Chapter 1

In the vast country of England, princess Vertin was getting ready for breakfast, the smell of fresh bread and the most expensive tea filling her nostrills while she fixed for the last time her dress before coming out of her bedroom, the servants and maids greeting her with a big smile as always.

Her mother and her father, also known as the Queen and the king were on the table waiting for her, looking as graceful as always.

While eating, Vertin looked at her mother, she knew once she died she would take the position as the Queen, but she doesn't even have a man in mind to marry when she becomes the Queen yet, she knows that she's only 16 but by the time she's 18 she knows people will want to see the possible future king.

She just shaked her head, trying to push those toughts away, but they still lingered at the back of her mind.

When she was walking through the hallways of the castle, she saw a picture she tought she couldn't see ever again, she careful grabbed it like it was the most special thing in the world to her.

"Who is this boy?" She asked to the servant who was besides her, this was a picture of when she was younger, a taller boy besides her, his skin white as snow, his long creamy-white hair and his beautiful as gems blue eyes.

"You don't remember? He used to be your best friend, Matthieu Bouanich, you two were really close, but he had to go, he had to start working on the mines, he's the kid of two of our workers." The servant answered with a gentle tone.

Her eyes lit up for a second before putting the photo back in place. "You said he works in the mines, right?" She asked, yet her tone seemed more hopeful now.

"Yes-" The servant couldn't even finish talking when Vertin was already rushing to the door. "Wait, he's not a he anymo-!" The servant just sighed as he heard the door closing.

Without looking back, the princess got into a carousel, ordering the driver to get her to the mines as soon as possible, she was hoping "he" would be there.

When they got there it was already sunset, but Vertin couldn't care less, she rushed into the mines, despite her dress getting dirty with dust.

She peeked inside the mine, it had lightning inside for the workers, yet she didn't see anyone, she could just shrug with dissapointment, but before she could turn around she saw someone, a girl inside the mine, she looked exactly like Vertin's friend, so the princess tought it must be his sister.

"Bonjour." The girl said, bowing with respect for the princess.

"H-hello, do you know Matthieu Bouanich? I heard he works here." Vertin stuttered out, fiddling with one of the buttons on her dress.

The miner's expression turned troubled and a bit scared, but with a soft nod she softly answered. "I-... That's me, but my name's Matilda now..."

Vertin's eyes widened before she let out a soft giggle, thinking it was a joke, but when she saw the serious look on the girl's face, she knew it wasn't.

"Matthieu- I mean, Matilda? You-you're transgender?" Vertin looked confused yet at the same time intrigued.

Matilda nodded before getting closer to Vertin, she was obviously taller, yet looked really femenine, no one would realize she's trans at first glance.

Vertin tried her best not to blush, she shouldn't be blushing at the sight of a girl, it's not proper! Yet, her heart betrayed her.

Matilda sat down on a chair and waited for Vertin to sit on the one besides her, still being unable to look at Vertin in the eyes.

The princess sat down besides the Miner, trying her best not to make Matilda feel even more uncomfortable.

"Why did you come here? I tought you forgot about me." Matilda finally looked at Vertin's eyes, over her expression was written sadness and a bit of anger.

"I saw the photo that they took of us when we were little, i remembered years ago when we used to be inseparable, and i miss it..." Vertin clutched the hem of her dress, hoping Matilda couldn't realize it was a lie, she came here for a husband after all.

"I tought you didn't have time anymore, princess..." Matilda said with obvious sarcasm, her voice dripping with contained remorse.

"The night sky looks beautiful, doesn't it?" Vertin tried her best to make up to Matilda by trying to have a more calm talk.

"Yeah." Matilda's eyes gleamed with the soft light of the moon, making them look even more beautiful to Vertin, the princess didn't even try to hide her blush this time, she was too mesmerized.

Vertin snapped out of her toughts when she realized she had to get back to the palace, getting up quickly and cleaning her dress with soft pats.

"I-i have to go, sorry, take care!" Vertin said hurriedly, already rushing to the carousel, looking over her shoulder to see Matilda waving goodbye.

When Vertin got to the palace, she changed into her night garmets and laid down on the bed, Matilda couldn't get out of her toughts now and anytime soon, but for now she could only sigh and hope she could see the miner again.
