Mina is deep in her thoughts that she doesn’t even register Sana sitting down at their usual lunch table in the cafeteria. What finally pulls her out of her thoughts is the sound of Sana’s greeting, “hey Mitang, what’s got you thinking so hard?”
Mina turns to her best friend and lets out a loud breath, “I’m going to say something, but I don’t want you to overreact and cause a scene because I’m already as nervous as it is.”
“I’m offended you think I would easily cause a scene, especially here at work.” Sana pouts and crosses her arms. She looks back at Mina with a raised eyebrow, a condescending but playful look in her eyes, “plus, what makes you think that what you’re about to say will warrant that type of reaction out of me?”
“I’m going to ask Jeongyeon to come home with me for Christmas.” Mina shyly says in almost a whisper. Mina casts her eyes up to look at Sana and all she sees is Sana staring right back at her. Next thing Mina sees is Sana’s eyes widening and a giant smile on her face.
“AHHHHH OH MY GOSH!!!!!” Sana stands up and screams. She starts hopping up and down like a maniac and continues to giggle. In between the giggles and hops, Mina just keeps hearing her say oh my gosh, over and over again.
Mina then looks around, remembering that they are in the hospital cafeteria, and stands up slightly to pull Sana back to her seat. Sana is still giggling but manages to sit back down. “Sana please. Everybody is staring.” Mina offers an apologetic nod to those who were in the proximity of hearing Sana’s cheering.
“OH MY GOSH. I’m sorry, but I have been WAITING for this day to come. You can’t blame me for being so excited.” Sana lets out before another explosion of giggles hits her. “Oh my little Mitang... I know how much this means to you and I’m so happy.” Sana immediately stands up and moves to embrace her best friend. Mina lets out a little chuckle as she reciprocates the hug.

Mina and Sana grew up with each other. Their parents met in college and have all been best friends ever since. It was only right that their daughters would become an inseparable pair. Growing up, everyone automatically assumed that Mina and Sana were sisters. And for the girls themselves, they were. The dynamic that their families had together made it seem as such. The only difference is, they each had their own separate homes. But that didn’t stop the girls from having sleep overs or being at the other’s place all the time. Their parents decided to live in the same neighborhood, so it was literally the easiest thing for the girls. They balanced each other out real well. While Mina was the shy and reserved one, Sana was the bubbly extrovert. They compliment each other real well, and now even more as adults.
One night during their many sleepovers, Mina’s grandmother was telling the girls a bedtime story about how the first person you bring home for Christmas would be the one you spend the rest of your life with. Her grandmother proceeded to share the story of how her and Mina’s grandfather first Christmas was. Then about how Mina’s mom brought her dad. Even Sana’s parents! Mina was so enthralled with the story that around every Christmas time, she would ask for all those stories again. Sana eventually caught on to the fact that Mina was a hopeless romantic with this Christmas story. But not once did she tease her about it. Throughout high school and college when they were dating people, Sana would often joke around asking “so are you going to bring them to our Christmas festivities?” To which Mina would almost always reply with an automatic “no” and “don’t be silly.” Sana knew that Mina was hanging on to the stories they were always told as kids and made a promise to make sure it would happen someday.
Back to the present:
Jeongyeon and Mina met and fell in love after a typical café encounter. Shy girl accidentally spills coffee on a stranger. Shy girl braces herself to get yelled at by a stranger but is only met with a soft voice asking if she’s okay and starts to cautiously look her over to make sure she really is. Once Mina finally finds the courage to look up at the stranger, it’s like her whole world stopped. This stranger is looking at her with such kindness and warmth, that the coffee spilt on her coat and shirt is practically nonexistent. The heat and wetness of it is probably not even being processed because the stranger’s attention is only on her. After Mina replies to let her know that she’s okay, she beings to start apologizing profusely. The stranger can only smile at her and say, “it’s okay, don’t worry. But if you really want to make it up to me, let me buy you a coffee to replace this one. That’s only if you aren’t in a hurry?”
