Chapter 32 - Change of Plans

When the Hyūga guards came rushing to inspect the noise and then sound the alarms because their heiress was missing, Sakura decided to dump her crybaby routine and move straight into shock/trauma act. She lets Hinata cling onto her as she stares into the distance with unseeing eyes and trembling limbs

The shivering is easy to do because she purposefully didn’t bring a coat and stopped circulating her chakra for warmth.

The Hyūga guards all step toward the two of them cautiously, obviously having spied Hinata’s hysterics and Sakura’s “traumatized” stare.

Hiashi and Hizashi immediately descend upon the scene, looking like wrathful and vengeful gods, but immediately dim into concerned adults.

When they try to separate the two girls, Sakura and Hinata cling to each other tighter.

Hinata in desperation and Sakura protective. She lets her dull green eyes light up with life and fire as she glares at the adults and snarls. Taking on a threatened and determined stance.

“Sakura-chan…” Hiashi murmurs, crouched low with his hands stretched outward and away from his person, in mock submission. “It’s okay. You and Hinata are safe. You protected each other. We just want to take you inside and get you in some warm clothes.”

Hizashi has also crouched down and looks upon them both with worried eyes.

Sakura makes a show of eyeing them suspiciously, arms still wrapped tight around a sniffling Hinata, before nodding.

“Hi-Hina-chan, let’s go h-home,” Sakura cajoles softly, a similar stutter in place.

The pearl-eyed princess lifts her head up from Sakura’s shoulder, face red, eyes watery. She maintains eye contact with Sakura for a moment before she turns to look at the people surrounding them. Her all-seeing eyes must see that these people are indeed her family, because she loosens her grip on Sakura and holds her hand instead.

“O-okay…” She whispers as she leans on Sakura, pressing their bodies close together.

Seeing that the two girls will not be separated, Hizashi picks them both up. One in his left arm and the other in his right. They never stop holding hands.

Now, Sakura sits in on the couch in the Hokage’s office, clutching Hinata’s hand, trying to and failing to stay awake.

She had waited nearly four hours outside for the Kumo shinobi. Granted, up until he jumped over the compound wall, Sakura had been meditating within the tree. So she is tired. Very tired in fact. But she needs to be vigilant. Because while she hopes none of the adults are stupid or reckless enough to let a Yamanaka in her mind or an Uchiha look through her memories, that doesn’t mean someone won’t try.

So she will struggle to stay awake, waiting for her parents.

Though she dreads the absolute shitshow to follow once they enter the office.
