This just in, goblins hate demigods

Nico and Will descended the stairs, Nico rubbing his eyes with a tired look on his face. If they were a little later than an hour, Hecate didn’t mention it, only smiled and set down her mug. “Ready lovebirds?”

Will responded for them both with an eager, “Let’s go!” and Hecate stood up. The man, Tom, was sitting across from the goddess, smiling as Hecate led them to a wall on the far side of the pub.

“Have fun!” The funny man waved and Nico watched Hecate as she tapped a finger against a brick three times only to jump back a little when it wriggled and then split. The two demigods staring in awe as an archway stretched out before them, a bustling little alley through it.

Grabbing Nico’s hand, Will immediately started dragging him to each of the little shops’ front windows as Hecate trailed behind them, Nico flipping his sunglasses over his eyes. He and Hecate watched as the Son of Apollo eagerly went from shop to shop like a golden retriever and peered into each, speaking quickly to Nico about what he saw. There were cauldrons, an Apothecary, and two shops that caught Nico’s eye: an owl shop and something looking like a fancy broom sitting in a window with little kids ogling at it. The two demigods looked at the broom, struggling to read the sign beside it before Hecate stepped in.

“That’s the Firebolt, one of their greatest broomsticks to date.” Nico looked at her confused.

“A broomstick? What’s so good about it? Does it sweep by itself or-“

“No silly. They ride their broomsticks of course,” Hecate said quite deadpanned and Nico couldn’t tell if she was joking or not. Wracking his new memories, he couldn’t source anything having to do with broomsticks. He turned to Will who just gave him a just as confused look. “I put five years worth of textbook readings into your brains and there was nothing about Quidditch?” Nico had to stop himself from bursting out in a laugh.

Those wizards and their funky names.

Pinching the bridge of her nose, the goddess just walked away so the two followed, passing even more shops selling more wizardy things like robes, wands, potion ingredients, spell books, quills, and potions.

An elbow in his side pulled Will from his glancing around and he saw Nico had stopped walking, pointing to something. “Look! Look how cool that is!” He was pointing to a shop that sold astronomy equipment and was looking specifically at a beautiful model of the solar system that glittered softly. He was pushing his hand into his chest, a motion Will recognized as Nico’s “too excited to express it” hand flapping being suppressed. “I’m gonna get it,” Will heard him whisper and he grinned to the Son of Hades.

“Oh fuck yeah Neeks. We’re definitely going in that store.” The raven looked at him with sparkling eyes and the two shared a quick laugh before catching up with Hecate who had mysteriously not walked more than a couple feet.

“Sorry Miss Hecate. I saw something cool,” Nico said. “Where’re we going now?”

“We’re going to pull some money from the Wizarding bank and then you two can go shopping to your hearts’ content.” She stopped in front of a large white building that seemed to be the center of the alley way just because of its sheer height. At the top of the steps next to the open, large bronze doors, standing quite short compared to the trio, was a pointy nosed goblin that glared at Nico as if he felt personally offended by the demigod’s presence.

“Welcome Miss Hecate. Here with your demigods I presume?” He sneered “demigods” as if it were a foul taste on his tongue.

Hecate, without missing a beat, leaned down to the goblin’s level and whispered something to him that made him go pale.

“Yes. Sorry Miss. Come on in.” The goblin beckoned for the trio to enter and they did, Nico unconsciously grabbing Will’s hand as many goblins turned their heads to them. They were seated at high tables along the sides of the long room, frowning down at them. They had all paused what they were doing, weighing coins or scribbling down something with a long feather quill.

It was quite awkward.

Hecate cleared her throat in front of one of the goblins who looked to her and frowned. “Ms. Hecate. Welcome. Your key?” Hecate nudged Nico’s shoulder and he fumbled in his pockets, pulling out the key and handing it to the goblin. The goblin looked it over and nodded, beckoning the trio to a doorway that led off the main room. It was a weird, stone hall lit with torches barely lighting it and at the end was an old, rusty track. Will was gripping onto Nico’s arm, leaning close to him, the raven busy stuffing his sunglasses in the black bag that hung off his shoulder.

The goblin whistled and the two turned to see a small cart rattling it’s way up. All three of them were ushered into the cart, the goblin climbing after them. The ride was… awakening to say the least.

They were jerked around as the cart hurtled down the tracks so fast, Will clutching onto his boyfriend and screaming in shock. Glancing at him, Will swore he could see a little sparkle in Nico’s eyes as cold wind rushed past them. The cart went every which way with seemingly no direction until it jerked to a stop, Will yelping and falling back in the cart.

“Vault 13. Please exit the cart.” The goblin hopped out and placed a hand on the old metal door, and slid the key into the lock. Nico clambered out and helped Will down, the Son of Apollo looking a little dazed.

“ Tesoro , are you okay?” Nico murmured into his ear, letting him lean against his shoulder.

“Mhm. Just dizzy.” The goblin unlocked the door and pushed it in, both demigods peering over him to look into the vault. There were stacks upon stacks and piles of gold, copper, and silver coins surrounding the room and a small, wooden box in the center, maybe a foot long and half a foot wide. Nico looked back to Hecate, who handed him a small brown sack and gave him a little nod, before he pulled Will into the vault and made his way to the little box. “What do you think’s in it?” There was a small piece of paper taped to the top of it so Nico leaned down and flipped it over, noticing his father’s neat handwriting.

