Chapter 13: The Flower of the Uzumaki Clan
Two months after Naruto's birth
The dimly lit, secured chamber, nestled deep within a hidden location outside of Konoha, was tense with anticipation. Chakra-infused seals lined the walls, glowing softly as they hummed with power. ANBU guards, alongside the Uzumaki clan's elite shinobi, maintained their vigilance, their eyes scanning every inch of the room and its surroundings. This was no ordinary delivery—this was the birth of a Jinchuriki's child.
Kushina Uzumaki writhed on the birthing table, beads of sweat rolling down her face as she strained against the overwhelming pain. Her fiery red hair, damp and tangled, framed her contorted expression of agony. Yet despite her exhaustion, there was determination in her eyes.
"Just a little more, Kushina!" Biwako Sarutobi urged, her voice a steady anchor amidst the turmoil. "You're almost there! Keep pushing!"
Beside the bed, Akimitsu Senju's hands were spread wide, a steady stream of chakra coursing from his palms into the wooden pillars surrounding the chamber. His Wood Release, though not as powerful as his grandfather Hashirama's, was a crucial addition to the layered protection around his wife. The interlocking branches weaved into a protective cocoon, keeping the Nine-Tails' influence at bay while providing support for the birthing process.
"Kushina, hang in there!" Akimitsu called out, his voice strained with effort as he reinforced the Wood Release barrier. "You've got this, love! Mito's almost here!"
Minato Namikaze, the Fourth Hokage and a trusted friend of both Akimitsu and Kushina, knelt beside the bed, his own chakra working in tandem with Akimitsu's. The golden glow of the sealing array around his hands shimmered as he focused on keeping the Nine-Tails' chakra sealed tightly within Kushina. His face was a mask of concentration, but his eyes flickered with concern for the woman he still held dear, despite their complicated history.
"Stay strong, Kushina," Minato murmured softly, his gaze locked on her. "You're doing amazing."
Kushina's body tensed, her muscles straining as she drew in a shuddering breath. "M-Mito… please… come out and meet your mommy and daddy!" she cried, her voice breaking under the weight of her pain and desperation.
A few agonizing moments later, a high-pitched wail filled the room.
"She's here!" Biwako announced, her voice bright with relief and joy. She lifted the tiny, wriggling infant, her hair already a brilliant shade of red, a testament to her Uzumaki heritage.
Akimitsu moved to reach for his daughter, his heart swelling with love and pride, but Biwako's hand shot out, delivering a sharp slap to his knuckles.
"What is it with you men thinking you get to hold the baby first?" she scolded, her tone playful but firm. "Mothers first!"
Akimitsu chuckled softly, withdrawing his hand as he watched Biwako carefully place the squirming baby into Kushina's waiting arms.
Kushina's breath hitched as she looked down at her newborn daughter, her gaze softening with a mixture of awe and wonder. "Oh, Mito…" she whispered, tears welling up in her eyes. "My beautiful little Mito…"
The baby's cries quieted as she blinked up at her mother, her eyes wide and alert. Unlike the deep blue typically seen in newborns, Mito's eyes were a striking shade of golden honey—a rare, captivating color that seemed to glow with warmth.
Akimitsu leaned closer, his own eyes filled with reverence. "She has your hair, Kushina… and my eyes," he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. He reached out slowly, this time with Biwako's permission, to gently brush a finger against Mito's tiny hand. "She's perfect."
Kushina let out a watery laugh, cradling Mito closer. "Yes… she really is."
"Congratulations," he said quietly, offering a sincere smile. "You two are going to be amazing parents."
Akimitsu nodded gratefully, his gaze never leaving his daughter's face. "Thank you, Minato. And thank you for being here. It means a lot."
Minato simply nodded in return, his thoughts drifting back to the past, to the choices that had led them all here.
Flashback
The low murmur of voices and clinking glasses filled the cozy, dimly lit bar. The usual buzz of patrons had faded to a dull background noise as Kushina downed another shot, her face flushed with a mix of alcohol and emotion.
"You know, we're just… *idiots," she slurred, a slightly lopsided grin stretching across her lips as she glanced at the man sitting beside her. "All this… love stuff… it's stupid."
