Chapter Three

"How was the women's prison my love?" Trixie let out a long sigh,

"Well it was something that's for sure." Cora let out a bark of a laugh,

"What about you, how was Nottingham?"
Cora shrugged with a small sigh, before chuckling lightly as a thought entered her mind,

"It was alright, and Evelyn's further along than she thought, now that was something I decided not to tell our parents."

Trixie smiled, nudging Cora slightly, "Well they were clearly enjoying themselves during the wedding planning."

Cora chuckled, wrapping her arms around Trixie, "That they were, my darling that they were."

"Have you thought about it? What our life be like if you were a man?" Cora shrugged,

"Well not really but what I do know for certain is that if I were a man, you'd have a ring on that finger, and be in the family way with at least our second." Trixie sighed not deterred by Cora's words,

"We'd have such gorgeous babies." Cora smiled,

"Of course we would, we'd have two daughters already named, Alexandra and Farah." Trixie's brows furrowed hummed in agreement,

"You are very much a girl dad in that respect, and another on the way because I could never keep my hands off of you." Cora smirked wolfishly,

"Of course, I couldn't imagine anything else."

When Alec had his accident Cora wasn't much further up the road doing a house call of her own, a police officer escorting her in the correct direction, leading her to the accident site.

"I've sent for Dr King, she's more of a trauma specialist than I am, and she'll bring what she can to save his leg."

When Cora did arrive she was panicked at the sight she encountered and rushed as she found the group of men, handing Dr Turner a splint from her bag as well as more gauze.

"Dr King, I'm glad you're here,"
Cora grunted as she grabbed the splint handing it to Doctor Turner, "We need to get this splint on if we are to save his leg, let alone the foot, and put these against his head, I'm worried about a potential brain injury more than anything."

Patrick nodded, rushing to do as Cora said as she removed her tie securing it to his arm, suspecting that it was fractured with its lack of mobility.

The ambulance couldn't arrive quick enough for them to take Alec to the hospital, Cora making her way to Nonnaus house.

"Doctor King? What Heaven is the matter?" Cora was keeled over panting,

"It's Alec, there was an accident, he's been taken to hospital." Jenny and Cynthia rushed to the hospital while Trixie brought Cora inside making her a cup of tea, her arms wrapped around her, before leading her to a chair.

"Whiskey?" Cora shook her hands clutching the fine china,

"I can't because if I start I won't stop, and people need me." Trixie nodded slowly sitting next to her clutching her hand,

"What's going through your mind, Kingy?" Cora let out a long breath,

"I've seen so much, Trixie, so much, but Alec and his injuries reminded me so much of my time during the war, the injuries, the blood, the pain, and I couldn't help him, all I could do was keep him alive until the ambulance arrived." Trixie nodded, drawing closer to Cora.

"You did what you were trained to do, and that's all anyone can ask of you, all you can ask of yourself."

And when Alec died they were in that same position except it was at Cora's house and Trixie had her arms wrapped around her.

"I keep thinking about what more I could have done, what else I should've done." Trixie shook her head with volition,

"No, don't you even think about blaming yourself for this, you did all that you could." Cora nodded into her chest.

The funeral itself was of course a somber affair, Cora sat next to the choir with Trixie before she rose to sing. But all she could think about was the daunting reality of life and its fragile nature.

"Trixie, I think we need to talk about our funerals." Trixie shook her head, folding some of Cora's laundry.

"No, I spent 4 years thinking about it, we don't need to keep talking about it." Cora sighed approaching Trixie leaning against the archway.

"Trixie we need to talk about it, if Alec's death has taught me anything it's that life is too short and I want things in order, for when I do go." Trixie huffed wiping the tears from her eyes,

"Alright fine, what is it that you want to say, that I don't get anything because we can't ever be together legally and I'll be known as the best friend while weeping at your funeral, assuming I don't go first that is." Cora shook her head edging closer to Trixie,

"Everything of mine will become yours, you are my beneficiary and all money from my bank accounts goes to you, the house is yours and my pension yours too, and the moment the laws allow it I will have a ring on that finger of yours." Trixie's brows furrowed cautiously,

"And how have you managed that?" Cora smiled slightly,

"Well when you have Princess Margaret standing next to you as you demand it, it's hard for them to deny you anything. And Trixie I have to go first, because I cannot live in a world in which you don't exist. It's not possible." Trixie shook her head walking toward Cora, her face buried into her chest.

"In which case we'll have to go together because I cannot live without you either." Cora smiled nodding,

"Of course, but I'll go a minute or two before you so that I can wait for you on the other side, wherever that may be." Trixie scoffed,

"You always have to do things first." Cora let out a huff but held onto Trixie regardless, because she knew that unlike Jenny if she lost Trixie she wouldn't be able to make it through, Trixie was her achilles heel.
