A Bullet That Never Came

The first thing Caitlyn saw as she got up was the pure white stones of Piltover's streets. As her vison began to clear, she tried to get up, only to collapse back down on the floor again. Where was she? What had happened? The bomb had failed to work, and that person, she couldn't tell who, had knocked her out. She looked around and saw that Steb and the others had been captured, their hands on their heads in surrender. Her heart sank, at the realization.

They had been captured.

They had failed.

If they didn't escape, then they would die.

That's when she saw her, the wolf of Noxus, and her former mentor walking up the steps. And she knew that it was over. She would die, the best she could do was hope it'd be quick. Chances of escape were slim.

She looked behind her, expecting to see your average Noxian soldier.

Instead she saw the tip of a rifle, her rifle, no less. Holding it was-

Maddie?

What?

Maddie was a traitor? How- When? Why? Caitlyn felt like an idiot. She hadn't cared for Maddie the same way she cared about Vi, but she still slept with her. She still let herself get tricked.

Idiot. Idiot. Idiot. Idiot.

She watched, with anger in her eyes as the traitor saluted the General. Ambessa took her gun and dismantled it. She felt furious at seeing her gun be dismantled like that. She felt furious at Maddie and Ambessa, and herself most of all.

"I warned you of the hazards of proffesional entanglement." Ambessa said as she threw her gun aside. Caitlyn's rage was building up. If she could use that to her advantage.

Caitlyn grabbed the gun and hit Maddie right in the face with.

You idiot, you slept with her.

She pointed it at Ambessa.

You let her manipulate you.

Ambessa acted almost immediatley, throwing the rifle away and stabbing her in the gut.

"Desperation is the doorway to oblivion, child."

Caitlyn wanted to remind her that she wasn't a child, but the words never came out. She gasped in pain and fell to the ground, her trembling hands tracing the knife in her side.

"Don't take it out, that will only make it worse." She reminded herself.

Ambessa threw the rifle back to Maddie. "Let's get this over with."

She was going to die. She was sure of that now.

"I'm sorry, Vi, my love, I'm sorry for leaving you alone." She thought.

It would be nice to see her mother again. In her final seconds she would make her proud, and hold her head high. She would not give Ambessa the satisfaction.

She thought of Vi, and the mother, and her father, and Jayce, and everyone else who would suffer from her actions.

She thought of what could have been, the life she could have lived, if maybe the circumstances were better.

"In another life." She thought. "But not this one."

She heard the sound of the gun firing, and instinctively flinched for a bullet that never came.