Akimitsu laughed, his own cheeks tinged pink from the alcohol coursing through his system. "Yeah, maybe it is," he agreed, his voice softer than usual. "But… it's worth it, isn't it?"
Kushina huffed, propping her chin in her hand. "Easy for you to say… you're, like, the *perfect* guy. Strong, smart, handsome…" She waved her hand vaguely. "Everything. And what am I? Just a loudmouthed girl who's been chasing after a guy who'll never love her the way she wants."
Akimitsu's smile faltered, something wistful flickering in his eyes. "Kushina…"
She looked at him then, really looked at him, and something shifted in the air between them. Maybe it was the alcohol, or maybe it was the loneliness, but suddenly, it didn't seem like such a terrible idea to lean in closer, to close the distance between them.
And so she did.
The night dissolved into a blur of heat and whispered words, and when the morning sun finally crept through the curtains, Kushina awoke to the undeniable reality of what had happened.
Present
Kushina's gaze lingered on her newborn daughter's face, her heart aching with a bittersweet mixture of love and guilt. Mito's golden eyes, so unlike her own or Akimitsu's, stared back at her with an innocence that made Kushina's chest tighten.
"Welcome to the world, Mito Uzumaki," she whispered, pressing a kiss to her daughter's forehead. "Mommy will always protect you… no matter what."
Outside the chamber, Akimitsu leaned against the wall, his gaze distant. He could still see the shadows of the past, the consequences of their actions. But as he looked at the child he had helped bring into the world.
The tranquil stillness of the hidden birthing chamber shattered like glass under a sledgehammer.
One moment, the atmosphere was thick with the contentment of new parents admiring their child. The next, an oppressive, malevolent presence filled the room, making the very air vibrate with danger.
Before anyone could react, a dark figure materialized in the center of the chamber—a man cloaked in a swirling red and black mask, his single, menacing Sharingan eye visible through the hole in the center. He moved with blinding speed, striking before any of them could register his presence.
Minato barely had time to look up before a crushing fist collided with his chest. The force of the blow sent him flying backward, crashing through one of the thick stone walls. The impact reverberated through the entire chamber, shaking its very foundations.
"Minato!" Akimitsu shouted, his eyes widening in shock as he watched his friend disappear into the rubble. He turned back to the masked intruder, his expression hardening. Chakra flared violently around him as he summoned his Wood Release, thick vines and branches erupting from the ground to ensnare the intruder.
But the masked man was faster.
With a flick of his wrist, the man conjured a shimmering kunai, which sliced through the wood tendrils like they were nothing more than paper. In the next instant, he surged forward, closing the distance between himself and Akimitsu in a blur of motion.
Akimitsu braced himself, raising his arms defensively as the man reached for Kushina, who was still holding the baby. But then—
"No!" Akimitsu yelled as the masked man's hand shot out, gripping Mito's tiny form with a brutal, unyielding strength.
Kushina screamed, her voice filled with sheer terror and desperation. "Let go of my baby!"
Ignoring her, the man yanked Mito free from Kushina's grasp and hurled the infant with chilling precision—directly over Akimitsu's head.
Time seemed to slow as Akimitsu turned, his heart seizing in his chest. He reached out with a speed that surprised even himself, his wood chakra flaring violently as thick roots burst from the ground, cushioning his arms as he caught the baby.
"Got you!" Akimitsu gasped, relief flooding his senses as he cradled Mito protectively against his chest.
But just as quickly as relief came, it vanished.
He spun around, his eyes blazing with fury. "You'll pay for that!" he roared, but his voice echoed through an empty space.
The masked man was gone. So was Kushina.
Akimitsu's heart pounded wildly in his chest. He scanned the room frantically, his senses searching for even the slightest trace of the man's chakra signature. Nothing. It was as if he'd vanished into thin air.
"Damn it!" Akimitsu cursed, his mind racing. He turned to Biwako, who stood paralyzed with shock. "Stay here and protect Mito. I have to find them before—"
A sudden surge of dark chakra washed over him, making his breath hitch. His head snapped toward the east, where he could sense a powerful, malevolent energy thrumming through the air.
"No…" he whispered, horror dawning on his face.
The Nine-Tails.
With Mito safely secured in a cocoon of wood tendrils, Biwako nodded numbly, clutching the child close as she whispered soothing words to keep the infant calm. Akimitsu glanced at her one last time, a fierce determination blazing in his golden eyes.
