unadulterated pining (for her face, her voice, her clothing)

as glinda rested her head in elphaba’s lap, elphaba couldn’t help but let herself get lost in the blonde girl’s features.

peaceful’ is how elphaba would describe her friend’s current state.

her eyes were shut, however, elphaba knew the deep brown colour that was under glinda’s heavy lids. the ones that gave her reassurance and comfort whenever she would look in to them, sometimes momentarily, sometimes longingly.

glinda’s lips were slightly upturned, elphaba wondered if she was having a good dream. if she could dream, elphaba was sure glinda would be in majority of them.

fantasies of running away together, to a faraway land. to start fresh, just the two of them. it was selfish, but all elphaba could want is to keep glinda for herself.

so many things they can do together. elphaba would teach glinda magic, just as she always dreamed. glinda would stay by her side through everything. through all of the obstacles that elphaba would have to face, they would be able to do it together.

but as glinda stirred, it snapped elphaba back into reality. she knew that none of that would ever be possible, not in a society like this.

glinda blinked the sleep out of her eyes and looked up at elphaba. that all too familiar soft smile brought out a similar expression on elphaba’s face.

“are we almost there, elphie?” glinda questioned.

“yeah, almost.” elphaba replied.

glinda nodded, and hastily went back to sleep.

no,’ elphaba thought, ‘don’t ruin this. don’t be selfish.

growing up, all elphaba ever wanted was a friend. someone like glinda, to listen, and care, and be there just because she wanted to, not because she had to. now she has that, she can't lose it.

although all she wants right now is glinda, she would settle for this. it wasn’t worth their friendship, her only friendship.

unrequited may not be the right word, but it was a messy type of love between the two girls. elphaba thought that some things should be left unsaid. she knew that glinda loved her, just as much as she did back, if not more.

but no. it’s for the best.

besides, they’ve almost reached the emerald city. with the amount of events coming towards elphaba, there was no time for feeble attempts of getting glinda to open her eyes. figuratively and literally.

so this will do, just for now. just two good friends.

elphaba reached over to glinda's hand, and clutched it tight.

maybe one day.
