Daichi X Reader - Call at Eight [PurgeAU]

*Three days before the Annual Purge*

“You’re almost done Jaime. Just a couple more minutes,” you said as you checked the equipment in front of you.

“Good. I know that this is for a good cause, but I fucking hate needles.” You let out a laugh.

“I know. Thank you for helping me every year. Even though you don’t like anything medical related.”

“I hate this day just as much as you do. I’m going to do anything to help.”

“All done!” Jaime let out a breath when you took the needle out of his arm and put the bandage over it.

“Oh thank god.”

“Go get yourself some juice and cookies. I’m almost done with my shift then we can go home.” Jaime nodded, walking over to the food. You were cleaning up when your coworker walked up to you.

“Want me to put this with the others?”

“Yes please. I’ll pick them up in a couple days,” you said. They nodded and took the blood to the back room for storage.

*One day before the Annual Purge*

“Are you guys ready for tomorrow?” Laney asked you.

“Just about. Jaime is getting a few more things then we will be. What about you?”

“We just need the blood then we’ll be set,” she said, sipping on her drink.

“Okay, look. I love what you do, but why are you risking your lives to help people that might kill you?” Joe asked.

“Because it’s the right thing to do,” Jaime said as he walked into the store.

“You don’t even like looking at wounds!” Joe said.

“It’s still the right thing to do. I also have to protect [y/n]. What are brothers for if not that?”

Joe dropped the subject after that.

*Five hours before the Annual Purge*

“Here’s some blood. We don’t have as much as last year because Jaime missed a couple donation dates,” you said.

“I was sick and it was not my fault!” Jaime yelled from the back of your vehicle. Laney shook her head with a small smile.

“If you need more there’s some at base.”

“Got it.”

“I heard that Joe ran into some trouble with his shop yesterday. What happened?”

“These no good girls came and tried to shoplift. Joe and I stopped them but they threatened to come back tonight. Then the insurance company raised the amount of money Joe has to pay and now he doesn’t have any insurance to cover the store.”

“Don’t tell me he’s gonna stay there all night,” you said. When Laney nodded, you groaned.

“Jesus Christ,” you muttered.

“I’ll check up on him periodically, don’t worry. He’s in my zone anyways.”

“Thank you. Keep me updated please.”

“Of course,” Laney said with a nod.

*One hour before the Annual Purge*

“Are we set Jaime?” You asked your brother.

“Yup! I just have to lock this stretcher in place.” Jaime grunted and a loud click was heard. “Got it!”

“Alright. One last check before we head out. Gauze?”

“Check.”

“Medical tape?”

“Check.”

“Bandages and alcohol wipes?”

“Check and check.”

“Blood bags, scissors, guns, and bullets?”

“Here and accounted for.”

“Awesome. We are ready to go.”

“Hopefully Roan wins this election and we don’t have to do this for much longer,” Jaime said as he shut the doors to the van.

“Hopefully. But I honestly don’t see that happening.”

*Thirty minutes before the Annual Purge*

You and Jaime were sitting in the front seat of your van, a beer in hand. It might be your last night on earth, so why not have a drink? The two of you always did this. One last drink with your little brother before the twelve hours of terror began. Jaime had just cracked a joke when someone knocked on his window.

“Jesus Christ!” Jaime yelled, jumping in his seat. Beer spilled on his pants and shirt. You had pulled out your pistol and was pointing it out the window at the man.

“I’m sorry,” the man said in slightly broken English. “I didn’t mean to scare you.”

“What do you need?” You said, never lowering your gun.

“I’m not from here and I don’t know what’s going on. Why are people boarding up their homes and walking the streets with weapons?”

“Are you a tourist?” Jaime asked.

“No. I’m a transfer student.”

“Let me see your hands,” Jaime said, getting out of the van. You remained alert, gun trained on the man, eyes searching your surroundings.

“What’s your name?” You asked.

“Sawamura Daichi. But you can call me Daichi.”

“How have you never heard of the Purge?”

“The Purge? I don’t understand,” Daichi said. You looked at Jaime and sighed.

“You should have gone back home. But since you didn’t, we’ll try to keep you safe tonight,” you said, lowering your weapon.

“Keep me safe?”

“Yes. The Purge is the one time of year when anything is legal. They’ll announce it in about twenty minutes,” Jaime said.

“Oh.” Realization was creeping up on Daichi’s face and you felt bad for the man.

“We’ll keep you safe but if you pull anything I will not hesitate to shoot you.” You had a hard look on your face and Daichi knew that you were telling the truth.

“I will not do anything. With what you’re saying, I just want to make it through the night.”

“Good. I hope you’re not too squeamish. You’ll be seeing some dark things tonight.”

*Two hours into the Annual Purge*

Daichi had been a great help. He didn’t complain about anything and had acted quickly when you needed him to. So far eight people had been helped by the three of you.

“We got a critical one [y/n]!” Jaime yelled from the front seat.

“Will we have to take this one to base?”

“I think so.” The two of you got out of the van and ran up to the woman.

“Two gunshot wounds in her stomach and one on her leg. Multiple abrasions to the face and neck,” you said out loud. The woman started to move and you stilled her.

“Don’t move sweetheart. You need to keep still,” you said to her.

“Here’s the stretcher,” Daichi said. “Jaime is getting the back ready.”

“Help me lift her on here. Make sure not to move her around too much.” Daichi nodded and moved to her feet.

“One, two, three!” The woman stifled a scream and you made soothing noises.

“It’s almost done sweetie. Hold on for one more minute.” You carefully rolled the stretcher over to the van and Daichi looked at you with awe. Even in stressful situations you were so calm and always managed to calm down a hysterical person. Even if they died, they died feeling calm and in peace.

