Eternity, Entropy, & Infinity
Rio appeared in the darkness of her void before it faded into brick walls, the fireplace lit, and the 4 rocking chairs she’d known since the beginning of time sat in front of her. The one she used to sit in had now become storage, a place for her siblings to throw stuff they didn’t particularly care about.
That chair had always been for things they didn't care about.
Eternity turned to her, furrowing his brows at the sight of her. “Look who finally decided to show up.”
“What happened to “Welcome back, sis, we missed you!”?“
Entropy rolled his eyes. “Sister.”
The way he said the word made Rio tense.
“We haven’t seen you in forever,” Infinity muttered, lifting her head from the crochet she was working on.
“I’ve been busy.”
Eternity snorted. “What, with that new toy of yours?”
“She’s not my toy!”
“Ooh, she’s mad.” Entropy circled her, the mockery in his tone as clear as the sky. Rio shrank as he got closer. “You have been spending all your time with her, though.”
“So?”
“So, we’re not supposed to talk to mortals.”
“But we’re allowed to.”
Entropy tilted his head. “Something’s different. You seem more… powerful.”
Rio furrowed her brows in confusion.
Eternity got up, joining Entropy. “Why do you keep that mask when you’re here?”
Rio’s hand traced over the flesh stretched over her face. “I— It’s— Why shouldn’t I?”
Entropy scoffed. “You only have it so cowardly humans don’t scream, anyway. Just take it off, relax.”
“I’m good.”
Eternity clicked his tongue. “Death—“
“Rio.”
Her siblings looked at each other before bursting into laughter.
“W—what’s so funny?”
Entropy tried to gather himself. “She— she gave you a—“ He laughed. “She gave you a name, and you kept it?”
“Y–yeah.”
They laughed even harder.
Rio tried to stand her ground, but her legs trembled. “I came to ask a question.”
“What about, your little witch?” Infinity raised her eyebrows.
“What if it were?”
They all laughed, making Rio clench her fists. “Just let me ask my question!”
Eternity wiped off a tear. “Fine, ask your question.”
“Do you know anything about magick that isn’t there to serve a witch?”
Infinity narrowed her eyes. “What do you mean?”
“Like magick that’s there to protect a witch.”
They all paused for a second, thinking.
“Well, I don’t remember that.” Eternity finally broke the silence.
“Then again, anything can happen.” Entropy leaned in. “Not necessarily with a reason.”
Rio blinked. “So…”
“You’re on your own for this one,” Infinity turned to Rio before mocking, “Rio.”
All three of her siblings burst into laughter again, and Rio paused, her gaze softer. “You too, Infinity?”
Eternity and Entropy, she wasn’t surprised by. They had always been dismissive of Rio. But Infinity and Rio… Sure, they had grown apart, but Rio hoped…
She should’ve known.
Infinity stopped laughing, meeting Rio’s obsidian eyes. “Death, I-“
“It’s Rio.” She turned around, slicing her way out of the void. “Nice to see you again, too.”
