Pearl was glad to see Gem doing better day after day, until she was allowed to leave the hospital. She had asked Gem about why she was running and she only said she didn’t remember, only that she had to run.
Pearl thought that was weird but who can she judge! Gem was staying at his house for now, he cleaned up the house just to make sure everything was set. She’d never admit the mess that her house was before, even if she's known as the cleaning lady.
Gem was currently sitting at the couch patiently waiting, while Pearl made her some soup. She isn’t exactly sure how to take care of someone who seems to know nothing about their past life due to a concussion but she’s trying her best!
Pearl had found that Gem had quite the bubbly personality, something she enjoyed about her. Gem had the spirit of a fighter and Pearl couldn’t help but admire that. He couldn’t wait to get to hang out with her more-
“FUCK OW”
Pearl shrieks, she should really pay more attention to her knife when cutting up the vegetables.
“You okay?” Gem calls over from the living room, peaking over the counters from the couch.
“Yeah, I’m fine! Just cut myself on accident” Pearl calls back as she grabs a bandage and puts it over the small cut on her finger.
He sighs and goes back to cutting the veggies and tosses them into the pot, stirring it around a bit and adding some seasonings before pouring it into two bowls and grabbing spoons aswell.
Pearl walks over to sets his soup down on the coffee before handing Gem hers.
Gem takes the soup and spoon, scooping some up, gently blowing on it to cool it down and taking a sip, her eyes lighting up as she begins to take spoonfuls of soup.
Pearl giggles and picks up her soup and taking a small sip herself “My cooking really that good?” She asks with a smirk
Gem nods, shoving a final spoonful into her mouth, “Best soup I've ever had!”
Pearl chuckles, shaking his head slightly “What if you’ve had better soup in the past and you don't remember! You did get a pretty nasty concussion.”
Gem hums, setting her soup down on the coffee table stretching a bit “I can't remember why I was even in a forest! And a good amount of stuff before that, I barely remember you finding me out there.”
Pearl pauses for a second before speaking, “What do you remember about your life?”
Gem hums and sits there for awhile before responding
“Not much honestly… Everything is kinda blurry, I feel like every memory is from a different person, it's so weird.” Gem grumbles fiddling with the strings of the jacket Pearl had given her.
“Yeah… That’s strange “ Pearl mutters in response, looking down at her now empty bowl of soup before grabbing Gems bowl and setting both of them in the sink.
“Do you wanna watch something?” He asks Gem, hoping to lighten up the mood as he sits down next to her.
“Hm…Sure, that sounds nice” Gem mutters as she curls up in her blanket directing her eyes to the TV as Pearl grabs the remote and opens netflix to watch some random show, after a bit of looking they settled on watching some show called Arcane.
________________________________________________________________
Gem didn’t want to admit it but Pearl's name felt familiar, like she’d said it a thousand times over. Like she said it everyday for years on end, like she’d said it with hate, sadness, love, every possible emotion. She can’t explain it.
She can’t bring herself to focus on the show, it looked interesting but she’s trying to fill these holes in her memories trying to learn why Pearl's name was so familiar.
These places she’s felt like she’s been but she couldn’t have right? Medieval castles don’t exist at the same time as bustling cities.
Being referred to as a princess of a kingdom, that doesn’t happen at the same time as fishing at a dock in the shambles of a town.
She’s so lost! There's no way she's all these people, her concussion is just messing with her! She's being tricked by her own head, it's probably just mixing with stories she’s read.
She looks over to Pearl again, she feels like she’s seen her before so many times as well, a red cloak that hides the blood that covers the torn fabric, a green dress hand sewn covered with sunflowers with wings of gold.
But that can’t be Pearl. Pearls right in front of her, some… Girl? Guy? Gem doesn’t know…That found her bleeding and sobbing on the side of the highway, not some pretty girl with wings.
Gem watches as Pearl turns off the TV and says something about heading to bed, Gem automates her way through the conversion way too deep in her thoughts…
Until she’s alone.
The darkness enveloping her. That's when Gem gets up off the couch, grabbing the crutches next to the couch and heads to the bathroom.
She looks in the mirror, her thoughts shift through all those people she saw in her memories, the ones labeled as her. Before finally just going to the bathroom.
She doesn’t look in the mirror as she leaves.
She doesn’t need to.
She’s the same.
Maybe her ears just feel a bit more pointed.
