Chapter 1
Rio’s eyes narrow, lips thinning in suspicion as she slows to a halt in the middle of the pavement. A surprised yelp fills the air as a stranger behind her finds themselves caught unawares by her apparently sudden halt, though this muted protest does little to draw her attention back down to the crowds around her.
Instead, she tilts her head, feels a breeze brush across the back of her neck as she zeroes in on the roof of one of the few low-lying buildings to still exist in this particular part of the city. Sunlight, warm and golden, threatens to blind her, to overwhelm her and obscure all the world from view -
There.
Anger, hot and molten and electric, slithers through her veins. How dare they?! This woman, this . . . Agatha was supposed to be her mark, hers – so why the ever loving fuck were there other operatives here?! Did they not trust her to get the job done?! Had she not proven herself to be more than capable enough of an agent?!
A quiet growl rises up into her throat. This was not a part of the deal -
Well, she muses to herself, two can play at that game, now, can't they?!
She bares her teeth in a silent snarl as she bows her head, pulls her hood up to hide her face from view. Asphalt gives way beneath her feet as she slips back into the crowd, eyes dancing as subtly as possible across everyone and everything around her – she hadn’t been stopped for that long, so, surely, Agatha couldn’t have gone that far, right?
Right?!
