“Vi! Hello, earth to Vi! Are you listening to me?” Powder exclaimed with a worried expression on her face as she shook her palm in front of her sister’s face.
Vi blinked and saw her sister’s expression across the table as she came to her senses and let out a soft chuckle. “Yeah sorry, Pow Pow my mind drifted off for a minute. It’s been a crazy couple of days” she said as she squeezed her eyes.
“Jeez, you do look tired. Maybe we should’ve canceled our lunch so you could go take a nap.” Powder said with dry humor. “Things going okay at the gallery?”
Vi grinned at her sister’s comments. “Yeah, things are going great. We have a new exhibition coming up in a couple of weeks, and I’ve been slammed with the preparations for this artist.” She stretched in her chair and added “I’m just a bit sleep-deprived, that’s all. Plus I wouldn’t miss our Friday lunch. Catching up with my sister is the highlight of my week.” She said with an amusing grin.
“Oh sis, you sound so single.” Powder said deadpan. Vi let out a laugh.
“Don’t get me wrong, I love our time together, but you really need to get a girlfriend.” Powder added.
Vi continued to grin as she grabbed a piece of her lunch and started to chew. Powder never missed the opportunity to tell Vi that she wasn’t getting any younger or that she needed to find a girlfriend. And then a few weeks back, Powder had called Vi to ramble about a dating app designed only for women, and all the success it was having and encouraging her sister to download it. Vi wasn’t too thrilled about creating a profile, but she agreed to give it a try.
“How’s it going with the app? Any interesting matches?” Powder asked.
“It’s going…” Vi replied with food still in her mouth. “I’m getting matched with a bunch of women. And I’ve replied to a couple of messages. But since I’ve been so busy, I haven’t really been constant, once I message them again, it’s pretty clear that they only want to meet up for sex.”
“What a curse, sis.” Powder added sarcastically as she raised her glass of lemonade and took a sip.
Vi smirked and continued chewing.
“The main thing if you want to find a girlfriend, is that you have to be consistent with the conversations. Don’t think too much about it, if conversation starts to flow, invite them out and just be yourself. Once in person, you can decide whether they’ll get a second date, you take them to bed or never see them again. As simple as that!” Powder ended with a playful high tone.
Vi chuckled and nodded as she continued to eat her lunch. She knew Powder was right. She needed to dedicate some time from her packed schedule to make conversation if she wanted to find someone serious.
They continued to chat throughout their lunch, Powder was eagerly telling Vi about some of her classes, her upcoming internship, and her struggles with her roommates. Vi truly loved these lunches with her sister. It was a nice breath of fresh air from her busy routine. And no matter how busy her week was, she always made time to catch up with Powder.
After they finished lunch, Powder had to head back to school for one of her classes and Vi headed back to her gallery. It wasn’t too far from the restaurant they were at, and although she could easily ride her motorcycle, she’d much preferred the 15-minute walk back. She enjoyed walking through a long park and take in the scenery as it helped her get her mind off work for a few more minutes.
By the time Vi was back at the gallery, it was almost 3:00 pm. She headed to her office, threw herself on the small couch she had, and pulled out her phone. She groaned as she remembered Powder’s words, and opened the app. She had a couple of notifications, but Vi decided to ignore them and instead started to swipe. She looked at the first photo of the first profile, and after a few seconds, she swiped left. She repeated the action for the following 3 profiles. And just as she was about to give up on the swiping and get back to work, a pair of sharp blue eyes caught her attention. Vi immediately straightened up on the couch and focused her attention on the photo on her phone.
It was a woman sitting at a table, in what it looked to be a café. Her chin gently resting on her hand. She had straight dark blue hair down to her shoulders. Beautiful sharp features, but her eyes, those blue eyes that seemed to pierce through her soul. Completely baffled, Vi swiped to the next photo.
The second photo showed the same woman in front of the finish line of a marathon showing off a medal. Her hair was up in a messy ponytail. She had a wide grin that gave a glimpse of a cute tiny gap between her front teeth.
As Vi continued to admire this woman she scrolled to put a name on this woman.
Caitlyn, 34
“Caitlyn..” Vi muttered as she moved to the next photo. This time Caitlyn was casually riding a horse. Vi could see her long toned legs through her riding pants and boots.
“I'm a curious mind with a wanderlust soul, always eager to explore new ideas and new horizons. I love indulging in delicious food and craft cocktails. When I'm not focused on my startup, you'll find me staying active and exploring the outdoors.
If you share my drive and enthusiasm for life and can spark a great conversation, let’s grab a coffee (or a glass of wine) and see where it goes.”
“Beautiful, smart, also has her own business and likes to stay active? I think I’m in love!” Vi exclaimed. And without hesitation, she swiped right.
Immediately a flame appeared on the screen with the legend “It’s a match”.
Well, what do you know! Vi uttered with a pleased tone and a wide grin.
She tried to think of a good message to send to start the conversation and began typing.
“Alright, we’ve matched—clearly, we both have excellent taste. Now the real question is: do we bond over food recommendations, travel destinations, or who can do more push-ups? ;) "
Vi smiled pleased at her message and let out a sigh. “Be consistent with conversations, I can do that!”
She locked her phone and decided to get back to work to take her mind off those blue eyes while she waited for a response.