"I'll bring her back, Biwako. I promise," he swore, and then he was gone, a blur of motion as he raced out of the chamber and into the night.
The forest whipped past him in a blur of shadows and moonlight as Akimitsu's mind raced. He pushed himself faster, drawing on reserves of chakra he hadn't known he possessed. Every fiber of his being screamed for him to find Kushina—to stop whatever nightmare the masked man had planned.
That chakra surge… it couldn't be…!
He knew the Nine-Tails was sealed within Kushina, and he had seen the strain she endured just to keep the fox contained while giving birth. If that seal broke… if the masked man managed to unleash the beast…
A sharp pain lanced through his chest at the thought. He pushed it aside, focusing on the task at hand.
Minutes felt like hours as he followed the faint trail of disrupted chakra through the woods. And then, suddenly, the path opened up, revealing a small clearing bathed in eerie moonlight.
Kushina was there, bound to a stone pillar, her body slack and her chakra dangerously low.
"Kushina!" Akimitsu shouted, skidding to a halt beside her. He reached out, his hands trembling as he carefully checked her condition. She was alive—barely—but her chakra reserves were nearly depleted.
He could see the remnants of the seal that had once contained the Nine-Tails—a shattered array of intricate symbols that now lay in ruin.
"Oh no…" he whispered, his gaze drifting toward the masked man who stood several feet away.
The intruder was calm, almost relaxed, as he placed a single hand against Kushina's abdomen. A twisted smile curled beneath the mask as he began to speak softly, his words laced with malice and power.
"Now then, let's see how much destruction we can unleash, shall we?" the man murmured, his Sharingan spinning hypnotically.
Akimitsu didn't wait. He launched himself forward, his hand flying through a rapid sequence of hand signs.
"Wood Release: Great Binding Forest!"
Thick, sturdy branches erupted from the ground, twisting and curling toward the masked man with terrifying speed. But the man simply glanced at Akimitsu, his Sharingan flashing once.
A surge of malevolent chakra burst forth from Kushina's body, tearing through the wooden branches like a tidal wave.
The ground beneath them trembled violently as the air crackled with raw power. The seal shattered completely, and from the darkness of the broken array, a monstrous roar reverberated through the clearing.
Akimitsu stumbled back, his eyes wide with horror as the Nine-Tails materialized, its massive form towering above them. The fox's crimson eyes, filled with a fury that knew no bounds, locked onto the small human forms below.
"No… no, no, no!" Akimitsu chanted desperately, his gaze darting to the masked man, who merely laughed—a cold, cruel sound that sent chills down Akimitsu's spine.
"This is only the beginning," the masked man whispered, his voice carrying a promise of death and destruction.
With a single gesture, the man directed the Nine-Tails forward.
"Destroy Konoha."
The fox lunged, its massive claws tearing through the earth as it charged toward the village.
Akimitsu watched, helpless, as chaos erupted around him. The Nine-Tails roared again, its voice echoing through the night like a harbinger of doom.
And in that moment, he realized…
The nightmare had only just begun.
The once tranquil night was now lit by the blinding fires of destruction as the Nine-Tails rampaged through Konoha. The beast's massive paws flattened entire blocks with each step, its tails swinging through buildings like a hot knife through butter. Screams filled the air, mingling with the roar of the Nine-Tails and the desperate shouts of shinobi trying to contain the chaos.
Standing atop one of the crumbling rooftops, Minato Namikaze's gaze was sharp, focused. The orange glow of the flames reflected in his piercing blue eyes as he scanned the battlefield below. His heart clenched at the devastation his village was suffering, but he pushed the pain aside. There was no time to lament.
He needed to stop this madness.
In a flash of yellow light, Minato teleported to the center of the battlefield, landing gracefully on a nearby rooftop. He caught sight of Akimitsu Senju standing on the ground below, his Wood Release branching out to try and contain the Nine-Tails' destructive advance.
"Akimitsu!" Minato called down, his voice carrying over the chaos.
Akimitsu's head jerked up, his face streaked with sweat and blood. "Minato! The Nine-Tails—he's out of control! That man—he broke the seal!"
Minato's jaw clenched, his gaze hardening. "I'll handle the Nine-Tails. You keep the villagers safe."
