Kung pwede lang maging sa'yo
The air in the Student Council office hummed with the low hum of the air conditioner, a stark contrast to the rising heat of anticipation in Jhoanna's chest. Across the polished wooden table, Aiah sat, her brow furrowed in concentration as she reviewed the budget for the upcoming Acquaintance Party. Sunlight streamed through the large windows, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air, casting a warm glow on Aiah's profile.
Jhoanna, ever the meticulous one, meticulously arranged the scattered papers on the table, her gaze occasionally straying towards Aiah. Maraiah Queen Arceta, the Student Council President, was a force of nature – confident, charismatic, and undeniably brilliant. Jhoanna, the Vice President, admired her deeply, a quiet admiration that bordered on awe.
Aiah, sensing her gaze, looked up, her eyes crinkling at the corners as she smiled.
"Something on your mind, Jhoanna?"
Jhoanna, startled, quickly looked away, her cheeks flushing. "Ah, wala. Just… making sure everything is in order."
Aiah chuckled, a low, melodious sound that sent shivers down Jhoanna's spine. "Don't worry, Jho. You're doing a fantastic job. Everything is under control." Aiah leaned back in her chair, a thoughtful expression on her face. "We need to make this Acquaintance Party the best one yet. After all, Ito yung first impression ng university natin para sa mga incoming freshmen, and we want to make it unforgettable."
Jhoanna nodded eagerly. "I agree. Kailangan nating mag come up with something unique, something that will really stand out." Afterall, it was Jhoanna’s first acquaintance party as the vice president of the university.
Aiah tapped her pen thoughtfully against the table. "Themed party kaya? Maybe a 'Decades Dance' para maiba naman? Alam mo ba yun?" Aiah asked and Jhoanna innocently shrug. "It's a themed event na parang retro. We could have different areas representing each decade-- start from 1950's ganun. With music and decorations to match." Saad ni Aiah. The enthusiasm is evident in her voice as she told Jhoanna about her idea.
Jhoanna's eyes lit up. "I think magandang idea yan! We could have a 50s diner, a 60s psychedelic lounge, a 70s disco, an 80s arcade, and a 90s grunge scene." Jhoanna replied, matching the same energy Aiah had.
Aiah grinned. "Hindi ko alam kung paano mo naisip yan but it's good. We could even have a costume contest with prizes for the best dressed in each decade."
Jhoanna, already envisioning the possibilities, started sketching out a rough floor plan on a notepad. "We could have a live band playing music from each decade, and maybe even a dance competition."
Aiah leaned forward, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "And we could have food stalls serving classic dishes from each decade. Say, milkshakes and burgers in the 50s section, pizza and disco balls in the 70s, and ramen and karaoke in the 90s. What do you think?"
Jhoanna laughed. "It would be amazing! Pero, we need to make sure we have enough budget for everything. Baka mamaya kasi plano tayo nang plano rito tapos kulang pala ang budget."
Aiah chuckles and pulled out her laptop. "Let's go over the budget again. We need to see where we can cut costs and where we can allocate more funds."
Jhoanna leaned closer, her eyes following Aiah's movements on the screen. "Siguro pwede tayong kumuha ng sponsorships from local businesses. We could offer them advertising space at the party in exchange for their support." She said, her eyes are still on Aiah's.
Aiah nodded. "That's a good idea. I'll start drafting a proposal for potential sponsors na."
As they delved deeper into the planning, the initial nervousness that had gripped Jhoanna began to fade. She found herself completely engrossed in the project, her mind buzzing with ideas. Aiah, with her infectious enthusiasm and sharp intellect, was a captivating leader. Jhoanna admired her confidence, her decisiveness, and her ability to inspire others. Up to this day, hindi parin siya makapaniwalang nasa iisang space lang sila ngayon ni Aiah. With that thought, she can't help but to think about the day where she Aiah became close.
It was in freshman year. The air in the university gym was thick with anticipation. It was nearing election day, and the candidates were buzzing around, shaking hands and delivering last-minute speeches. Jhoanna, a quiet observer more interested in the free snacks than the political discourse, found herself drawn to a particular candidate: Aiah.
