Anbu 4 - THoughts

I am writing another version of this chapter, so this might not be the one I stick with, I just need some advice for it

This took a lot longer than usual, so please help me improve my writing if you can

As they sat down, Naruto was lost in thought, thinking about his kill and how his first mission has gone. Inu let out a sigh and nodded to everyone. "Job well done," he said. "Let's head back to the base and report the missions."

"You did good out there," Snake said, patting Naruto on the back, turning to leave with the hostage back to Konoha, "It's not easy, but it's necessary."

Naruto's solemn nod concealed a storm of emotions, as he avoided meeting Snake's compassionate gaze directly. The weight of his haunting memories from that fateful kill remained firmly entrenched within his consciousness, refusing to loosen its grip. Each time he dared to close his eyes, the chilling echoes of the blade slicing through flesh reverberated through the very depths of his soul, leaving an indelible mark that seemed to have claimed permanent residence in his mind.

Guilt, an oppressive force, consumed him entirely. It gnawed at his spirit, relentless and unyielding, for he had taken a life, even in the desperate confines of self-defense. The lingering feeling that he had transgressed some fundamental moral boundary tormented him relentlessly. His thoughts spiraled into a maelstrom of self-doubt, questioning if he could have explored other avenues, less definitive and more compassionate. Like a constrictor coiling around its prey, guilt ensnared his soul, tightening its grip with every passing moment.

Remorse, a profound and all-encompassing emotion, inundated Naruto's mind like a deluge. He yearned for the ability to rewind time, to undo the irreversible, to eradicate the painful past. In the labyrinth of his thoughts, he replayed the scene repeatedly, searching for an alternate path, a hidden escape route that would alleviate the weight of regret. The visage of his fallen adversary, eyes wide with disbelief and fear, haunted him like a ghostly apparition. Waves of remorse crashed upon the shores of his consciousness, engulfing him in an ocean of tears and sorrow.

Yet, interwoven with the depths of his guilt and remorse, a peculiar sense of pride arose, elusive and disconcerting. It whispered seductively, asserting that his actions were borne out of strength, bravery, and prowess. It sowed seeds of doubt, suggesting that he had persevered where others might have faltered, exhibiting unwavering resolve amidst danger. This confounding pride wove an intricate tapestry of conflicting emotions within Naruto, casting shadows upon his sense of self and leaving him grappling with the enigma of his own identity.

Caught in the throes of conflicting emotions, Naruto felt as though invisible forces were tugging at his very being, pulling him towards two divergent paths in life: that of the pacifist and that of the cold-blooded murderer. Unbeknownst to him, he was unwittingly making a choice, subconsciously aligning himself with one of these paths, which would inevitably reveal itself in due time. The illumination cast upon these contrasting routes seemed to convey that they were the only viable options available to him, leaving him unaware of the multitude of hidden paths obscured by the cloak of darkness.

Naruto found himself adrift amidst the tumultuous sea of his thoughts and emotions. Would he ever become acclimated to the ceaseless inner conflict that rent his being, or would it eternally devour him, tearing apart the fabric of his existence? These questions, like persistent echoes, resonated within him as he pressed on along his arduous journey, bearing the burden of his past and harbouring uncertainty for what lay ahead.

Continuing on their journey, Naruto followed his team, his steps mirroring the path that led them back to their home, Konoha. The somber reality of the shinobi life slowly unveiled itself, casting a shadow over his thoughts until he found solitude. But for now, he pushed those contemplations deep down, burying them beneath the urgency of the mission at hand. His focus shifted to the task, recognizing that their mission was not yet complete, as the hostage had not been safely returned to Konoha. As he observed his team, he couldn't help but notice their stoic demeanor, their emotions seemingly locked away, a chilling reminder of the daily occurrences of taking lives in their line of work.

Approaching the gates of Konoha, the team proceeded directly to the Hokage's tower, as per the requested protocol before their departure. While the mission itself had presented its own challenges for Naruto, it wasn't in the traditional sense of difficulty, where victory hinged solely on overpowering the opponent. Instead, it was the weight of his first experience as a killer that had proven to be the true challenge. He attempted to shake the haunting thoughts from his mind, but their grip remained unyielding, refusing to release their hold on his conscience.

