The Attack

Kakashi was pushed further to the edge with their newly acquired Sanbi scroll and with the weight of keeping his friend safe on his mind. He shut his sharingan eye, intent on conserving chakra.

They move fast through the territory they had crossed on the way into the Land of Mist. Water droplets cascade down, it seemed like they were on the edge of a torrential downpour. Kakashi hated this place. It was time to go home.

Kakashi tries to focus on the task at hand and get his mind off the weight of the Sanbi in his pocket. If only he could destroy the scroll or throw it at the bottom of the ocean. Away from anyone else. Never to be seen again or destroy another life.

Guy leap upwards and Kakashi twists in midair, seeing a Mist Ninja come out from the woods. His own kunai raises up and parries the thrown kunai. He throws a couple of ninja stars and makes the split-second decision to go on the offensive. He didn’t want to go on the defensive too quickly and give them the chance to get more backup coming. He raises his headband, opening his sharingan. The tomoe spin around and Kakashi swallows down the sudden memory assaulting his memory of Obito giving him the sharingan.

“You both will regret the day that you crossed the Mist Village! I’m Kenji, and I will be the last face you see!” Kakashi forces himself into the present and sees that Kenji currently only had one other ninja with him. Two versus two, they could hand.

He rushes forward and Guy does the same, throwing a kick from behind the silent ninja, “Leaf Hurricane!” The enemy ninja uses taijutsu to counter and Kakashi grins behind his mask. When their legs collided, there was a terrible cracking sound and a cut-off scream. Unless you push chakra into an appendage, you’re likely to break a bone by engaging in taijutsu with Might Gai.

Kakashi hears a ninja star whiz through the air. He steps to the left and it cuts his right cheek open. He gasps with the pain in his cheek, his mask ripping a bit. If he hadn’t moved when he did, his face would have been cut open. That was practically a genin-level move, Bakashi! Get it together! Obito’s voice goes through his mind.

A second ninja, the one from earlier that Kakashi used genjutsu on. His comrade must have roused him. Hopefully he didn’t get the chance to wake the other two. Kakashi and Guy square off against their own opponents. Guy’s opponent was doing his best to survive the intense kick that certainly fractured his leg bone. Kakashi uses an earth jutsu to make a wall, forcing his opponent into close combat.

Kakashi pulls out his tanto blade and presses forward. “Water wolf jutsu!” His opponent cries out, making signs. Kakashi copies him seamlessly, hands curling around his tanto to do so.

The enemy ninja cries out, “Copy Ninja-“ No! The wolves made of water slam into each other and dissipate into clouds of steam. Kakashi darts forward between them without remorse, stabbing his opponent in the neck without hesitation. Their identities could not be allowed to escape, or they could cause another flurry of battles that turn into war and turn into more dead comrades.

He hears a cry of Guy’s enemy, enraged at his own comrade being killed. Kakashi’s eye sees the man make a flurry of signs.

Guy sees the ninjutsu and goes for another Leaf Hurricane, aiming for the head. Kenji grasped Guy’s leg violently and pulled him towards him. Kakashi could hear the crack of finger bones from stopping Guy’s leg with just his hand.

Kakashi temporarily abandons his tanto in the neck of his dead enemy, pinning his body into the mud wall. Those signs are…?! The blow is going to hit Guy point blank. Fire nature?

Kakashi’s stomach drops, and he doesn’t have time to think, he goes on pure instinct, making his own signs. He needed to get across their battlefield. Now. Tortoise. Hare. Please, let me make it in time. “Lightning step!” He shouts desperately. At the same time, the enemy shouts, “Fire dragon!”

Kakashi could see it all in slow motion as his jutsu takes effect. The flames lick up and creating the beginning of a dragon’s face, its eyes yellow. Guy was trying to pull his leg free, Kenji grinning wide as he pushed his own chakra into his broken fingers to hold Guy steady. Kenji screaming, “Die!”

Steam was mixing with the mist in the air because of the sheer amount of moisture in this environment. Electricity was coming from Kakashi’s legs and zapping more than any of his training exercises had had, the electric currents traveling up the water and extending the radius of his attack. Electricity spread further than it had on the training field, the moisture in the air making it travel further than it should. No time to think.

He runs forward and outstretches his arms. Please, let me make it in time. Kakashi sees the flames just starting to impact his rival’s arms as he brought them up to protect his face. One of Kakashi’s hands latch onto Guy’s leg and the other punches Kenji’s hand. Electricity affects the people in the radius, making their posture become rigid. Kakashi brings up his leg and slams it into Guy’s chest, making sure to push enough chakra to send him flying.

They make eye contact for one fleeting moment. Guy’s eyes were wild with surprise and then rage as he realized- Kakashi didn’t get to read much more of the expression as he sent his friend flying into the trees.

Kakashi ran out of time as his Lightning Step jutsu side effect wore off the instant Guy went flying from his kick. The dragon erupted, flaming yellow eyes were so bright, they reminded Kakashi of the coals he saw in the fire from last night. Searing paint erupts in his right leg, and he collapses.

Guy slams into a tree, hitting it with an oomph! He sees stars, a couple of his ribs cracking on impact as the air is forcefully expelled out of his lungs. He falls, catching his breath. Guy whips his head up. At least it was safer than getting hit with a dragon made of fire. “Kashi! Kak… Kakashi!” Guy scrabbles up to his feet and looks at his enemies.

Kenji stands where Guy last saw him. Kakashi was crumpled up on the ground, flames still burning his leg. Guy, like Kakashi, doesn’t think when he sees the situation. He acts. He appears as Kakashi’s defeated opponent, seizing the tanto with two hands. A sword was never Guy’s weapon of choice, but he had to end it, fast.

Guy appears there in an instant as Renji crumples to the ground, tanto slammed into his chest. The man had lightning marks on his face, Guy realizes that he was a dead man walking, already gone from this world. The lightning jutsu effects must have spread all the way to his brain thankfully, stopping the fire jutsu from entirely enveloping Kakashi’s body.

He swivels to his friend. Guy puts his hands over the flames on Kakashi’s leg, quickly patting out the flames. He cups water from a puddle, putting it out rapidly. His hands touch charred flesh, and he recoils. Kakashi’s thigh was black and red, burned badly. Guy’s stomach turns at the smell of burning flesh and he turns away, sickened by the smell. What was a Mist shinobi doing with a fire nature in their back pocket?!

“Kakashi!” Guy grabs his friend’s shoulders, turning his body to look at his face. The pain must have been unbearable for him to lose consciousness so rapidly. Guy grimaces, lifting him up and over his shoulder. He moves fast, gripping the tanto taking off back towards the border.

Maybe Guy could get Kakashi across the border before he wakes up. That would be the ideal spot to do first aid. “If I don’t get you across the border before you wake up, I will do one hundred, no two hundred laps around the village,” he mutters to himself.
