Listen to your Heart
Summary
“Where is she?” Callie yelled as she ran into the Idaho ER, a panicked look on her face“Arizona? Arizona??”It had been about 12 hours since she had gotten the call. The call that the plane had been found. The call that Meredith, Derek, Christina, and Arizona were all being airlifted to the hospital. The call that Mark and Lexi hadn’t survived.——My take on the plane crash and how it brings Arizona and Callie closer together instead of driving them apart

Chapter 4

A few days later Arizona's had her first therapy appointment. It was on zoom and in the nearly 30 minutes since it started Arizona had yet to say more than a sentence at a time.

“It is okay if you don’t want to talk right now Dr. Robbins, I’m more than happy to take this at your pace” her therapist, Dr. Laing, said

“Nothing personal, this is just pointless” Arizona replied

“Why do you say that?” Dr Laing replied

“You won’t understand, nobody can” the blonde responded, clearly ready for this appointment to be over

“So you feel like you have no one you can talk to? What about your wife?”

“She wasn’t there, she doesn’t know what we went through” Arizona replied

“Have you tried telling her about what you went through? or how your feeling with all these major changes in your life?”

Arizonas silence served as its own answer

“What about Dr. yang or gray or shepherd?” the therapist continued before Arizona quickly cut him off

“They all came back with four limbs”

“I see- that must be hard, being the only one with a permanent physical reminder of what you went through” he said

“So your conclusion is that losing a leg is hard??” the blonde said somewhat sarcastically

“My conclusion, Dr. Robbins, is that losing a leg is much harder when you don’t have people around you who love and want to help you. But it sounds like you do. So don’t take it for granted”

Arizona didn’t say anything for a few moments, just taking in what he said

“I think that’s our time, but I’ll see you next week okay?”

Arizona nodded before closing her laptop and throwing it on the bed, wheeling herself to Sofia’s room to go hold her daughter

“Look who I found” Callie said opening the front door later that night. Sofia was down for the night and Callie had gone to pick up arizonas parents from the airport

“Arizona” her mother breathed running over to her daughter and leaning down to hug her, Arizona in her wheelchair

“Hi mom” Arizona said, not realizing how good it would feel to be able to hug her mother again

“There’s my girl” the colonel said walking in quickly dropping the bags in his hand and going to the other side of Arizonas wheelchair to join the family hug, tears threatening to flow from all parties

“Hi dad” she said leaning into his shoulder, again not realizing how much she had missed her father
“I’m glad you’re here”

“We wouldn’t be anywhere else” her mom said
“We were so worried about you” her mom said

They stayed like that for the next few minutes, neither parent wanting to let go of their daughter, grateful they were not grieving the loss of their daughter like they had the loss of their son.

“I’m okay” Arizona said softly, and for the first time she started to believe it

The next day Arizona was at the hospital waiting for her appointment when she saw Alex walk by the window in her room

“Karev” she yelled causing the man to stop walking and go stand in the doorway of her room, not daring to go in any further
“Hey”

“Hi” Alex said, not sure where this conversation was going

“How are my patients?” She asked

“They’re fine” he said
“I was able to send the Johnson kid home yesterday and Patrick’s mom turned out to be a match for his kidney so we’ve scheduled that transplant for tomorrow morning”

“Good, thank you for looking after things, thank you for staying to look after things” she said with a deep breath

“It’s no problem” he said

“I’m sorry” she said quickly
“I was jealous of the opportunity you got and mad that you were considering leaving Seattle when I should have just been proud of how far you’ve come. I was wrong and I’m sorry”

“It’s okay. I shouldn’t have let you get on the-“

“Alex don’t. We can’t start playing the what if game okay?”

He nodded

“And to make it up to you I was supposed to assist on a coronary revascularization next week but.. it’s yours if you want it”

“Really?” Alex said, his eyes lighting up

“Yeah, just don’t fuck it up” she said

“I won’t. Thanks Robbins” Alex said

“No problem, now get out of here Karev” she said

Alex just nodded, a smile on his face, and ran off back to work