Mina obliges and the two get to know the little things about each other. How Jeongyeon loves legos, volunteering at shelters, performing and singing, donating to charities, owning an entertainment label with her best friend called UJB Records, is the youngest of 3. Jeongyeon learns that Mina also loves legos, is very shy, has an older brother, works at the hospital nearby as a doctor alongside her sister/best friend.
When the time starts to get away from both of them, Jeongyeon tells Mina that she really enjoyed their time together and that she wishes to see her again if Mina would let her. Mina tells Jeongyeon that she too did enjoy their time together and gives Jeongyeon her number. And since then, their time together has practically flew by.
They’re coming up on their 3 year anniversary and Mina thinks that it is finally time to bring Jeongyeon home for Christmas. They have yet to spend a Christmas together. At first, Mina was very reluctant and even embarrassed to explain to Jeongyeon her reasoning, especially early on into their relationship. But when she finally told her, Jeongyeon was nothing but sweet to her. So much to the point where Mina felt embarrassed at being embarrassed in the first place. Jeongyeon just held her hands, looked her in the eyes and said “it’s okay sweetheart, I’ll wait as long as it takes. I plan on being the one you take, so we have all the time.”
It's not like Jeongyeon hasn’t met Mina’s family before, or vice versa. They met each other’s families about 8 months into dating each other. To the point where Jeongyeon even learned Japanese that way she can speak to Mina’s family without needing anyone to translate. Apparently, her and Jihyo took classes and hired a tutor. Jihyo was definitely up for it, even more so when she started dating Sana a few months after the other two meet. She wanted to be able to communicate with Sana’s family when the time came. That was one of the biggest surprises for Mina. How someone would go through learning a new language just to be able to communicate with her family. Everyone would always say how love is such a beautiful thing and the lengths people go for those they love, and now Mina was getting to experience it first hand. But now when Mina and Sana would tease them for it, they would just brush it off and say they learned it because they are expanding their label to Japan. But even they know that that is just a bonus to it, not the main reason why.
In the midst of them planning to expand their label, the two artists have been regulars to Japan. And while being there, Jeongyeon always made sure to spare a day or two to spend some time with Mina’s family. Jihyo does the same thing with Sana’s. Occasionally, the UJB CEO’s would spend days with both families. The only people missing would be their significant others. Which is funny considering that they were the actual daughters. Their parents would send photos or video call their kids while with them and tease them about it. Saying stuff like “wow, look who made some time for me and took me to lunch” or “I always dreamed of having a daughter-in-law that would enjoy golfing with me.” All these little things started to add up and that’s when Mina knew it was time.

Mina had a very busy and tiring day at the hospital. After her lunch with Sana, the day just picked up and was nonstop. She honestly could not wait to get home, shower and just relax. Her phone starts ringing as she’s preparing her stuff to leave.
“Dr. Myoui speaking” phone sandwiched between her ear and shoulder as she’s grabbing some items to place in her bag.
“Hi Dr. Myoui. I’m experiencing this empty, longing feeling in my chest. I think it’s my heart. And knowing my heart, the only acceptable treatment is my beautiful girlfriend spending the night with me after I cook her a delicious dinner.” Jeongyeon playfully teases through the phone.
Mina can’t help but smile and let out a little laugh. “Oh is that so? And who might have prescribed this treatment for you?”
“It was more of a self diagnosis. I’ve been with a doctor long enough to learn a few things.” Jeongyeon replies matter-of-factly.
“Dummy, that’s not how that works.” Mina teases.
Jeongyeon laughs, “so what do you say? Actually, you can only say yes because I’m already here waiting for you in the lobby.”
“Perfect timing, I was preparing to leave anyways. I’ll try to hurry down to meet you.” Mina says as she picks up her pace.
“No need to rush honey. I don’t mind waiting. Jihyo’s here too with me. Do you think you can let her know she’s here too? Jihyo tried to call her but she didn’t answer.” Jeongyeon asks.
“Sure thing baby. I’ll just bring her down with me. We’ll be there soon.” Mina replies.
“Thanks baby. Can’t wait to see you, I love youuu ~ ” Jeongyeon says in a sing song voice before she hangs up.
Mina shakes her head with a smile as she pockets her phone, walking over to Sana’s office right next to hers. Upon entering, she sees her preparing to leave as well. “Hey Mitang, came to say bye?” Sana chirps.