“Hurry up [y/n]. I feel too exposed here,” Jaime said. “I have a bad feeling about this.”

“Got it.” You sped up and helped Daichi put her in the back.

“Let’s go to base Jaime. We’re gonna need a surgeon for this one.” Jaime nodded and started driving.

“I need you to put pressure on her stomach Daichi. If we don’t stop this bleeding, she won’t make it.”

“Okay.” Daichi took the towel you handed him and started applying pressure.

“Thank you,” the woman said.

“You’re welcome. What’s your name sweetheart?”

“Serena.”

“Well Serena, we’re going to try our damned hardest to make sure you make it through the night. Are you allergic to any medicine?”

“No.”

“Good. Do you know what blood type you are?”

“No.”

“That’s okay. We have blood you can take later.”

“Why not now?”

“You’re losing too much blood. It wouldn’t do anything to help.”

“Oh, okay.”

“But don’t worry. We’re only here to help. I just need you to keep talking to me,” you said.

“”What do you want me to say?”

“Are you in school? What are some of your hobbies?”

“I finished school last year. I’m a lawyer now.”

“That’s cool. What else can you tell me?”

“I p-play soccer,” Serena said with a cough. “My kids love watching me play.”

“You have kids? What are their names?”

“Tony and David. They’re ten years old.”

You handed Daichi another towel and took the blood-soaked one from him. Before you could move your hand away, Daichi grabbed it and gave it a squeeze. You looked at him and he mouthed ‘Thanks’. Nodding, you let go of his hand and started talking to Serena.

“Where are your kids?” You asked.

“I-I think they’re w-with their aunt and uncle. W-Will, their father, tried to kill u-us. I saw my k-kids with my sister l-last.” Panic was starting to appear in her voice. “W-We need to go b-back!”

“Serena, sweetheart. I need you to calm down,” you said. “I’ll send someone to search for them and make sure that they’re okay.”

“All of t-them?”

“All of them. Do you have your phone on you?”

“Back pocket.” Serena shifted a bit and you took the phone.

“Passcode is 2897. My s-sisters n-name is N-Nicole.”

“Okay. Once we get you stabilized, I’ll call her. Right now we need to focus on getting you to safety.”

---

The four of you arrived at the base sooner than you thought. Serena got the medical attention she needed and was sleeping in the corner of the room. You, Daichi, and Jaime were taking a breather before heading out once more.

“You can stay here if you want to, Daichi,” you said. “You’ll be safer and could still help.”

“I probably will. Thank you for everything.”

“You’re welcome.”

“You ready [y/n]?” Jaime asked you.

“In a sec!” You called back.

“It was nice to meet you, Daichi. When all of this is over, do you wanna go get some coffee or something?”

“I would like that.” He gave you a smile and your face lit up.

“Awesome! Do you have a phone?”

“Yes.”

“I’m gonna put my number in here. Call me at eight and we’ll go get coffee.”

“Sounds like a plan.”

You put your number into his phone then walked away, waving right before you left the room. Daichi waved back before making himself busy.

*Ten minutes after the Annual Purge*

Daichi had had a crazy night. He ran around town saving people and almost died once or twice, met a Senator he had never heard of, and the base was attacked. Luckily nobody got hurt. He had never had this much going on at once back home. Not even Hinata caused this much shit. He was most likely going to take [y/n]’s advice and leave the country this time of year next year. Maybe he’d take [y/n] with him. Who knew?

He had been sitting down, resting for a bit before the paramedics came and picked up the people who needed it most, when some people came up to him.

“Is your name Daichi? I’m sorry if I pronounced it wrong,” a young woman said.

“You pronounced it correctly. What can I do for you?”

“Do you know where a woman called Serena is? She’s my sister. I have her kids with me.”

“Did [y/n] call you?” Daichi said, hope in his voice.

“No. Some guy did.” Daichi’s face fell.

“Oh. Well Serena is over there. Let me see if she can do visitors right now.”

Daichi dragged his feet over to Serena’s little corner and asked the man tending to her if she could see some people. He nodded and Daichi waved the woman and two children over. They rushed to their family member and the women shed many happy tears. The kids were super excited to see their mother again and Daichi couldn’t help but smile at the touching scene.

His eyes widened when he thought of [y/n] and Jaime. Why didn’t [y/n] call like she said she would? A million different scenarios ran through Daichi’s head. He fumbled for his phone and called [y/n]. Even though it was only a couple seconds, it felt like forever before [y/n] picked up the phone for Daichi.

“Hello?” She said.

Letting out a breath he didn’t know he was holding, Daichi said, “Oh thank god you’re okay.”

“Who is this?”

“Daichi. I helped you for a bit and you kept me safe for a bit tonight.”

“Oh, hi Daichi! I thought you were going to call me at eight?”

“I was going to wait, but Serena’s family came in and said that a male had called. She didn’t know who you were.”

“That’s sweet of you. Very sweet. But I’m okay. I just wanted to clean up before I met with you later,” [y/n] said. “I’m sorry if worried you.”

“It’s okay. Jaime is okay right?”

“Yup. Almost everyone is okay.” Daichi could hear the sob she tried to choke back.

“What’s wrong? What happened?”

“I doubt you knew him, but a man named Joe died tonight. He was basically my father since my real one was never around.”

“I’m so sorry [y/n].”

“It’s okay.”

“Do you still want to meet at eight?”

“Can we meet now?” [Y/n] said after a slight pause.

“Of course. Let me see if they need me to do anything first.”

“Okay.”

Daichi didn’t have anything else to do, so he met up with [y/n] at a local coffee shop. They talked about everything they could so they would forget about the events of the last twelve hours. Hopefully they wouldn’t be there next year. Daichi was already planning a trip back home to Japan and he couldn’t wait.
