Chapter 2

The hand on his shoulder tightened when no response came from Draco. His… mother’s eyebrows furrowed as he continued to stay silent.

“Draco, are you okay dear? What’s wrong?” The worry was laced across her words as she spoke. Almost convincing. Like actors he had seen on stage performances. But something was off about it.

Draco looked away, not wanting to stare at the light gleaming off the black buttons. “Uhm, nothing, but who… who are you?”

A laugh was let out. “Oh silly Draco,” she tenderly moved her hands to cup his face. They were cold to the touch. “Why, I’m your mother. Well, your second mother,” Draco looked back at her, confused.

“Second mother?”

She took away her hands and nodded, “Yes, your second mother. I’m just like your first mum and will always be here to take care of you.”

A small smile made its way onto his face, “You’ll always be here?”

She nodded in response.

The smile on his face lasted a few more seconds before it wilted, “Wait, but I’ve never heard of a second mother before.”

The second Narcissa’s smile dimmed as well, “Well, you see, sometimes the first mother’s tend to hide the second mums away from our kids. We just have more free time to spend with our children and the first mothers get jealous.”

“But luckily for us Draco,” she got onto her knees to look him in the eyes, “You found me. This means that we can play and have as much fun together as you want.”

The small smile that Draco had grew, “Really?! You’ll spend some time with me?” The second Narcissa nodded her head.

“Yes, we can spend as much time together for as long as you want, as long as you stay here. Oh! I almost forgot, I prepared some cookies for your arrival!”

Draco’s eyes widened with excitement, “You made cookies?!”

“Yes I did, and just for you too. Why don’t we go grab a few?” She held out her hand and Draco happily took it.

He giggled as she squeezed his hand and they started to walk down the hallway together.

Draco already liked his other mother.

Narcissa woke up with chills going up and down her body. She quickly sat up with panicked breaths suddenly taking hold of her.

Something was wrong.

She couldn’t explain what, but she felt it in her bones. It felt stronger as she got up and grabbed her wand.

“Narcissa? Is everything alright?”

She looked over to see Lucius turning over in bed to look at her curiously. She must have woken him with her frantic movements.

She quickly shook her head. She shouldn’t disturb Lucius with something as silly as a bad feeling. “It’s nothing dear, I’m just going to fetch myself some tea before going back to bed.”

He nodded, finding her answer acceptable, and went back to his previous position.

Narcissa barely held in her sigh as she turned to leave the bedroom.

The halls were dark, the storm clouds covering the sky left no room for even a flicker of light from the moon to be let in. It was quite an eerie atmosphere and it only fueled her concern of this unknown wrongness.

She patrolled the hallways with her wand lit, glancing out the windows occasionally but spotting nothing. This should have relieved her but it didn’t.

As she continued on, she passed by Draco’s bedroom. The door was tightly shut and everything looked fine.

She put her ear against the door and heard faint breathing. Good, Draco was in his room. She turned and left, the tension keeping her up lessening.

If she had only decided to go the further step and open the door, she would have noticed that what was in the room was not Draco. No, it wasn’t him at all.

After going to the kitchen to get a snack with his second mother, Draco was led to his room. He was pleasantly surprised to find it filled with toys and posters of his favorite quidditch players.

Not only that, but the walls were painted pastel yellow, his favorite color. It apparently didn’t fit the aesthetics the Malfoy manor had, as Narcissa had shot down his suggestion of painting his room the color, saying he was silly for even considering it.

Looking around more, he even saw a mini fort in one of the corners surrounded by stuffed plushies.

“Is this really my room?” He stared at the second mother with disbelief and a hint of hope.

She only looked back down at him, buttons showing no emotion, but a smile dawned her face. “Of course it is, anything for my sunshine.”

Draco grinned and ran around, trying to see if he missed anything.

Second mother slowly made her way back to the door before glancing at Draco, “Why don’t you play for a while before heading off to sleep? I have some… business to attend to. Goodnight dear.”

Turning towards her, he quickly rushed and gave her a hug. “Goodnight, and thank you for the new room.”

“Oh it’s no problem. There’s nothing I wouldn’t ever give you, my son,” she then detached him from herself and left.

Watching her go, he suddenly grew tired. It would be best if he slept. He could always continue his fun in the morning.
—————————————————————

By the time he got up, the sun had already risen.

Draco scrambled out of bed and looked at the clock next to his door. Ten-fifteen. Oh no. He hoped his mother- well, second mother, wasn’t mad.

He hurriedly put on his clothes and rushed to the dining hall. There he found the second Narcissa, and sitting right next to her was his father. Who also happened to have button eyes.

The buttoned eyes disturbed him.

“I- um, sorry I’m late.”

His father only smiled, shocking Draco, and his mother patted the seat next to her.

“Oh it’s alright Draco, you can sleep in as long as you like. Now that you’re awake though, come and have breakfast.”

He hesitantly pulled out the seat and sat down.

The breakfast prepared was all of his favorites. Honey toast, sweet tea, fluffy pancakes, and many other things were scattered across the table.

Draco stared at the plates in astonishment, “Oh wow, I haven’t had these in a long while. Thank you for ordering the house elves to make these, second mother!”

“Oh silly, I made these myself,” his other mother said as she reached out and prepared Draco a plate. She shoveled a variety of food onto it, almost filling the plate to the brim, disregarding the usual etiquette that Draco’s real mother would always show.

He was quickly distracted from the lack of table etiquette by the words that were just spoken, “You cooked all this?! But why? We have house elves, and you hate getting your hands dirty-“

“Oh Draco, you’re thinking of that mother you’ve lived with until now. While I’m similar to her in many ways, we are different. I don’t mind cooking food as long as you, my son, enjoy it. Any loving mother wouldn’t mind,” A smile took over her face and she tilted her head, “Why don’t you go ahead and start eating?”

Draco shook off his astonishment and nodded. He began to neatly cut a large pancaked that filled up most of the plate.

The syrup was sweet. Too sweet. There was so much of it that it was drowning out the taste of the spongey cake.

But when would Draco have the chance to eat food cooked by his mother again? Regardless if this mother wasn’t his real mother.

But wasn’t she?

She said that she was his other mother, so didn’t that count as his real mum?

Draco pushed all thoughts aside and continued to eat.