Akimitsu nodded, his features tight with concentration as he sent another wave of wood tendrils to bind the fox's legs. "Be careful, Minato! That masked man is still out there!"
No sooner had the words left Akimitsu's mouth than a cold, mocking voice echoed through the air.
"Worried about your precious Hokage, Senju?"
Minato spun around, his eyes narrowing as a swirling vortex of dark chakra appeared several meters away. From its depths, a man in a swirling black and red mask stepped out, his Sharingan glowing ominously in the darkness.
"So you've finally come to face me, Minato Namikaze," the masked man said, his voice dripping with malice. "I've been waiting for this."
Minato's stance shifted, his muscles tensing as he prepared for the inevitable confrontation. "Who are you?" he demanded, his voice steady despite the adrenaline pumping through his veins. "Are you Madara Uchiha?"
The masked man's lips curved into a smile beneath the mask. "Madara? Perhaps. Or perhaps not. Does it matter, Fourth Hokage? The only thing that matters is that tonight, you and your village will fall."
Minato's eyes narrowed further, but he didn't let the man's cryptic answer distract him. "We'll see about that," he said quietly, and in the next instant, he vanished.
The masked man barely had time to react before Minato's kunai sliced through the air, aimed directly at his neck. But instead of making contact, the blade passed harmlessly through his form as if he were made of mist.
"You can't touch me, Hokage," the masked man taunted, his Sharingan spinning faster as he turned to face Minato.
Minato landed a few feet away, his gaze steady as he assessed his opponent's abilities. "So, you can phase through attacks… an interesting trick," he murmured thoughtfully. "But every technique has a weakness."
"Too bad you won't live long enough to find it," the masked man sneered, his voice dripping with confidence.
And then they were both in motion.
Minato's body flickered in and out of existence as he teleported across the battlefield, his speed nearly impossible to follow. The masked man matched his pace, weaving through Minato's attacks with ease, his form flickering like a ghost. They moved like blurs, clashing and separating, each testing the other's limits.
The masked man's Sharingan followed Minato's every move, but Minato's sharp mind quickly analyzed the timing of his phasing technique. There was a pattern—a slight delay between when the man solidified and when he phased out.
"I've got you now," Minato whispered to himself.
In a flash of yellow light, he disappeared again, reappearing directly behind the masked man. This time, he didn't aim to attack directly. Instead, his hand shot out, a glowing seal forming on his fingertips.
"Contract Seal!"
Before the masked man could react, Minato's fingers brushed against his back, and the seal pulsed with power. The masked man's eyes widened in shock as he felt the connection between himself and the Nine-Tails shatter like glass.
"What?!" the man snarled, staggering forward as the backlash of the broken contract rippled through his chakra network. "How—?"
Minato didn't let him finish. In a blur of motion, he hurled a kunai at the masked man's feet and teleported instantly. His form materialized beside the man, and with a swift motion, Minato's hand clamped down on the man's shoulder, his chakra flaring brightly.
"Rasengan!"
The spiraling sphere of chakra exploded against the masked man's back, sending him crashing into the ground with a thunderous impact. Dust and debris flew into the air, obscuring Minato's view.
But he didn't let his guard down.
His gaze remained locked on the spot where the man had landed, his senses straining for any sign of movement. Slowly, the dust settled, revealing the masked man crouched on one knee, his mask cracked but still intact.
"Well done, Hokage," the man grunted, his voice laced with grudging respect. "You truly live up to your reputation."
Minato's eyes narrowed, his stance unwavering. "Who are you?" he demanded again.
The man chuckled softly, straightening as he adjusted his mask. "It doesn't matter. What matters is that I've accomplished what I came here for."
With a swirling motion, the man's body began to dissolve into a vortex of dark chakra. Minato tensed, ready to pursue, but the man raised a hand in warning.
"Don't bother, Hokage. We'll meet again—soon. But for now, you should focus on your village… and your family."
With those ominous words, the masked man vanished, leaving Minato alone in the clearing, his heart pounding in his chest.
Minato didn't waste a second. He spun on his heel and teleported back to the village, his mind racing. He'd succeeded in breaking the masked man's contract with the Nine-Tails, but the beast was still loose—still rampaging through Konoha.
He had to stop it. Now.