Aiah, a third-year student, running for Vice President, had a captivating aura. Her voice, when she spoke, was clear and confident, her laughter warm and infectious. Jhoanna, usually shy and reserved, found herself watching Aiah with an intensity that surprised even herself.
It wasn't just Aiah's charisma that captivated Jhoanna. It was the way she moved – fluid and graceful, even in the chaotic environment of the gym. It was the way her eyes crinkled at the corners when she smiled, a smile that seemed to light up the entire room. It was the way she connected with the students, making them feel seen and heard.
Jhoanna started noticing Aiah everywhere. In the library, where Aiah would be deeply engrossed in a book, her brow furrowed in concentration. In the cafeteria, where Aiah would be chatting with friends, her voice a melodic counterpoint to the usual din. In class, where Aiah would raise her hand, her insights always insightful and thoughtful. Jhoanna found herself seeking out Aiah, lingering near her during breaks, inventing reasons to walk past her in the hallway.
"Jho, tapatin mo nga ako. May crush ka na med 'no? Kaya ka balik nang balik sa area na 'to. Mga med students ang mostly nandirito eh". Sabi ng friend niyang si Stacey noong makahalata na siya sa kinikilos ni Jhoanna.
Jhoanna just shrugged it out, persistent about not getting caught. "Mas masarap lang kasi yung mga tinda nila sa canteen 3 kaya dito tayo dumadaan. Huwag kang delulu diyan!". She replied, keeping her straight face and bits her tongue. No matter what happens, huwag kang aamin, Jhoanna, she reminded herself.
"Sus! Mama mo! Hindi ako tanga para hindi mapansin ang kinikilos mo, Jho. Lie all you want but I'll make sure na malalaman ko rin kung sino yung crush mo." She made it crystal clear that she isn't happy on what her friend is doing.
The other girl just laughs at her friend making Stacey rolled her eyes at her. "Relax lang kasi, Staks. Worth it lang kasi talagang balik balikan yung menu nila doon. At teka lang, gusto mo rin naman yung mango graham bar nila doon ah!" Jhoanna shifted at pabirong hinampas si Stacey.
"Te? Syempre ano pa bang magagawa ko kundi bumili? Eh yun lang naman ang gusto ko doon. At kung tatanungin mo lang ako kung worth it yun balik balikan-- well hindi! Hindi nakakatuwang makalampas pa tayo ng apat na college para makapunta doon beh."
"Ihh, sorry na. Libre nalang kita this time para hindi ka magsawa kakasama sa'kin". Jhoanna replied, pasimpleng sinusuhol si Stacey.
"At talagang may balak ka pang umulit?" Stacey exclaimed. "Hindi mo ako madadaan sa ganyan, Jho. Dapat isang linggong libre 'yan"
Jhoanna scoffed, "Aba namihasa! Ikaw nga dapat nanlilibre sa akin kasi resort owner ka. Ni hindi ko pa nga natitikman libre mo sa sobrang kuripot mo eh."
"Excuse me? Sino ba ang nagpipilit sa aking samahan siya aber? At saka anong sinasabi mong hindi mo pa natitikman ang libre ko, hoy!" Stacey immediately stopped walking and faced Jhoanna, her irritation seated evidently on her face, "Fyi, ilang beses ka nang pumunta sa resort nang hindi nagbabayad ng entrance fee at nakikimeryenda ka pa. At hindi ka pa nahihiyang mag take out!" She blurted out which made Jhoanna laughed harder and she shielded her arms to protect from Stacey kasi pinaghahampas na niya siya.
"Aray! Oo na! Ito naman hindi ma-joke. Oo na, okay? Sa'kin na ang meryenda mo for a week." She sighed in defeat. She accepts Stacey's offer because she realized that she owes her a lot for accompanying her on a daily basis kahit sobrang layo ng nilalamad nila.
Their banter subsided when Jhoanna takes a glimpse of Aiah. Aiah, in her uniform, holding her bag as she graciously walking in the hallway, waves and sweetly smiles at every person that she meets. This sight isn't new for Jhoanna but still is enough to make her heart flutter every single time.
