A Bond Can Encompass (aka The High Note)

“Sherlock- no. John promised me we’d see the symphony tonight,” You spat back at your elder brother, brows downturned in challenge and nostrils flared. You unconsciously spit your scent into the air without trying, challenging the other alpha in the room with your head held high. It’s rare that female alphas exist within a family, even rarer that the other children would also be alphas without a beta in sight. Sherlock is unperturbed by your claim, his scent stark and pungent as it battled against yours in the air. Sherlock takes a step closer to John’s side, smirking for a moment at the way your body instantly shifts closer to protect your Bonded, your mate, even when you know Sherlock would never physically harm him (experiment yes, but even you could respect that to a certain degree).

“John has to be with me on this case, (y/n). You’re emotions are getting in the way of your better judgement.” It is true, you are , but it’s not something that you can easily handle now that the pull between you and John is so strong. Despite his lack of tattoo, John is yours, your mate, your Bonded, and he is enamored with you wholly. And even if Sherlock knew him first and the fact that they are partners, you are his mate and dammit, you want to see the symphony as planned! John remains quiet, dizzy off of the alpha fumes, his cheeks flushing as he realized he is the reason for the sudden spat. And he doesn’t know what to say either- he should say he’s going t the symphony, but he had promised that he would work the case with Sherlock, in fact, it was always an unspoken rule between them. John is useful, being an omega especially, seeing as it helps to confuse the enemy efficiently.

“John, we’re going to the symphony.”

“John, let’s go.”

“Uh- can I just-” John stares between the two people that mean the most to him and it hurts to be placed in the middle of a family spat. Choosing between his job and his Bonded is a heavy pill to swallow and John doesn’t like his predicament. His mouth tugs down at the corners, of sadness, guilt, and disappointment as he came to peer down at his feet. He’s just one person, and he feels smaller as an omega, wants to cower under their steely gazes even if he is proud and strong in his own way. Clearing his throat, John tried to diffuse the situation.

“How about we-” His expression sours as he went ignored.

Symphony.

Case.

They are like children fighting over the single toy or family pet for their own and John is quickly tired of it.

It’s not your favorite situation as your fingers possessively clutch at John’s and you stare ahead, at eye level with the center of the stage, but it could be worse. John could be in danger somewhere too far for you to reach him, or worse, hurt without Sherlock nearby to get him to safety. And Sherlock is already ignoring the both of you and the case, gaze softened in the glow of the stage lights as the conductor took the stage. Forcing him to abandon the case for joining the two of you at the symphony was hard fought and hard won, but John had the upper hand using his omega tactics, and he can’t really complain. People are staring, in awe and seething jealousy, watching the way you press in close to John to rub your scent all over him and Sherlock unconsciously sits closer than he should, but you both allow it. Sherlock is the only other alpha besides Mycroft that you would ever allow near your John, trusting that he wouldn’t take advantage in any other way but scientifically (and even then, the line was hard pressed).

Sherlock is your best friend and brother, and you were well aware of how close he is to John, and it is something that you wouldn’t change no matter how much your alpha mentality demands otherwise, pushing you to fight for your mate as if you were a barbarian.

And in the midst of all this is John, who, despite being blatantly aware of his boundaries, still feels joy at being valued by two of the most brilliant alpha minds in the world, knowing full well that you and Sherlock would do anything for him.