He appeared on a rooftop overlooking the main square, where the Nine-Tails was unleashing its fury on the gathered shinobi. Akimitsu's Wood Release held the beast back, but it was clear that the Senju was struggling.
"Akimitsu!" Minato called out, his voice cutting through the chaos.
Akimitsu's head snapped up, and relief flickered in his eyes as he caught sight of Minato. "Minato! Did you—?"
"I broke the contract," Minato confirmed, his gaze shifting to the massive fox. "But we need to get it away from the village."
Akimitsu nodded, his hands forming a series of rapid seals. "Right. I'll hold it down—you take it from here."
Minato's heart pounded as he watched Akimitsu's Wood Release surge forward, wrapping around the Nine-Tails' massive limbs. With a roar of defiance, the fox struggled against its restraints, its chakra flaring wildly.
Minato took a deep breath, steeling himself.
This was it.
In a flash of yellow light, he appeared beside the Nine-Tails, his hands glowing with sealing chakra. With a fierce shout, he activated the Flying Thunder God Technique, teleporting both himself and the colossal beast to a clearing outside the village.
As the Nine-Tails landed with a resounding crash, Minato knew what he had to do.
There was only one way to stop this. One way to protect the village… and his family and friends.
The clearing outside the village was a scene of utter chaos, the ground torn and shattered from the Nine-Tails' thrashing. Trees lay uprooted, debris scattered everywhere, and a suffocating pressure filled the air as the beast's chakra crackled menacingly.
Kushina was on her knees, her red hair matted to her sweat-soaked face. She strained with everything she had, her chakra chains glowing brightly as they struggled to keep the massive fox pinned down. Blood dripped from her lips, her body trembling violently from the sheer effort of holding the Nine-Tails at bay.
"I can't… I can't hold it much longer," she choked out, her voice raw with pain.
"Kushina!" Minato shouted, his heart breaking as he looked at his wife. "You have to hang on!"
Tears mixed with the dirt on her cheeks as Kushina's head turned slightly, her eyes locking onto Minato's. "Seal it back into me, Minato," she pleaded, her voice barely more than a whisper. "Please… I'll take it with me."
Minato's throat tightened, his own tears threatening to spill over. "I'm sorry… I can't do that, Kushina," he murmured, shaking his head. "If I seal it back into you… Konoha will be left defenseless. The fox will re-emerge, and we'll be back at square one."
Kushina's face twisted with pain—both physical and emotional—as she felt the weight of his words settle over her. She knew he was right. The village couldn't withstand another attack like this. Not without someone to contain the beast.
"But… what about our children?" she asked, her voice breaking.
Minato took a deep, shaky breath. "I'll seal it into Naruto," he said softly.
"No!" Kushina screamed, her eyes widening in horror. "He's just a baby, Minato! He can't handle the Nine-Tails—he doesn't have the Uzumaki chakra to withstand it! It'll kill him!"
Her desperate words hung in the air, and for a moment, it seemed like time itself had frozen. But then, in a blur of motion, Akimitsu Senju appeared beside them, his arm wrapped in makeshift bandages, soaked with blood. His usually calm demeanor was shattered, his face twisted with rage and desperation.
"What the hell is going on?" he demanded, his voice hoarse as he looked between his wife and his rival.
"Kushina's life force is almost gone," Minato said quickly, his eyes darting back to the Nine-Tails, which was straining against Kushina's chains. "We're out of time. I'm going to seal the fox into your daughter, Mito."
Akimitsu's eyes widened, disbelief and anger flashing across his face. "What?!" he roared. "No! You can't seal that thing inside my daughter!"
But before he could react further, the Nine-Tails let out an ear-piercing roar, its crimson eyes blazing with murderous fury as it fought against the restraints. The chakra chains binding it began to crack and splinter, and the beast's massive claws scraped against the ground, inching closer and closer to the struggling couple.
"Damn it!" Akimitsu cursed, turning to his wife. "Kushina—!"
"Use your Wood Style!" Kushina shouted, her voice strained and desperate. "Hold the furry bastard in place while Minato finishes the seal!"
Gritting his teeth, Akimitsu nodded. He slammed his hands together, his chakra flaring wildly as he summoned one of his most powerful jutsus.
"Wood Style: Wooden Dragon Jutsu!"