“Actually, I’m here to collect you. It seems our girlfriends are here waiting for us” Mina says. Sana’s smile is almost blinding at the mention of her girlfriend. She puts a little pep in her step as she meets Mina at the door, “lets go!”
The two girls head down to the lobby looking for their significant others. After a few seconds of glancing, they somehow do not see them. “That’s weird” Mina states, “they said they were here.”
They continue to walk through the lobby, their attention is drawn to the crowd forming towards the other side of the building. It’s a mixture of doctors, nurses and regular people. It’s late November and the hospital has their Christmas holiday decorations already set up, and maybe that’s where their girlfriends are. As they make their way over, the soft sounds of a piano start to play. They both give each other a curious glance as they make their way to the front of the crowd.
Once they finally make their way through, the sight that greets them just melts both of their hearts. There their girlfriends are, both sitting at the piano surrounded by a bunch of kids. And to make it even sweeter, it’s the majority of the kids on the pediatric floor. Mina guesses that they probably took a little field trip down to the lobby to see the holiday decorations.
“Wow, what perfect timing for them to show up huh?” Mina chuckles with a sweet smile as she says to Sana.
“And knowing them, they probably offered to sing them a song.” Sana replies, still looking at them with awe.
While Jeongyeon and Jihyo were waiting for their girlfriends, they decided to make their way over to look at the holiday decorations. They both love this time of year. Soon, the kids on their little field trip joined them so excited. Some even saying how much they love Christmas and can’t wait for Santa. They couldn’t help but smile at them. The hospital gowns and IV poles were a giveaway, that the two best friends just looked at each other and had a silent conversation with one another. Jihyo was the one that approached them, as Jeongyeon made her way over to the piano.
“Hi everyone, I’m Jihyo. And over there at the piano is my best friend Jeongyeon” Jihyo says sweetly as she turns to point at Jeongyeon, who starts to wave with both hands and a giant smile on her face. “We couldn’t help but hear how much you guys love Christmas. It’s our favorite too, so is it okay if we play a little Christmas song for you guys?” Jihyo adds, making eye contact with all of them.
“YES!” the kids all scream in unison. Jihyo smiles so big, her eyes disappear. “Perfect! Come gather around the piano while we get ready.” she tells them.
This is how Mina and Sana found them. Now the melodious tune of Santa Claus is Coming to Town can be heard throughout the hospital lobby. The kids are staring at the duo with such happiness and glee in their eyes. And once they start singing, they can’t help but cheer and clap. Jeongyeon and Jihyo put on a little performance for the kids. Acting silly while they sing, not minding the adults who also gathered to watch. For them, as long as the kids were enjoying themselves, they did not mind one bit.
Once the song ended, the two stood up and bowed for the kids and cheers can be heard all around. They didn’t realize that more people gathered around to hear them, so they start to get a little shy and embarrassed. And in the midst of all the people, Jeongyeon’s eyes find her girlfriend’s. And the smile that Mina is giving Jeongyeon is enough to turn her legs into jello. Jeongyeon waves shyly and mouths a “hi baby” to Mina who returns her hi back.
“Thank you everyone! We hoped you liked our performance.” Jihyo says.
“You guys should come back and perform again!” one of the little girls almost yells.
The duo laughs as Jeongyeon kneels down to make eye contact. “Of course! How about we put on a little concert for you guys as the holidays get closer? I have a few other friends who I’m sure would also like to perform for you all!”
“YES PLEASE!” all the kids yell together and cheer.
Jihyo chimes in with a smile of her own, “Yay, I’ll talk with some people here to schedule something for you all. We’ll see you guys soon.”
The pair wave goodbye and make their way to greet their girlfriend’s with a hug and kiss on the cheek. “Hi guys, sorry about that. We didn’t think there would be so many people.” Jihyo says as she moves her arm around Sana’s waist.
“No need to be sorry, that was so cute. Ugh, I love you so much!” Sana practically squeals as she starts peppering Jihyo’s face with a bunch of kisses.