Nico and Will,

Please accept these gifts from me, Apollo, and Hephaestus. Be safe you two.

-Dad

“Damn Neeks. I still can’t believe you and your dad are so casual with each other,” Will spoke from over Nico’s shoulder. “What’s in the box?” With the Son of Apollo gingerly hanging off his shoulder, Nico carefully tucked the note from his father into his pocket and reached for the box’s lid. He pulled it up and squinted at what was inside: a golden necklace with a little golden sword pendant and another matching necklace, silver, with a small silver circlet as it’s pendant.

“Huh?” Nico raised his eyebrows, glancing at Will who looked equally as confused.

“Well… I’m guessing the little crown is for you,” Will murmured as Nico picked up the one with the sword.

“Then this one’s for you!” Nico grinned, pulling the one with the golden sword out and holding it up for Will.

“I don’t get why though. You know fighting isn’t my thing.”

“I’ll help you put it on.” Will reluctantly stood up straight as Nico unclasped the necklace and laid it on his collarbones, moving around back of him to secure it. “It looks good on you!” Nico was grinning and suddenly Will went wide eyed.

“I… I feel stronger.” Will gently touched the pendant and gasped, a soft light momentarily blinding the two before a large, golden sword, one that looked like the pendant, appeared in his hand. Nico swore there was a golden glimmer in his boyfriend’s eyes.

“Holy shit. Will, that’s Apollo’s golden sword!” Will wrinkled his nose, eyes scanning over the metal as if scrutinizing it. “It’s made with Imperial Gold and was the second weapon ever made of that metal! It’s super super rare!” Nico caught sight of Will’s still confused look and shrugged. “What? Reyna and I had a lot of time to talk. Imperial Gold is a Roman thing so I think it’s pretty weird that Greek Apollo gave it to you but…” Will pressed the butt of his new sword to the chain around his neck and it shrunk back down to the little golden pendant. “That’s really cool.”

Nico reached back into the box and picked up the necklace for him and held it in front of his eyes, spinning it slowly to look at it from all angles. “What is it?” Will asked, moving to hang loosely off of his boyfriend’s shoulder again.

“I… it looks kind of like the Crown of Darkness.” Nico’s eyes were gleaming, a little pinprick of purple light gleaming in the inky darkness. The corners of his lips twitched as he resisted the urge to smile. “It’s almost a mirror to my father’s helm but minus the fear and foreboding feelings people near it get. Persephone had it until now.” He slipped it around his neck and gently touched the pendant, a larger version of the circlet, made of deep black metal, appearing in his fingertips. Will watched him curiously as he slipped it past his bangs and set it against his forehead, a dark shadow engulfing the metal before it disappeared. Nico’s eyes shone that soft purple color and he grinned, facing Will. “I feel stronger too,” he stated simply, hand reaching up to touch his forehead where the circlet was sat.

Will glanced back at Hecate and the goblin, the goblin giving him such a loving scowl with a beckoning finger. “C’mon. We can explore them later. That goblin’s gonna murk us if we don’t hurry.” Will couldn’t help but smile at the little laugh Nico let out. He held up the bag Hecate gave him and started to grab stacks of coins, Will following suit and discarding handfuls in the bag. When Nico decided they must’ve had enough, he pulled the strings to close it and slipped it into his bag. They moved to leave the vault when Nico’s eyes ghosted over the box that had contained their necklaces. He quickly scooped it up, clutching it to his chest even as they hurtled their way back up to the surface.

Will took the second cart ride much easier, only looking a tad paler and much less dizzy.

The goblin shooed the trio all the way through the tunnel and out the doors of the bank, giving Hecate a half-assed bow before turning away and marching himself back inside. The demigods blinked at her, the goddess sighing heavily. “Those disrespectful little twats. Anyways.” She waved her hand and a wand appeared in her hand, a deep color with swirls of pale white running up it’s sides. “Nico, can I see your bag?”

Nico stared at her for a moment, pulled out his sunglasses, and pulled the bag over his head, handing it to her. Hecate held it in her palm and tapped it with the tip of her wand, handing it back after a second. “What did that do?”

Hecate waved her hand again and the wand disappeared. “Made it’s carrying capacity endless. An infinite bag basically.” Nico raised an eyebrow and looked into it, slipping his sunglasses back on before shoving the wooden box into it.

Will did admit silently that it was funny to see Nico stick the corner of the box into the much smaller bag and then watch as the bag’s opening swallowed it up. It was even funnier to see Nico grabbing the edges of his bag, a bewildered look on his face as he tried to stick his head in it.

“Neeks-“ Hecate shushed him, giggling as Nico frowned and huffed when he couldn’t push himself in it like he did the box.

“Now that that’s taken care of, Nico, Will, I will let you roam free here.” She held out a few papers to Nico who took them curiously. “There is a map of this and Knockturn Alley and the lists of books and objects you’ll need to buy. Just summon me if you need any help okay? At 2000 please make sure you’re back at the Leaky Cauldron. You’re free to eat anywhere and do anything else. Any questions?” Nico and Will turned to each other and shook their heads in unison, Will grasping for the raven’s hand. “Good! I will see you two around 0430 tomorrow.” With that, she disappeared: no smoke or anything just popped out of existence.

Nico chirped out a barely audible, “cool.” And shook out the papers in his hand, looking down at the map. “What to start at the end of the alley?”

“Sounds like a plan sunshine.”