Inside the confines of the Hokage's chamber, the team stood before Hiruzen, the Anbu commander by his side. As they began to relay their account of the mission, Snake took charge instead of inu due to having the greater role in rescuing the hostage, reciting the details while not hesitating to mention Naruto's pivotal role in taking a life. The room fell into an expectant silence, awaiting the Hokage's response.

"You are all dismissed, except Naruto," Hiruzen's calm voice resonated throughout the chamber. Though he maintained a composed demeanour, a slight trace of concern flickered within him. The Hokage understood the gravity of Naruto's situation. While most, if not all, Anbu had encountered the harsh realities of death before, Naruto was still a child. The weight of killing at such a tender age, with a mind still in the process of development, was far from ideal.

Naruto's curiosity mingled with a hint of trepidation as he questioned, "Do you wish to speak with me, jiji?" Deep down, he already knew the topic of their impending conversation, but he remained open, ready to face the discussion that would inevitably shed light on his inner turmoil.

Hiruzen regarded Naruto with a mixture of paternal concern and wisdom, his gaze conveying both compassion and understanding. He motioned for Naruto to take a seat, offering a moment of respite within the tranquil confines of his office.

"Naruto," Hiruzen began, his voice gentle yet laden with a sense of gravity. "I want you to know that what you experienced out there, the emotions you're grappling with, they are not uncommon for someone who has taken a life, especially at such a young age. The weight of such an act can burden even the strongest of hearts."

Naruto listened intently, his eyes fixated on Hiruzen, his heart yearning for guidance and solace amidst the turbulent sea of his emotions.

"The path of a shinobi is a treacherous one, fraught with difficult choices and sacrifices," Hiruzen continued, his voice tinged with empathy. "But it's crucial to remember that these choices do not define who you are as a person. They are tests of character, opportunities to shape your own destiny."

Naruto nodded, absorbing Hiruzen's words like a parched desert absorbs rain, each drop offering a semblance of nourishment to his weary soul.

"You possess an incredible strength, Naruto," Hiruzen emphasized, his gaze unwavering. "Not just physical strength, but strength of spirit and resilience. It is within this strength that you will find the answers you seek, the path that aligns with your true self."

Naruto's brows furrowed, a mixture of determination and uncertainty etching itself onto his features. "But how, Hokage-sama? How do I find that path?"

Hiruzen's eyes softened, a glimmer of admiration shining through. "It begins with understanding yourself, Naruto. Embrace your emotions, acknowledge the turmoil within you. Only by facing your inner demons can you transcend them."

Naruto pondered these words, realizing that he couldn't ignore or suppress the conflicting emotions that had plagued him since that pivotal moment. He needed to confront them head-on, for it was through introspection that he would unearth the true nature of his own heart.

"Furthermore," Hiruzen continued, "remember that you are not alone in this journey. Lean on your comrades, seek guidance from those who have walked similar paths. They can offer invaluable insights and support as you navigate the complexities of your emotions."

Naruto's eyes flickered with newfound determination. He realized that he had a network of allies, friends who understood the struggles and challenges of the shinobi life. They could serve as beacons of light in the darkness, guiding him towards a path that embraced both his compassion and strength.

"Jiji," Naruto said, his voice laced with gratitude, "thanks. I'll try." For once, he was quiet.

Hiruzen smiled warmly, his expression filled with hope. "I have faith in you, Naruto. Remember, the choices you make today shape the shinobi you will become tomorrow. Embrace the lessons from your experiences, and let your heart guide you."

As Naruto rose from his seat, a newfound determination burned within him. He exited the Hokage's office with a sense of purpose, ready to confront the duality within him and forge a path that transcended the limited choices before him. The road ahead would not be easy, but Naruto had taken the first step towards understanding himself, and with that, he knew he had the strength to navigate the intricacies of his own destiny. To have greater inner peace, he would start with talking to his fellow ANBU later during the week.