“That was really sweet of you guys. Are you really going to do a concert for them?” Mina asks as she stares at a Jeongyeon and pushes some hair behind her ears.
“Of course! Obviously we should have asked you guys first, but I’m sure you can make it happen right?” Jeongyeon says as she pulls Mina closer. Mina just nods as she nestles herself in the crook of Jeongyeon’s neck.
They finally part ways and now Mina finds herself at Jeongyeon’s place. Once they got home, Jeongyeon told her to go and take a nice hot bath while she prepares dinner for them.
To say Mina was nervous would be an understatement. The whole time she was in the bath, she kept trying to prepare herself on how to ask Jeongyeon to spend Christmas with her and her family. She planned to ask during dinner, but her nerves were through the roof. If Jeongyeon noticed, she didn’t say anything. Just kept it nice and casual. Jeongyeon was really good at reading Mina, and if Mina had something to say, Jeongyeon was never the one to try to force it out of her. She was always the most patient and understanding.
After dinner, Jeongyeon shooed Mina away to the couch to find a show or movie for them to watch while she cleaned up. Mina was reluctant and wanted to help, but Jeongyeon insisted that she’ll take care of it because she wanted her to relax. Maybe Jeongyeon did it on purpose because she wanted to give her time to sort out whatever was going through the head. And Mina did just that. Practicing her speech in her head again and she was scrolling to find something for them to unwind with. She ended up choosing a random culinary show that was in the top recommended. Jeongyeon joined her on the couch, and Mina spent no time cuddling up to her. The first episode they were somewhat intrigued and had a few conversations throughout it. Mina knew now was the time to ask before she chickens out completely. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. What kept her grounded was the arm around her shoulder, softly rubbing up and down.
“Jeong..” Mina whispers.
“Hmm?” Jeongyeon replies as she moves her attention to Mina.
“Can I ask you something?” Mina says once they make eye contact.
“Of course sweetheart. What’s on your mind?” she replies with a small smile.
“I was won- wondering if for Christmas this year, that you’d maybe want to spend it with my family and I in Japan?” she says as she breaks eye contact with her and starts fiddling with her fingers. “That’s only if you want to of course, and if you don’t already have any plans. Because if you do, then that’s okay too! We can always try again next year but if you don’t, then I would be really really happy if you did.” She gets out almost in a rush. There’s a beat of silence, long enough for Mina to slowly look back up at Jeongyeon. And what surprises her is the big smile Jeongyeon is giving her. Almost to the point where she couldn’t even see her eyes.
Jeongyeon knows she’s nervous, so she cups Mina’s face with her right hand ever so gentle. “Sweetheart, I would be honored to spend Christmas with you and your family.” Still smiling like she won the lottery as she leans down to give her a light peck. Mina can’t help but mirror her smile. She finally lets out a deep exhale as she leans down and places her head in Jeongyeon’s chest.
Jeongyeon lets out a little laugh, “is that why you’ve been so nervous since we got here?”
“Yes, I’ve actually been nervous all day. Even Sana was teasing me about it.” Mina pouts a little. Jeongyeon laughs again. “You didn’t need to be nervous, you know I’d always say yes to you. Plus, I’ve been waiting for this day actually. I can’t believe it finally happened.” She says in an almost cocky tone. Mina laughs a little and playful hits her chest, “yeah yeah, I remember what you said before. Sana will be bringing Jihyo too. Dad’s hospital is hosting a Christmas party slash gala this year. So I thought, what a great time to bring you. You really want to go with me though? Like you actually want to, not because you know how much this would mean to me?” she says almost shyly, thinking Jeongyeon would actually change her answer.
“There’s nowhere I would rather be or anyone else I’d rather spend Christmas with than you. I would be honored to join you and be your date to this party.” Jeongyeon says in a soft tone she knows will help Mina believe her.
“Thank you baby. You don’t know how much this means to me.” Mina replies with a gentle smile.
They get ready for bed and before Jeongyeon lays down, she shoots a text off to Jihyo.
“Meet me in the studio tomorrow morning at 8. I’ll bring breakfast and coffee.”

