Ranpo and Dazai knew each other. They understood the pressure of being relied on for every plan, big decision or just any work that was deemed "Too hard." They related to the feeling of self-inflicted isolation a bit too much for their likings.

Even at the agency, there was still an invisible barrier that Ranpo couldn't cross, making him feel alone in a world of monsters again, and Dazai felt inhumane surrounded by such brave and righteous souls. But, neither of them felt as isolated as before. Because, after their first interaction, they felt that someone understood.

And that was world opening for them.

Unbeknownst to their co-workers, they regularly seeked each other out, whether it was to buy crab and icecream or people-watch, they would often end up curled up in blankets together at the end of the day.

'How did I get so lucky?' Osamu thought.
Unlike any ordinarily person, Edogawa responded. "I think that myself."

Both of them had been with others before.

Before Dazai left the port, he had dated the short ginger executive Chuuya Nakahara. It had been possesive and toxic, right people wrong time sort of scenario. It had been broken off when Dazai blew up his car and left out of the blue.

For Ranpo, he had been stuck in a borderline abusive relationship with an unlikely introvert: Edgar Allan Poe. Poe and Ranpo had gotten together in their high school, and had dated for almost a year when Ranpo found out about Poe's… tendencies. Poe had Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and had been stalking Ranpo for about the whole year, which made him break it off immediately. However, Poe was quite the clingy ex and continued trying to track Ranpo for the next 12 years.

Another thing that both of them possessed was the shared experience of selective mutisim. Ranpo was autistic but Dazai was not, leading him to feel insecure and like he was faking it, although that was simply not the case. Ranpo would shower him with validation and praise, calling him an idiot for not seeing how good he was.

While the rest of the agency thought Ranpo was just ignoring them, or being stuck-up, he was actually going into a non-verbal state and feeling pressurised to talk. Kunikida's constant shouting at Dazai often made him force himself to talk, or feel like something was wrong with him.

All the hearts he had harmed, tried to force himself to love, only to end up leaving them anyway. All those mistakes he'd made, until he was 22 years old and had made nothing of his life. No accomplishments or meaningful relationships. Just a blackened trail of nothing.

But maybe, for this one person, it could be different. Maybe, he would stay.

Whenever Ranpo was feeling upset that he couldn't find his way around the train station or Poe was pestering him too much he would go home to Dazai and nuzzle into his jacket as Dazai petted him on him head and gave him praise and compliments. It was a borderline queerplatonic relationship but the tipping point into romantic territory was the few gentle kisses exchanged rarely, after a particularly good outing, or Dazai helping Ranpo navigate the train.

The nature of their relationship was more soft than other people percived, each of them seeking comfort, from one broken child to another.