When they reached the canteen, Jhoanna couldn't suppress her smile. The simple glimpse of Aiah made her day a lot better. Seeing Aiah completes her day.
One afternoon, during a campaign rally, Jhoanna found herself secretly volunteering to help Aiah distribute campaign flyers. Jhoanna's plan didn't go in vain because Aiah eventually noticed her.
Jhoanna's eyes widened as she stood on her feet. Napatigil siya sa ginagawa niya't nagpapanic na dahil hindi niya alam kung bakit tinawag ng ate niya Maloi si Aiah out of nowhere. She already is sweating bullets just when Aiah takes a few steps approaching them.
Maloi noticed it and quickly put her hand on Jhoanna's forehead to check if she was sick. "Okay ka lang ba diyan? Bigla ka kasing namumula eh." Maloi asked Jhoanna, her eyes full of concern and affection.
"H-ha? O-okay lang ako, ate. M-mainit lang po ngayon."
Maloi raised her brow. "Ha?" Paanong mainit eh ang lakas ng fan?
"Yes, Mal?" Aiah asked when she reached their place. Her eyes found Jhoanna and she quickly smiled and wave her hand, subtly acknowledging Jhoanna's presence.
Maloi didn't fail to notice how Jhoanna tensed up when Aiah greeted her. Her little sister at heart is already fancying someone.
"Si Jhoanna Christine Robles pala, isa sa mga tumutulong sa pangangampanya ng partylist natin." Nagulat si Jhoanna sa biglaang pagpapakilala ni Maloi sa kanya't nahihiya dahil ginamit nito ang buong pangalan niya.
Aiah, being sweet and friendly as she is, approaced Jhoanna, "So, you are the Jhoanna Christine that Maloi been babling. Nice to meet you, I'm Aiah.” Saka nito nilapit ang isa niyang kamay para makipag handshake.
Jhoanna could only bow for a response and stayed her eyes on Aiah's hand. She is hesitant to do a handshake kasi nafifeel niyang namamasa ang kanyang kamay dahil sa kaba. She gulped, still thinking about what to do next but she didn't want Aiah to feel rude so she immediately rubbed her hands on her clothes and gently did a handshake with her. The polite gesture only lasted for a second but was enough for Jhoanna's heart beat hysterically. Their eyes met briefly, and a jolt, like static electricity, surged through her. Jhoanna quickly looked away, a blush creeping up her neck and her heart hammered against her ribs.
"Thank you sa suporta, really. I swear that your vote will not be wasted though." Aiah says, her eyes full of pride and sincerity.
"Naku, Aiah, huwag kang mag alala kasi winner ka na agad para sa kanya 'yan." Maloi replied and she looks at Jhoanna with a teasing grin. Thankfully, Aiah didn't seem to mind Maloi's words. When Jhoanna took a peek at Aiah, she saw that she was innocently looking at them back and forth.
Aiah tilted her head and asked "Ha?". It made Jhoanna sighed in relief, she smiled sheepishly and replies, "Wala po siyang ibig sabihin doon, ate Aiah. Huwag niyo nalang po siyang pansinin". Sabay suway kay Maloi na tumatawa na.
Aiah nods, "Oh, okay. I'll see you later then? Kailangan ko na kasing umuwi dahil may bisita pa akong naghihintay sa bahay. It was nice meeting you again, Jhoanna."
"So, si Aiah, huh?".
Jhoanna could only hide her face from embarrassment. It isn't because of her crushing on someone but being caught in the act is definitely not good news for her. "Oh, ba't nagtatakip ng mukha ang bebe na 'yan? Nahihiya ka bang nalaman ko kagaad kung sino ang crush mo? Kaya pala sinabi ni Staku na madalas kayong nagmemeryenda sa canteen malapit sa amin ha." Natatawang sambit ni Maloi. Oh yeah, Jhoanna completely forgot na magka course sila ni Aiah.
"Ate Maloi, stoppp." Jhoanna whines and shyly looks at Maloi. "Wala sa bucket list ko ang magka-crush ngayon but it just happened, okay?" She added frustratingly.