Christmas time is almost here and they set off to Japan two days before the party. It gives them a few days to settle in. The build up to this point, Jeongyeon has been so nervous. Mina picked up on it, but didn’t want to ask her about it because she knew it would only make her more nervous. Sunday morning starts with them finally being in Japan. During the drive to Mina’s family home, Mina grabs one of Jeongyeon’s hand that’s on top of her knee that keeps bouncing. “Honey, don’t be so nervous. My parents and brother already love you. The rest of the family will too. You’re hard not to love.” She teases lightly. Jeongyeon can’t help but smile. “thanks baby, that’s just what I needed to hear.” And Mina was definitely right, because the moment they arrived, the rest of her family couldn’t stop gushing about how pretty, tall and beautiful Jeongyeon was.
The next day arrives and it happens to be the day before the party/gala. The Myoui’s are finishing up breakfast when Mina’s dad asks Jeongyeon if she can come with him to check the preparations for the gala. Something about checking the sound system set up to make sure everything is ready for the Christmas performances that will be happening. “My future daughter in law works in this business, so it doesn’t hurt to have her check it out right?” Dr. Myoui says.
“Dad, please!” Mina yelps as her cheeks starting turning red.
Jeongyeon lets out a loud laugh, “of course I can Dr. Myoui. Or should I say “otousan?”
Mina’s dad laughs just as loud as her and gives her a thumbs up. Mina playfully slaps Jeongyeon’s shoulder and tells both of them to cut it out.
Jeongyeon suggests bringing Jihyo along and Mina’s dad agrees. Jihyo, Sana and her parents were already on the way anyways. Once they arrive, the dads along with Jeongyeon and Jihyo head out, while the others plan to do a little shopping.

It’s finally Christmas eve, the day of the party/gala. It’s scheduled from 1pm to 6pm, that way there’s still time for everyone to celebrate however they would on Christmas eve. Jeongyeon wakes up earlier than everyone, a little nervous for today. As she gets up from the bed, Mina starts to stir, “honey, where are you going?” She asks in a groggy, but cute voice.
Jeongyeon can’t help but smile at how cute her girlfriend looks with her eyes still closed. “I’m going to start the coffee and cook breakfast for everyone. Keep sleeping love, I’ll wake you up when it’s ready” she finishes with a soft kiss to Mina’s forehead and gets a sleepy “mmm, okay” in return.
Cooking seemed to help calm her nerves. By the time she’s almost done, she even forgets why she’s nervous to being with. “Wow, you must have been up really early to make all this. Couldn’t sleep? Nervous for today?” Dr. Myoui says as he walks into the kitchen. “Well I wasn’t anymore, but you just reminded me so now it’s back” Jeongyeon replies with a sigh and then smiles at him.
“There’s no need to be nervous kiddo, it will go great” he tells her mirroring a smile as he reaches for a mug to grab coffee.
Soon after, the rest of the family starts making there way down to the dining room and that’s Jeongyeon’s sign to go wake up her girlfriend. She excuses herself and heads to their shared room. “Hey sleepyhead, time for breakfast” she says as she rubs Mina’s back to gently rouse her from her sleep. Mina pulls the blanket over her head for a few seconds, then finally resurfaces to find Jeongyeon staring at her with a small smile and love in her eyes.
“Merry Christmas eve” she beams at her.
“Mmm, merry Christmas eve baby” Mina replies with a smile of her own. “You know, I can get used to this. Sleeping in and waking up to breakfast made by you.”
“Oh really? Well, let’s make it our own little tradition starting now.” Jeongyeon says as she leans down to give her a little peck. “Now hurry up, everyone is already waiting downstairs for us” she adds with another soft kiss before standing up to step out.
Mina stretches her arms all the way up and finally makes an attempt to get up. “Our own tradition. I like that" she whispers to herself.
The hospital Christmas gala is a blast. Everyone is truly enjoying themselves and can feel the Christmas spirit. From the lights to the performances, the light snow falling, makes everything magical. Truly a winter wonderland experience. It’s almost sad that the event is coming to an end. Mina honestly feels so happy and content in this moment. She can’t help but to tighten her hold on Jeongyeon’s right arm with a squeeze.
“Everything okay hon?” Jeongyeon moves her head to the side to look at Mina.