Two massive wooden dragons erupted from the ground, their scales gleaming as they coiled around the Nine-Tails. The beast snarled and thrashed, but the dragons tightened their grip, constricting its movements.
"Hurry, Minato!" Akimitsu yelled, his voice strained from the effort of holding the technique.
Minato's hands flew through a rapid sequence of seals, his expression grim. He took a deep breath, steeling himself as he summoned the most dangerous jutsu in his arsenal.
"Reaper Death Seal!"
The air grew heavy and cold as a dark, ominous figure materialized behind Minato—a spectral form with empty, hollow eyes and a massive blade clutched in its skeletal hand. The Shinigami's presence sent a shiver down everyone's spine, even as they struggled to keep their focus on the task at hand.
Minato glanced at Akimitsu, his face set with determination. "Tell Hiruzen… there are three notes in the Hokage's drawer," he said quietly, his voice steady despite the impending doom looming over him. "Make sure they're passed out… after this is done."
Akimitsu's jaw clenched, but he nodded. "Don't talk like you're saying goodbye, Minato," he muttered fiercely. "We're going to get through this."
But Minato's smile was sad, almost wistful. He turned back to the Shinigami, his heart heavy with the weight of his decision.
"Seal the Nine-Tails," he ordered softly.
The Shinigami's blade glinted in the moonlight as it sliced through the air. In an instant, the massive form of the Nine-Tails began to break apart, its chakra being drawn toward the infant in Minato's arms—Mito Uzumaki-Senju.
The beast roared, its body writhing in agony as it was pulled into the tiny vessel, its once-monstrous form shrinking and dissipating until nothing remained but a faint, glowing seal on Mito's small stomach.
The light of the seal faded, and the clearing fell silent.
Minato staggered backward, his breath coming in ragged gasps. He could feel his life force slipping away, the price for summoning the Shinigami and using its power to seal the Nine-Tails.
But he had done it. He had saved the village… and his family.
Kushina's trembling hand reached out for her daughter, her vision blurring as tears streamed down her cheeks. "Mito… my sweet Mito," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Please… grow up strong. I'm sorry I won't be there for you…"
Akimitsu's heart clenched painfully as he knelt beside his wife, his one remaining arm wrapping around her shoulders as he pulled her close. "Kushina… stay with us. Please…"
But she shook her head weakly, her gaze drifting up to meet Minato's. "Thank you… Minato… for everything," she murmured, her voice full of love and gratitude.
Minato swallowed hard, his own tears falling freely. "You're welcome Kushina," he took a breath, "Thank you for being my best friend," he whispered.
Their eyes met one last time, and then…
Kushina's body went limp, her chakra chains dissolving into the air as the last remnants of her life force faded away.
"Kushina!" Akimitsu cried out, his voice breaking as he clutched her lifeless form against his chest.
Minato's knees buckled, and he collapsed to the ground, his vision dimming. He could feel the Shinigami's cold hand wrapping around his soul, pulling him closer to the abyss.
But as he looked at the tiny form of Mito in Akimitsu's arms, he couldn't help but smile. Akane, Naruto... his final thoughts.
Minato Namikaze—the Fourth Hokage—closed his eyes, his body falling still as the Shinigami claimed its price.
The clearing fell silent once more, the only sound the soft cries of a newborn baby cradled in the arms of a broken man.
The moon hung low in the sky, casting a soft, sorrowful glow over the devastated clearing. The night was still, as if even the winds dared not disrupt the mournful silence that had fallen over the battlefield. The fires caused by the Nine-Tails' rampage were beginning to die down, leaving behind the charred remains of what was once a peaceful village.
Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage, arrived at the scene with a contingent of ANBU and medical personnel. His old eyes widened in horror as they took in the sight before them—Akimitsu Senju kneeling on the ground, his shoulders shaking with sobs as he clutched a tiny, crying infant to his chest. Nearby, the lifeless bodies of Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki lay motionless, their faces eerily serene despite the violence that had just transpired.
Hiruzen's heart clenched painfully in his chest. He took a deep breath, forcing himself to stay composed as he slowly approached Akimitsu. The cries of the baby girl in Akimitsu's arms tore at his soul, each wail a reminder of the heavy price they had paid this night.