"It just happened na sa straight ka nagkaka crush ngayon?". That made Jhoanna stunned. "Oh? Hindi mo alam?" Maloi laughs and patted Jhoanna on her shoulder. "Tsk. Puro lalaki naging ex nun beh. Goodluck nalang sa'yo."
The news hit Jhoanna like a cold wave. Maloi had casually mentioned that Aiah is straight and doesn't do girlfriends. Jhoanna's heart, which had been tentatively fluttering with hope, plummeted. A dull ache settled in her chest, a familiar feeling of longing and disappointment.
"I-its..." Jhoanna's throat suddenly became dry. She sighed in defeat and smiled weakly, "It's okay, ate. Happy crush lang naman." She tried to brush it off, to tell herself it didn't matter. After all, she hadn't confessed her feelings yet.
The news didn't stopped Jhoanna on supporting Aiah and her partylist. As they walked across campus, Jhoanna felt a nervous energy she couldn't explain. She found herself stumbling over her words, her cheeks flushed over their simple interaction. Aiah, oblivious to Jhoanna's internal turmoil, smiled and thanked her, her voice a gentle melody that seemed to soothe Jhoanna's racing heart. Little did Jhoanna know that it wasn't only at this point where her heart goes wild.
The streetlights cast long, eerie shadows as Jhoanna shivered, pulling her coat tighter around her. She had been waiting for her mother for what felt like an eternity.
Suddenly, a familiar figure emerged from the gloom. It was Aiah, her face pale and drawn, her shoulders slumped. The campaign had been grueling, a non-stop marathon of speeches, rallies, and canvassing. Exhaustion gnawed at her, but the adrenaline of the final push was still coursing through her veins. She looked utterly spent and that alarmed Jhoanna.
"Ate Aiah!" Jhoanna exclaimed, relief washing over her. "You look... tired." But still freaking gorgeous, she wanted to add.
Aiah chuckled weakly. "Hi, Jhoanna. Sinong hinihintay mo? Gabi na ah." Tanong ni Aiah in which Jhoanna immediately replies. "Si mama lang, ate, susunduin daw kasi ako."
They fell into step beside each other, the silence comfortable despite their exhaustion. The city lights blurred into a kaleidoscope of colors.
"How are you holding up?" Jhoanna asked, her voice soft.
Aiah sighed. "Honestly, I think I'm running on fumes. But we're almost there. Just a few more days."
Jhoanna nodded in understanding. "You know, I'm really proud of you, ate. You've been incredible these past few weeks." Aiah looked at her, a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes. "Thanks, Jho. But please, enough with the honorifics. It feels weird lang na tinatawag mo akong ate kahit na two years lang ang age gap nation."
Jhoanna tilted her head, slightly puzzled by what she heard. With that thought, she blinks her eyes and withdraw her eyes from Aiah. She feels her cheeks heating up and she's silently thankful that the sun isn't present now.
"Call me Aiah nalang, Jho."
Ay? Aiah lang? I thought… Jhoanna pushed that thought again by shrugging her head. "Pero magkabatch lang kayo ni ate Maloi po. Ang pangjt naman kung ate ang tawag ko sa kanya tapos ikaw..."
Aiah chuckles, "It's okay, Jho, really. Ayaw ko talaga na tinatawag mo akong ate. Noon ko pa sanang gustong sabihin but I don't have the chance to. Ngayon sinasabi ko na, it doesn't sit right when you’re calling me 'ate'. I don't like it."
"But--"
"No buts, Jho. Please?" Aiah pleaded with her voice, leaving no room for argument.
Jhoanna nodded, a shy smile playing on her lips. "O-okay, Aiah".
Aiah immediately smiled when she heard Jhoanna dropped the "ate". She watched her with a mixture of amusement and a touch of something else – a fondness. The thought of dropping the formalities, of their interactions becoming more…personal, sent a flutter of excitement through her.
They again stood there in companionable silence for a few moments, the city lights a comforting backdrop. Then, without warning, Aiah turned to face her. Her eyes, usually so bright, were shadowed with fatigue, but there was a strange intensity to her gaze.
