The Repercussions.
It had been a month since the devastating mass-murder of fourteen people. The police had investigated the crime scene, and concluded that-
Well, they never actually came to a conclusion.
See, all the police in this small town were nothing but lazy. They would frequently drop cases if seen as 'too difficult' or 'too confusing'. All, except for three, that is.
It was a cold- but bright- morning and two police officers were finishing clearing out a crime scene. One was a tall, twenty-five-year-old woman whose black afro hair was in a high bun, and she was wearing a short-sleeved red jumper with a white cropped shirt over the top and a pair of split black and blue denim jeans. Next to her was a twenty-year-old man, a foot shorter than her, wearing a salmon-pink hoodie, blue jeans, and a grey denim jacket. His hair was a light brown and swept to the side. Also, around his neck was a small gold necklace with the letter M on.
"Hurry up, Adanna. We don't have all day here," the man said. His voice was emotionless and stern, but the happy woman, Adanna, cheerily skipped towards him despite his attitude.
"I know! Just double checking everything, Mateo. Besides, Omar said we need to be thorough with the inspections!" she happily replied.
"Omar said this, Omar said that!" the man, Mateo, retorted in a high-pitched voice, mocking her, "Just get a move on, okay?"
Mateo sat in a car outside of a large, one-story house. He had his hands on the wheel, ready to drive away as soon as possible; he was restless and wanted to leave. On the other hand, Adanna was taking a long time on purpose. She meant no harm, but she wanted to make sure she didn't miss anything.
"Do you not think we can take another look?" Adanna pleaded, stood next to the car. She thought he would be understanding, however Mateo looked furious.
"For fuck's sake Adanna, I'm not going back in there, okay? My dead fucking sister is in there! I don't wanna have to see her headless corpse ever again, nor do I wanna see m- Seungho's corpse either! Did you forget he was in there, too? Look, Adanna, take all the time you need or whatever, but don't you think you could be a bit more considerate? We've already checked this place over, like, twice! And the other day we did, too!" he yelled angrily at her. Understandably, Mateo was mad. Adanna relaxed her face, lowering her eyebrows and eyelids and restoring her smile into a frown.
Without a word, she opened the car door and sat down. Mateo started the engine and began to drive away from the house.
Soon after they left, a person dressed in all black walked up to the house. They broke the door open and strode in. After looking around, the figure stood in the centre of the house, next to the corpse of a tall blond man dressed in yellow and blue. They took a small lighter out of their pocket, lit it, and dropped it on the floor beneath them. The wooden floorboards lit ablaze, fire consuming everything in the area. Dashing out the house, the person slammed the door behind them and continued running away. They turned the street corner and were completely out of sight. Smoke billowed out the top of the house as a fire truck raced down the street. See, the house was not too far away from the fire station (only a street away) and Mateo and Adanna managed to see the smoke pretty quickly, meaning they told the fire department as soon as possible. The house continued to smoke and flame, burning away the wooden framework of the house. Surprisingly, due to the speed of the firefighters, not many corpses even got damaged by the fire, leaving enough evidence for the police to come back and finish up their reports. Overall, the person's mission was a complete failure.
"Are you serious? What were you thinking?"
A woman's voice shot through a phone in a house many streets away from the house that had just been lit on fire. A black-haired girl stood in front of a home telephone on top of a tall wooden table. She was on the phone to another girl who lived a few streets near.
"I don't know, I wasn't thinking at all! It was an impulsive decision," the girl responded frantically, "Wait, how can you even see it?"
"The smoke is everywhere! I can see it out my window, it's just a tall- oh, it's all gone now," the girl on the phone shouted.
The black-haired girl put her hands on her hips and replied, "Yeah, well, I wasn't even expecting it to work in the first place. I mean, come on! What would setting it on fire even do? Burn all the corpses the police have already seen and photographed, right? In a way, it was fun though. I'd say it was worth it."
"Fair enough, but what are you gonna do now? Who knows, the police probably already suspect you. They'll probably come to your house next, and arrest you."
"No, they won't. They wouldn't suspect me. There's no evidence left!" the girl responded.
"Yes there is! Remember, all the journals you gave everyone! Some will have your name in. Especially that blond guy, Jackson. The one you were being all lovey-dovey with."
"Don't be ridiculous! I was NOT being 'lovey-dovey' with him! And besides, I swear he's gay."
"Whatever you say! Anyway, have a good night, I'm going to bed, OK? Love you!"
She didn't say it back. The girl with the phone in her hand hung up before she could. She walked up her staircase, muttering to herself. After entering her bedroom, she closed the door behind her and jumped onto her light purple bed.
Her thoughts ran through her head like bullets. What could she do?
What would she do?
