She’d been eyeing her all night, in her little, fancy red dress, the one that she’d bought for her as the make up for her disastrous Valentine’s day reaction. Alex looked stunning as always, but it was the addition of the tiny little neon green baby in her arms that really had caught her eye.
Maggie was only at the party as a favor to Lena, playing security and not a tall there because she knew that Alex would be there and she was hoping for a 2nd chance…Certainly not…nope..it never even crossed her mind…’right, we all believe you Maggie’…
The Latina took a deep breath and a sip of her drink of scotch, and plucking up her courage, she wondered over to the agent, giving her a dimpled smile. “Hey Danvers, long time no see”.
The red head startled at her voice, but smiled a genuine, if a bit acward smile, “hey Mags”. “Who’s this little lady?”, she asked, softly caressing the baby’s cheek.
“Kellyrose, but we call her Rosie for short”, Alex answered, a soft smile on her face, as she gazed lovingly down at the 2 month old in her arms. The detective hesitated for a moment, before taking another big breath. “Alex…can we talk please…just for a few moments?”.
The agent glanced at her former fiancée…before taking a deep breath, suddenly feeling nervous herself…ok…she could do this…it was just a conversation with the ex love of her life…no big deal…”sure, let’s go outside into the garden, where it’s quieter”.
Maggie nodded her agreement and they stepped out onto the porch, with the baby in toe, tucked safely into Alex’s chest, away from the cold wind. “She’s beautiful Alex, truly, and I really love her name”, the Latina said as she gently played with the baby’s hand, making her giggle a little. Alex watched as her baby giggled at her ex fiancé.
Finally she cleared her throat, “what is it that you wanted to talk about Mags?”, she asked with a guarded, slightly confused expression on her face. The Latina cleared her own throat…suddenly very nervous and frightened, seeing this Alex reached out to gently run her hand soothingly down her arm, giving as much comfort as she dared to this incredible woman that she still loved with all of her heart.
“Can we start over?”, she asked tearfully, “I love you so much Alex…and I’ve missed you a lot…and I know that your a mummy now…and I’m ok with that…I’m open to being with you…to being a mum with you…because I’ve had to live my life for two years without you in it…and it kills me everyday…”, the Latina was full on crying now and Alex’s eyes weren’t dry either, because she knew that feeling as well…knew it every bloody day…and she hated it also…but she had to be sure…because she had the little ones now, and she couldn’t take another heartbreak like the last one.
“Are you sure…you’re ok with having 3 little ones all at once?”, Alex checked, referring to the triplets. Maggie answered by lifting on her tipytoes, whispering ride or die in her ear, and then kissing her soundly. Alex made a noise in her throat that sounded suspiciously like a whimper and wrapped her free arm round the detective, pulling her closer and deepening the kiss. When they pulled away, they were both breathing a bit hard, and Alex was looking a bit dazed.
The shorter woman smiled her favorite dimpled smile, and Alex melted as Maggie gently threaded her fingers through the baby’s hair, smiling in wonder at the big eyes watching her quietly, before running a soothing hand down Alex’s spine, making the agent shiver from something other then the cold.
“Let’s go back inside and get everyone warm”, Maggie offered, before taking Alex’s hand and leading the younger woman inside. Alex laid the baby in the crib with her siblings, before joining Maggie back at the party.
As the clock struck midnight, and the party goers watched the ball drop, Alex and Maggie cuddled on the couch with their glasses of scotch. Maggie laid her head on Alex’s shoulder, kissed her neck, and then murmured “Happy New Year Alex, I’m really looking forward to spending the new year with you”. “Ride or die”, Alex murmured. Maggie made a sound of agreement, before they retired to the bedroom to rest and get reacquainted with each other.
As the woman laid snuggled in each other’s arms, slowly drifting off to sleep, their last thought each was that it was a wonderful New Year’s Eve, and that they were looking forward to waking in the morning to a brand new life…together.