She reached out and gently pulled her into a hug, her touch surprisingly tender. Jhoanna's breath hitched. Her heart pounded against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat echoing in her ears. Jhoanna deeply knew that it was just a casual thing for Aiah. It was just a hug, a fond gesture for a tired friend. Jhoanna knew that it was all that, but even so, she couldn't shrug the thought that Aiah was hugging her. That they were sharing the same space, their hearts beating at the same time, and that it was only them in this exact intimate moment. For Jhoanna, it was enough.
She hugged Aiah back, and didn’t bother to ask questions. Jhoanna just wants to enjoy the moment without distractions. She patted her back gently and she felt that Aiah sighed comfortably.
"Better?” Jhoanna asked later, not breaking the hug and a smile creeping on her lips.
"Yeah," she whispered, her voice rough with exhaustion, "Thank you, Jho."
That night, as Jhoanna lay awake in bed, she realized the truth: she had a crush on Aiah. It wasn't just admiration or respect; it was something deeper, something that stirred a sense of longing within her.
The election results were announced a few days later. Aiah won, and Jhoanna, despite not being actively involved in the campaign, felt a surge of pride. But more than that, she felt a pang of disappointment. The election was over, and the constant proximity to Aiah, the shared experiences, the fleeting moments of connection – they were all over too. During the campaign period hindi maipagkakaila na nagging close sila ni Aiah.
Jhoanna knew she couldn't pursue anything further. Aiah was the Vice President of the student council, a public figure. Their relationship, if it could even be called that, was purely platonic, a fleeting crush born of admiration and a shared space.
But when she saw Aiah, the campus' most popular and charismatic student, announce her candidacy for student president the next year, something stirred within her. Driven by a mix of admiration and a desperate need to be closer to her, Jhoanna made a rash decision: she would run for vice president. After all, her records from the previous years, including her senior high school year greatly put her at an advantage to run for the position. Naranasan niyang maging SSG president for three consecutive years and able to keep a position at the Regional Federation SSG also for three years. With that, she is determined to run given her records and achievements.
The election day arrived, and to Jhoanna's surprise, their unconventional campaign resonated with the student body. She won. Well, not for being a hambog but she is quite sure na mananalo siya. She is confident enough with the title she had and her other engagement on the campus that greatly contributes their university.
The victory celebration was bittersweet. Jhoanna had achieved her goal of being closer to Aiah, but she realized that her feelings for her ran deeper than she initially thought.
Their journey as student leaders began, filled with challenges and unexpected discoveries. But amidst the responsibilities, a genuine friendship, and perhaps something more, blossomed between them. Jhoanna had found a way to get close to Aiah.
Aiah glanced up from her laptop, catching Jhoanna watching her in which stops Jhoanna from her thiughts. "May problema ba?" she asked, a hint of amusement in her voice.
Jhoanna quickly looked away, her cheeks flushing again. "No, wala naman."
Aiah then smiled, a genuine, warm smile that made Jhoanna's heart flutter. "Pero thank you, Jho. Your input has been invaluable too."
Jhoanna felt a surge of warmth spread through her, a feeling that had nothing to do with the rising temperature in the room. She tried to focus on the budget, but her mind kept drifting back to Aiah – her smile, her laugh, the way her eyes were not almost seen when she was happy. Aiah, oblivious to the turmoil in Jhoanna's mind, continued to work, her fingers flying across the keyboard. Jhoanna watched her, mesmerized, her heart pounding against her ribs. She knew it was foolish, this infatuation with her best friend, her leader, her… everything. But Aiah was straight, that much was obvious.
Jhoanna sighed inwardly, pushing the thought away. She needed to focus on the party, on her responsibilities, on everything except her impossible crush.
Aiah, sensing her distraction, closed her laptop and turned to her. "Jhoanna, parang preoccupied ka ata talaga this time. Kinakabahan na ako sa’yo."
Jhoanna forced a smile. "Yes, I'm fine. Just a bit tired, that's all. Huwag ka ng mag alala" She replied, assuring her as she put her attention on her laptop.
Aiah, though still not convinced, nodded understandingly. "We've been working hard. Let's take a break. How about we grab some coffee?"
