The car ride to the train is tense and the silence is uncomfortable. When my Hogwarts letter came in the mail my parents were ecstatic. They had thought I was still in my room but really I watched and heard as they celebrated my going to Hogwarts and leaving them for a whole year. I had never seen either of my parents look that happy since I was born. When I questioned if they were sad I was leaving my dad simply slapped me across the face and told me not to stick my ugly nose where it didn't belong. Even a few days later my eyes are still reddish purple and a little puffy.
When we got to the train station my parents find a trolley, dumped my stuff into it and told me to find platform 9 ¾. They didn't bother explaining to me how a platform could be ¾ though so I'm just helplessly looking around hoping to see someone mention Hogwarts at least. All of a sudden a boy my age came up to me asking if I knew how to get to platform 9 ¾. He had raven black hair and the purest green eyes I'd seen.
“I'm so happy I'm not the only one aimlessly walking around but no sorry I'm just as clueless maybe even more so than you. Do you want to walk together though? There's higher chances if we're both on the lookout for it right?” I absolutely word vomited on this poor boy. God, I'm pathetic.
“Yes please, I'm Harry.” The boy, Harry, holds his hand out to me with a smile on his face. He's pretty when he smiles.
“YN.” I say shaking his hand and feeling my cheeks heat from the contact. He really is quite cute. I look down and we walk together side by side. I have to apologize a few times as my trolley keeps banging into his every few minutes but he just waves me off with a smile.
“Come on now Ron, no reason to be scared. You've been dreaming about going to Hogwarts for years now.” a red headed lady a few feet in front of us says. It seems Harry heard her too because we both make eye contact before walking their way. When we are almost there he asks me to ask them about 9 ¾.
“What, no! You ask.” I reply, there's no way you could just go up to somebody and ask them something, what if they ignore you. Or worse, laugh at you!
Harry just shrugs and goes up asking her about it and introducing the two of us to her, she happily explains how to get to the train to Hogwarts.
“My boy Ron, it's his first year too, Ronald! Come say hi to Harry and Y/n here.” She shouts at her youngest son who comes begrudgingly. His hair is bright orange and he's covered in little brown spots all over his nose and cheeks.
“Hello, I'm Ron, Ron Weasley.” he says with his outstretched hand in Harry's direction.
“Harry, and this is YN.” Harry explains gesturing to me.
Ron puts his extended hand in front of me with a big smile on his face, showing perfectly straight white teeth.
“Nice to meet you Ron.” I say feeling a wide smile creep up on my face, Rons smile must be infectious.
“Hurry, hurry now. You don't want to be late and miss the train now do you?” Rons mom calls over to us. We watch as Rons’ older brothers run in first. The twins, Fred and George, are funny and confuse their mom by pretending to be each other.
“Ok, all of you three can go at the same time, if you'd like you can run at the wall. It helps with nerves.” she says reassuringly, patting my shoulder. I really like her.
We all run at the same time and crash into the wall. When I open my eyes a big steam train is in front of us with the words “Hogwarts Express” stamped onto the front of it. We drop off our trolleys and put our stuff away. Harry and Ron walk in front chatting with each other and find a train booth at the back of the train. There's one right across from them with another boy my age sitting alone doodling in a notebook. Afraid I'm unwelcome with Harry and Ron, I slowly walk over to the booth with the boy.
“Hi, do you mind if I sit here please?” I say trying to sound as cheerful as I can. After a minute he finally looks up from his book and makes eye contact with me. His eyes are even prettier than Harry’s. The brown in them almost seems like they're melting and swirling around in his eyes. For a second we both just stare. Eventually he nods and pats the seat next to him as he plops his feet on the other bench and pulls up his hood, but not before I see the dark circles under his eyes that I somehow missed before.
“I can wake you up when we get to the school if you'd like to sleep.” I suggest in a whispered tone to sound more relaxed and honest.
He looks over at me then just for a second but it lights me up completely inside, just at the fact that he's looking at me. Oh my god, keep it together you've known him all of 5 minutes.
“If you're sure,” he pauses and looks at my eyes too. “If you need to sleep too just wake me up, your eyes look tired.” he says almost whispering the end where i barely caught what he said.
“If you're sure.” I reply with a teasing quality.
He smirks before putting his hood on again, then it's completely silent in the car except for his sleeping breaths and the sound of the train tracks beneath us.
