The Outside (Rachel Berry)
When Rachel joined Mr. Schuster’s glee club, the ‘New Directions’, she wasn’t entirely sure of what was in store for her.
She didn’t expect what happened. She didn’t expect to be the soloist that everyone threw all the pressure and insults on. She didn’t expect to be the group’s punching bag. She didn’t expect to always be the odd one out.
She had thought that being in a place surrounded by people that loved music as she much as she did would be a perfect experience. She wasn’t expecting the drama, pain, heartbreak, and loneliness.
The only good thing about the club was her friendship with Noah Puckerman. The former bully had become her one confidant through the entire process but that was it.
And their friendship wasn’t well known. After her failed relationship with Finn, the fact that she was friends with his best friend was not something neither she or Noah wanted to broadcast to McKinley’s nosy populace.
Besides Noah, she didn’t have anyone. Even Kurt and Mercedes, people she probably should have been close with because of how similar they were, seemed to despise the ground she walked on.
Everyone hated her and made sure she knew she was an outcast. She was only around so she could keep the club alive with her voice.
Mr. Schue was no help either. All he said was to be less difficult and she would make more friends.
She didn’t want to give up part of her personality so people would like her. Her brashness and perfectionism were a part of her and she refused to.
That refusal hurt though. Every rehearsal she would watch everyone else laughing and having fun and she wished that she wasn’t as strong as she was, so she could sacrifice part of her, so she could join. She wanted to be a part of the group and be accepted because she was Rachel, not the girl they needed to keep the club going.
It wasn’t going to happen. All she could do was hold onto her dreams of making it in New York and finally accomplishing her goals. She would find her acceptance when she a star.
Now all she needed to do was put up with always being on the outside until she was finally on her way.
