.” Luz frowned and kicked the floor. “Whatever.” Luz mumbled to herself and folded her arms. She went back into the kitchen, but decided not to join back in on the conversation. Instead she headed for the backdoor and into the backyard.
There were two graves near the cliff. One was labeled Jeremy and one was labeled Morgan. She stared at them for a minute and then made her way up the cliff, via the trail that was on the side. It took her a good couple of minutes to reach the top, but she was able to. There was another grave there, labeled John. Then a little bit to the left was another labeled Todd.
“Luz?” A familiar voice called out to her. It was Lilith! “Luz! What are you doing out here?” Lilith questioned. She sounded extremely concerned and a bit angry.
“Just exploring.” Luz replied.
“Oh well. Maybe you shouldn’t be up here.” Lilith frowned. Her hand on Luz’s shoulder. There was dirt on her skirt.
“Were you digging graves?” Luz questioned, noticing a shovel that had been tossed on the ground. Plus the empty graves behind her.
“No, I was burying John.” Lilith replied. “Raine finally got Darius to leave, thank Titan. I was worried he’d never go.” Lilith pauses, noticing something in the distance. “Is that Eda and Adam?” She questions. “Oh crap.” Lilith sighs, before letting go of Luz and running down the hill.
Luz stood at the top of the cliff, no clue on what was happening. She doesn’t move, stuck in place. The girl watches the adults talk. Adam is stagnate, lifeless. She knows he’s dead, who wouldn’t. The body is limp, and the way Eda is holding him implies that he’s heavier than normal. Meaning he’s just dead weight, or dead. His limbs dangle, clearly his muscles have stopped working.
There’s a strange curiosity that emerges from this. A lifeless body must feel different from an alive one. There has to be differences to alert people of this change. If people don’t know, there’s nothing to stop them from assuming someone is simply asleep. The same thing could be said about sleep.
—
Caleb, Paul, and Ronald are all chatting. Well Paul and Caleb are chatting while Ronald listens, as he cannot add much to the conversation. Kevin is asleep, at least to everyone’s knowledge. They do not care to check up on him.
“What if one of us falls down? What if we both fall down and there is no one left to take care of Kevin and Ronald.” Caleb furrows his brow and rubs his temples with his middle finger and thumb. His fingers brush up against his greasy eyebrows.
“And William.” Paul adds. Caleb subconsciously grows uneasy at the mention of William. The conscious mind doesn’t know why this wave of anxiety washes over him. But his gut warns him of impending doom.
“Where is William? I have not seen him since sunrise.” Caleb questions, looking out the window at the setting sun. The sky is a swirl of orange and yellow. A little bit of pink and purple is mixed in but it’s small and almost goes unnoticed to the naked eye. It’s something Caleb mourned during his time stuck in the pit.
“Hm, dunno.” Paul shrugged. “I’m sure he’s fine. I mean, I doubt he’s fallen down, if that’s what you’re worried about.” The reassurance falls on empty ears.
“No, it is not that.” Replies Caleb, in a distance tone. His eyes still fixed on the scenery outside, the beauty that nature brings in times of discomfort. It reminds him of those horror cartoons for kids that would incorporate some form of comedy to help elevate the full on horror elements without turning it into complete garbage shows. “I do not know why I feel so troubled. I just feel as though something bad has happened to him. Something so familiar yet so estranged?” Caleb let out a tired sigh. “You must perceive me as some sort of lunatic.”
“Just a little.” Paul laughed, however Adam did not return the favor. “Hey, chin up. William is more than capable of taking care of himself. I’m sure he’s alright. Plus, he couldn’t have gone far. I’d bet ya that he’s somewhere in the house right as we speak.”
“Maybe.” Caleb finally looked at Paul. “Shall we go search for him?” Caleb didn’t wait for a response. He was going to look for William, whether Paul would join him or not.
But against Caleb’s previous judgement, Paul got up, “Yes, we shall.” The word, ‘shall’, was very much a mocking against Caleb, still Caleb gave Paul a smile. It was all in light fun. Something that Caleb hadn’t experienced in quite a while.
Paul and Caleb don’t get far, however. Eda jumps out from behind a corner and almost kills Paul and Caleb via a heart attack. The two scream, and then Paul laughs while Caleb catches his breath. “I have bad news. Really bad news. Disturbing too.” Eda begins.
“The topic is William? Is it not?” Caleb butts in. Paul shivers, but does not add to the conversation in any meaningful way. “What happened? Tell me what happened this instant!” Caleb demands, swinging his finger around, threatening to poke Eda in the eye.
“William died, and not from the sickness that’s been killing off the rest of the house.” Eda finally admitted. Her voice was timid and her words, careful.
“Did someone kill William!?” Paul screamed, and then proceeded to grab his mouth. A wave of shock and confusion washed over him as he tried to put it together.
“William killed William.” Caleb corrected. “That must have been the cause of my previous anxiety. I knew there was something disturbing. I felt it in my gut.”
“Yeah a gut feeling, dumbass.” Paul teased. Though it was hard to tell if it was teasing or genuine bullying from his tone of voice.
“Is that not what I just said, Paul?” Caleb sassed back. “Jeez, listen next time.” Sarcasm was uncommon for Caleb, yet he felt it was appropriate for the situation.
“I’ve already buried him.” Eda’s cold voice cut through the playful tones of the two young adults. “So, no need to fret.” It was like she was trying to laugh with them, but it just made for an uncomfortable atmosphere.
Caleb cleared his throat and choked out an awkward “Thank you.” Paul nodded along with his words. Eda quickly stumbles out of the room. “So it is just me, you, Kevin and Ronald.”
“Speaking of Kevin, he’s been sleeping for quite a while hasn’t he?” Remarks Paul. “Should we go check up on him? Just to make sure, of course.”
“Wow, I never thought I would live to see the day that you care for another person. Not just care but fret over that person’s well being!” Caleb teases. Paul scoffs in response but doesn’t deny the comment.
The two head back into the kitchen. Ronald had fallen asleep, his head resting in his hands, slight drool pooling on the table. Kevin on the other hand was no longer resting on the table, his whole body fell over. It now lays on the floor, like he had a seizure and died. “Is that foam?” Paul asks, as he walks towards the body.
“Is he?” Caleb questions. The two don’t say anything for a while. Both were stunned by this event. “How long was he…” Caleb doesn’t dare finish his question.
Paul places a hand on Caleb’s shoulder, like he had done once before. “We have to bury him.” Caleb nods, and wipes his eyes.
The body is cold. Kevin has been dead for hours. Nobody noticed, they never notice anything.
