Prologue
Doctor Cora King, General Practitioner of Poplar, qualified Doctor, Nurse and Midwife.
She wandered the streets of Poplar before, making her way inside Nonnatus House, a place that had served as her home from the moment she qualified as a midwife, after her Army Service, until she went away to study as a Doctor.
It had been just over a year when she finally returned with the title of Doctor, what she hadn't wanted nor expected was to walk inside of Nonnatus House, to be met with a crying Trixie, and Cynthia and an unknown Nurse comforting her as she cried.
"Trixie? What in the heavens has happened?" Trixie's eyes widened as she heard an all too familiar voice, one that she'd longed to hear for over a year, the voice behind the letter and postcards.
"Oh Cora." Cora caught her as she practically tumbled into her arms, strong arms holding her up and comforting her in the safety of her chest.
Jenny glanced over at Cynthia confused, "Who's that?" Cynthia smiled slightly, at the sight of the pair.
"That's Cora, she was a nurse here for a while, until she went away to train as a Doctor, she and Trixie were always very close."
Meanwhile Cora looked down at Trixie, her brows furrowed with concern, "What’s happened, love?"
Cynthia looked over at Cora frowning, "I'm sure she'll tell you in the morning. But not right now."
Cora nodded, lifting Trixie into her arms, "I think we should get you to bed, shan't we."
Trixie nodded into Cora's shoulder revelling in the warmth of her arms.
"It's good to see you sister, I must admit I have missed you all." Sister Julienne smiled at the newly qualified doctor.
"As we have missed you Doctor King. Are you sure you're quite alright living on your own, we have a room for you here at Nonnatus." Trixie smiled widely,
"Yes you could share with me." Cora let out a small chuckle with a wide smile,
"Perhaps I'll spend a night or two while on call but I can assure you I shall be quite alright otherwise."
They all nodded, conceding to her wishes, as Sister Evangelina spoke, "And when can we expect you around the district Doctor?"
Cora smiled, a small comfort coming in the form of Sister Evangelina's voice.
"I must go back to Edinburgh for a couple of weeks, where I will be given my degree, and then home to see the family and attend Evelyn's wedding and then I can officially accept Dr Turner's invitation to Practice with him, here in Poplar." There was a squeal before Trixie launched herself into Cora's arm and the celebration commenced.
"You will come back soon won't you, I won't be without you for another year and a half?" Cora smiled at Trixie as she leant against the door of her car,
"We've been apart for longer before when I joined the Army Trixie, a long four years without one another, and then we managed another year, in sure we can manage a few months." Trixie scoffed drawing closer to the Doctor,
"I have spent exactly 5 years 8 months and 13 days apart from you in the 16 years since we first met Doctor King, and once you're back I don't plan on letting you go anywhere out of sight for at least another 16." Cora smiled wrapping her arms around Trixie,
"You know you could come with me to the wedding as my plus one, you know how much my family loves you." Trixie let out a small sigh as she fixed Cora's tie,
"If only I could, but I'm needed here." Cora nodded in understanding,
"Well then, you'll have to book a space in your diary for Anne's wedding. I've heard her fella will be proposing soon." Trixie smirked letting out a little giggle,
"Well I shall see if I can fit you into my very busy diary." Cora nodded sending Trixie one last longing glance before getting into her car,
"I love you Trixie." The Nurse nodded,
"I love you too Cora."