Well, that offer is not a bad idea. "Sure, coffee sounds good."
They left the office and walked towards the campus coffee shop, the afternoon sun casting long shadows across the courtyard. As they walked, Aiah chatted about her weekend plans, her voice light and carefree. Jhoanna listened, nodding and smiling, trying to keep her composure.
They found a quiet table in the corner of the coffee shop and ordered their drinks. As they waited, Aiah leaned back in her chair, her eyes twinkling. "I didn't know na mahilig ka pala sa matcha? Sa maraming beses ata nating magkasama, ngayon lang kita nakitang nag order ng ganyan". She asked, her finger pointing on the drinks dahil sumaktong dumating na yung drinks na inorder nila. They both bid them thank you's after the waiter handed their order.
She replied and gently take a sip on her drink. Nag iba ang mukha niya pagkatapos niyang tikman ang order. It doesn't have the same taste that she ordered last time. But what did she expect? Nasa ibang cafe sila.
Aiah reached across the table, staring at Jhoanna with an evident grin on her face. "Masarap ba?" She asked, obviously talking about the drink that Jhoanna ordered.
"Hmm, hindi siya gaya nung matcha latte last time. Mas mapait ang timpla nila dito"
"Let me taste it. Hindi ko pa natitikman iyan eh." Aiah replied and quickly get the cup that Jhoanna is holding. Her hand subtly brushing Jhoanna's, enough for the other girl to react hysterically on the inside. Just as she thought that it couldn't get any worst, Aiah gently takes a sip on Jhoanna's drink, making her eyes widen and she swore that she forgot how to breath for a second. "Mapait nga. Not my cup of coffee." Aiah commented, her brows furrowing and she looks displeased with what she tasted.
She looks at Jhoanna and smiled, "Here, try mine naman if you like". Alok niya and she chuckles.
“N-no, hindi rin a-ako mahilig sa taro flavor.”
“Me rin, just wanted to try lang.” Typical Aiah, mahilig talagang mag explore. “At why ka naman nagi-stutter diyan?” natatawa niyang sambit.
Jhoanna wanted to run at that moment, but instead, she just laughs it out. Ayaw niyang magsalita dahil mas lalo lang siyang kakabahan.
Pero gagi ano 'yon? Did she just sip on the same straw that I just put my lips on? Indirect kiss na ba 'yun? Inayos niya ang salamin niya and she bit her lower lip. She quickly put her attention on the table as if it's the most interesting thing to look on to. She couldn't afford to gaze on Aiah.
Jhoanna nodded when Aiah told her that they needed to go back, her mind still reeling from the brief touch, the warmth of Aiah's hand lingering on hers, and the indirect kiss that blew up her mind. She knew she should focus on the party, on their responsibilities, on everything except the impossible hope that had blossomed in her heart. But as she looked at Aiah, her eyes sparkling with excitement, her heart whispered a different story, a story of forbidden desires and impossible dreams.
The days that followed were a whirlwind of activity. Jhoanna and Aiah, along with the other officers and different school organizations spent countless hours together, working tirelessly to make the Acquaintance Party a reality. They met with potential sponsors, finalized the budget, booked the bands, and coordinated with the different departments on campus.
Jhoanna, fueled by a strange mix of adrenaline and nervous energy, threw herself into the work. She meticulously planned every detail, from the decorations and the food to the schedule of events. Aiah, as always, was a guiding light, offering her support and encouragement at every turn.
As the day of the party drew near, the excitement on campus reached a fever pitch. The students were buzzing with anticipation, eager to experience the "Decades Dance." Jhoanna, despite the exhaustion, felt a surge of pride. They had done it. They had created something truly special.
On the day of the party, the campus was transformed. The gymnasium, the venue for the event, was a kaleidoscope of colors and sounds. The 50s diner, complete with checkered tablecloths and jukeboxes, pulsed with the energy of swing music. The 60s lounge, bathed in psychedelic lights, was a haven of peace and love. The 70s disco, with its mirrored ball and flashing lights, was a vibrant explosion of color and sound. The 80s arcade, filled with vintage video games and neon lights, was a haven for nostalgia. And the 90s grunge scene, with its dimly lit stage and live band, was a testament to the spirit of rebellion.