“Yeah, just really enjoying this moment with you” she says as she closes her eyes and rubs her thumb on Jeongyeon’s bicep.
Jeongyeon smiles at her, “me too” she says as she leaves a kiss on her forehead.
“Jeong,” Jihyo says and grabs both their attention. “Can you accompany me to the restroom real quick?”
Jeongyeon glances at Mina, who gives her a nod with a smile. “Yeah for sure” Jeongyeon replies, squeezing Mina’s hand as she steps away. The two head off in the direction of the restroom. A minute later, Dr. Myoui steps onto the stage ready to give a closing announcement. He begins to thank everyone for coming out and spending part of their Christmas eve here. Grateful for all those who took part to making this happen and to all the performers. Wishing all those in attendance a good rest of the year and an even better new year.
“Before we officially wrap up this amazing event, there is one last performance. I’ve been keeping this secret for over a month and I’m really excited it’s finally happening.” Dr. Myoui is beaming at the crowd. The lights start to dim on stage and the final performance is about to start.
Mina takes a look at Sana who also has a curious look on her face. “I wonder who it could be.” She says just loudly enough for Sana to hear. “I know, must be someone really good if your dad had to keep it a secret.” Sana replies.
The lights slowly start to come back on and once they realize who’s standing up there, both girls are stuck in place. Almost as if their feet are glued to the ground. Mouths hanging open.
“Minari.. please tell me you’re seeing the same thing as me.”
“If you’re seeing Jeongyeon and Jihyo on the stage, then yes Satang. I’m seeing it too.”
The start of the music cuts them both from saying anything else.
“Hi everyone, Merry Christmas eve! I’m Jeongyeon and this is my best friend Jihyo” she says into the microphone. Both girls wave at the entire crowd “It’s been awhile since I’ve written a song and we actually sang it, so I hope you enjoy it.”
Jeongyeon’s eyes find Mina’s in the crowd right before she starts to sing and gives her the biggest smile she’s ever seen.

Once the song ends, the crowd goes crazy. Jeongyeon and Jihyo performed a beautiful, unexpected Christmas duet. Mina and Sana are still in shock. That performance was truly one of a kind. They didn’t even realize they were holding onto each others arms until one of them moved to face the other.
“Oh my gosh, I think I’m going to cry.” Sana says as tears start to build in her eyes.
“Me too. I’m so lost for words.. They performed that for us?” Mina asks.
“Yes! We truly have the best girlfriends ever. I want to scream.” Sana replies as she starts to lightly stomp her feet. “A Christmas song? FOR US?” her voice jumps a few octaves.
“I’m in such awe that I still can’t believe it.” Mina says as she’s still looking up at the stage.
“Knowing them, it’s probably on their phones waiting to be sent to us. And once we get it, they'll release it and it’ll be playing everywhere by tomorrow.”
Jeongyeon and Jihyo finally arrive back to their girlfriend with shy little smiles. Mina and Sana immediately jump to hug them both and leave a bunch of kisses all over their faces.
“I’m guessing you guys liked it?” Jihyo says as she laughs a little.
“Liked it? I LOVE it. You truly are so amazing my little baby Hyo!” Sana squeals as she keeps peppering JIhyo’s face with kisses.
“And what about you Dr. Myoui?” Jeongyeon asks with a slight tease in her voice.
Mina pulls back and Jeongyeon finally sees tears in her eyes. “Oh no baby, what’s wrong?” Jeongyeon instantly asks. Concern evident in her face.
“No, nothing’s wrong. It was so beautiful. I just – I just love you so much.” Mina practically says with a slight choke in her voice. “I can’t believe you wrote me a Christmas song.”
“I’ll write you a Christmas song every year if it makes you happy. We’ll keep adding to our traditions” Jeongyeon’s voice is so soft and sincere it makes Mina want to sob. All Mina can do is move her face closer to give Jeongyeon a kiss.
The moment is interrupted when she hears Sana say “wish you brought her home for Christmas sooner huh?” Everyone starts to laugh and smile. Mina finishes her laugh and adds, “it’s okay, since she’ll be the one coming to all the Christmases from now on.”