"Akimitsu…" Hiruzen murmured softly, his voice strained with grief. He placed a gentle hand on the Senju's shoulder, feeling the tremors of the man's anguish beneath his fingers. "What happened?"
Akimitsu looked up, his tear-filled golden eyes meeting Hiruzen's. His face was pale, his expression a mix of sorrow, guilt, and exhaustion. He swallowed hard, his voice breaking as he spoke.
"Minato… he fought the masked man alone," Akimitsu rasped, his words choked with emotion. "He defeated him, but it wasn't enough. We couldn't… we couldn't stop the Nine-Tails without sealing it away. Kushina… she didn't have the strength left to hold it any longer."
Hiruzen listened silently, his gaze drifting to the bodies of Minato and Kushina. He felt his throat tighten as he saw the sealing formula etched onto the small form of Mito Uzumaki-Senju. A part of him had hoped, desperately, that it wouldn't come to this. But deep down, he knew Minato had made the only choice he could.
"Minato sealed the Nine-Tails into Mito," Akimitsu continued, his voice barely more than a whisper. "But… he used the Reaper Death Seal. He… he gave his life… to protect the village. And Kushina… she… she couldn't hold on…"
Hiruzen closed his eyes, his heart aching with each word. Minato's sacrifice, Kushina's sacrifice… all for the sake of the village and for the future of Akimitsu Senju and Kushina Uzumaki's daughter. He let out a shaky breath, opening his eyes to look down at the tiny child in Akimitsu's arms. Mito's cries had quieted, her little face scrunched up in confusion and distress as she sensed the overwhelming emotions around her.
For a long moment, Akimitsu didn't respond. He stared down at Mito, his fingers trembling as he traced a gentle line along her tiny cheek. The baby cooed softly, her wide golden eyes peering up at him with an innocent curiosity that seemed to pierce through the fog of his grief.
"I'm sorry, Kushina… I'm so sorry," Akimitsu whispered brokenly, tears spilling down his cheeks.
Slowly, reluctantly, he loosened his grip on Mito, allowing Hiruzen to take the infant into his arms. Hiruzen cradled the baby girl gently, his heart aching as he looked down at her small, delicate face. Mito's cries had quieted to soft whimpers, and she instinctively nestled closer to Hiruzen's warmth.
"Thank you, Akimitsu," Hiruzen said quietly, his gaze meeting the Senju's tear-filled eyes. "You've done everything you could. Now… it's time to rest."
Akimitsu's shoulders sagged, the weight of his loss and exhaustion finally bearing down on him. He let out a shuddering breath, his gaze drifting back to the still forms of Minato and Kushina.
"I need… time," he murmured, his voice barely audible. "Time to… process everything. I can't… I can't be a father right now. I can't…"
Hiruzen nodded slowly, understanding the pain in Akimitsu's words. He shifted Mito slightly, his gaze softening as he looked down at the baby.
"I'll take care of her," Hiruzen promised gently. "For as long as you need."
Akimitsu's lips trembled, and he swallowed hard before nodding. "Thank you, Hiruzen-sama," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "Thank you…"
With a final, lingering glance at Mito, Akimitsu turned and slowly walked away, his steps heavy and unsteady. The weight of his grief and guilt bore down on him, each step feeling like an insurmountable effort. As he disappeared into the shadows, Hiruzen watched him go, his heart aching for the broken man.
When Akimitsu was finally out of sight, Hiruzen looked down at the tiny bundle in his arms, his expression softening as he gently brushed a finger along Mito's cheek.
"I'm sorry, little one," he murmured, his voice filled with sorrow. "You've lost so much tonight… but I promise you, I'll do everything in my power to keep you safe."
Mito's small hand reached out, grasping his finger with surprising strength. Hiruzen felt a bittersweet smile tug at his lips as he looked down at the girl who carried the legacy of both the Uzumaki and Senju clans.
"We'll get through this," he whispered softly. "Together."
And with that, the Third Hokage turned and began the long walk back to the village, carrying the precious burden of hope and sorrow in his arms.
An emotional chapter for sure. Anyways, a lot of you are going to be wondering about how exactly Akimitsu and Kushina got married. Well long story short, after realzing she was pregnant and the history of their fake relationship, and with the possibility of being judged for having a child out of wedlock, Kushina marries Akimitsu.