As the first wave of freshmen poured into the gymnasium, Jhoanna and Aiah stood back, watching, their hearts filled with pride. The party was a resounding success. The students were dancing, laughing, and having the time of their lives. The music was loud, the atmosphere electric.
Aiah turned to Jhoanna, her eyes shining. "We did it, Jhoanna. It's perfect." Her voice was loud because of the music.
Jhoanna smiled, her heart overflowing with happiness. "It's more than perfect, Aiah. It's incredible."
They spent the rest of the night mingling with the students, watching them enjoy themselves. Jhoanna, watching Aiah interact with the crowd, her charisma radiating from her like a beacon, felt a pang of longing. She Jhoanna, watching Aiah interact with the crowd, her charisma radiating from her like a beacon, felt a pang of longing. She knew she should be enjoying the moment, reveling in the success of their hard work, but all she could think about was Aiah – her effortless grace, her infectious laughter, the way her eyes crinkled at the corners when she smiled.
As the night wore on, Jhoanna found herself drawn to the 90s grunge scene. The music was loud, the atmosphere was electric, and there was a sense of raw energy that resonated with her. She watched as a group of students, dressed in ripped jeans and band t-shirts, belted out a classic 90s anthem, their voices raw and powerful.
Suddenly, she saw Aiah. She was standing near the stage, watching the performance with a thoughtful expression on her face. She looked so beautiful, so effortlessly cool, that Jhoanna felt a flutter of nerves in her stomach.
Taking a deep breath, Jhoanna decided to approach her. "Enjoying the music?" she asked, her voice a little breathless.
Aiah turned to her, a surprised smile gracing her lips. "Jho! I didn't expect to see you here."
Jhoanna shrugged. "The music's pretty good. And besides," she added with a playful grin, "I need to make sure everyone is having a good time."
Aiah chuckled. "You're always so dedicated, Jho. I don't know what I would do without you."
Jhoanna felt a blush creeping up her neck. "Don't worry, I'm not going anywhere anytime soon."
They stood in silence for a moment, listening to the music. Jhoanna, stealing glances at Aiah, noticed a stray strand of hair falling across her face. She reached out, her fingers brushing against Aiah's cheek, gently tucking the hair behind her ear.
Aiah looked at her, her eyes wide with surprise. Jhoanna, realizing what she had done, quickly pulled her hand away, her cheeks burning. "I… I'm sorry," she stammered, "I didn't mean to…" Aiah, however, didn't seem to mind. She was staring at Jhoanna, her expression unreadable. After a short moment, she spoke.
"It's okay, Jhoanna. Loosen up a bit. You look tense kasi." she said, as she put her arms on Jhoanna's shoulder as if it's the most normal thing to do.
“Jhoanna," Aiah said, her voice casual as they strolled past the brightly lit stage. "tara sayaw?"
Jhoanna, startled, almost choked on her own saliva. "W-what?" she stammered, her cheeks flushing, silently thanking that the area is dim enough to hide her cheeks.
Aiah chuckled, "Doon oh, on the dance floor? There's some music playing tas maganda siya." She gestured towards the lively crowd swaying to the beat.
Jhoanna felt her heart hammering against her ribs. "I-I don't know how to dance," she mumbled, her gaze fixed on the ground.
"Neither do I," Aiah confessed with a grin. "But it doesn't matter, right? We can just have fun with it."
Jhoanna hesitated, her nervousness battling with a sudden surge of excitement. The thought of dancing with Aiah, even if they were both terrible at it, was strangely appealing. "Okay," she finally agreed, her voice barely a whisper.
Aiah beamed. "Great! Let's go."
She offered her her hand, and Jhoanna, feeling a flutter in her stomach, placed her hand in her. As they stepped onto the dance floor, Aiah gave her a reassuring smile. "Just relax," she whispered, "and let the music guide us."
And so, they did. They stumbled and laughed, their clumsy steps a hilarious counterpoint to the smooth moves of the other dancers. But in that moment, surrounded by the music and the laughter, it didn't matter. All that mattered was the feeling of Aiah's hand in hers and the shared joy of simply being together. They moved to the rhythm of the music, their bodies swaying in unison. Jhoanna, lost in the moment, felt a sense of euphoria she had never experienced before. She was close to Aiah, closer than she had ever been, and it felt… right.
Jhoanna knew this happiness was fragile, a delicate bubble waiting to be burst. And she knew who would be the one to burst it.
"Hey!" A very familiar voice suddenly came into their space. Jhoanna exactly knew who it was, but Jhoanna knew that Aiah was the one who knew it very well more than she does. "Looks like someone is having fun." He added as her gaze went to Aiah. His gaze, steady and with a hint of happiness, swept across the room settling on Aiah.
"Gelo! I thought hindi ka na makakapunta?" Aiah replied and gently pulling him for a hug. That scene made Jhoanna looked away.
Gelo, a childhood friend who had always held a special place in Aiah's heart, had been pursuing her with a quiet determination for years. Aiah, with her gentle nature and unwavering loyalty, had never outright rejected him, a kindness that only fueled his persistence. Jhoanna, caught in the sudden shift of the atmosphere, felt a familiar ache in her chest. She knew this moment would come. Gelo, a constant presence in Aiah's life, a familiar comfort in the background of their shared moments. Aiah, with her deep-seated sense of responsibility, would never intentionally hurt him.
"Busy lang sa training but I thought I would come by to check. And by the way, this party is great! You really have a knack when planning on an event." His gaze suddenly shifted to Jhoanna. "Hello, Vice." Jhoanna just smiles and wave her hand.
"Well, hindi lang naman ako nag plano obviously." Aiah replied and gently patted Jhoanna on her shoulder, hinting that she also contributes on this event. That made Jhoanna's heart melt but it doesn't waver the feelings that gnawing in her chest.
Gelo chuckle, "Alam ko naman 'yan. You're the best duo that ever happens in this campus kaya." Aiah then also chuckles and jokingly smacks Gelo on his arm. "Don't flatter us. Why don't you join us to dance instead? Para naman maenjoy mo lalo ang event. The more the merrier na rin."
"I would love to! Can I?" Gelo quickly respond and averted his gaze on Jhoanna, seeking for approval. Jhoanna smiles and nod, "I leave you two nalang, ayaw kong magmukhang third wheel 'no." She jokingly said and forced to laugh.
She silently withdrawn in their presence. Aiah wanted Jhoanna not to leave.
The music continued, but the melody seemed to lose its vibrancy for Jhoanna. Aiah, her smile slightly subdued, acknowledged Gelo with a warm nod. Jhoanna, watching from the periphery, felt a familiar ache in her chest. Aiah's gaze lingered on Gelo, a flicker of something else - perhaps a touch of something, perhaps a lingering affection she couldn't quite shake off - crossing her features.
Bagay na bagay sila.
It was a bittersweet reminder of a love that could never be. But even as she acknowledged the reality of the situation, Jhoanna couldn't deny the impact Aiah had on her. Aiah had shown her that strength and confidence could be beautiful, that intelligence and charisma could be captivating. And most importantly, Aiah had shown her that it was okay to feel, to admire, to be drawn to someone, even if those feelings might never be reciprocated.
“Musta puso ng bebe na ‘yan?” Maloi suddenly pops out of nowhere, settling behind Jhoanna. The latter although slightly surprised at the sudden intrusion, didn’t dare to face the presence behind her.
Maloi, sensing her discomfort simply patted her friend’s shoulder for comfort. Hindi pa nararanasan ni Maloi ang unrequited love but she’s making sure that her presence is always there whenever her friends are experiencing heartbreak. And this time, Jhoanna needed someone for comfort. Jhoanna, whom she considered her sister.
“It’s okay, bebeloves. I’m here.” Maloi said softly, her voice sounded comfort and peace.
Jhoanna sighed in defeat. She pouts, trying hardly to stop the hot liquid preparing to fall in her face. She gently pulled Maloi for a hug in which Maloi gladly obliged.
She sniffs, “Olats na talaga, ate Maloi.”
