Once, Neferata had been bold enough to rule kingdoms directly—though likely she could never as she is now, not without people knowing her for what she is. She is still as beautiful as she always was, no lines of age on her face or grey in her hair—though perhaps Khalida, who never had the chance to grow old, is not the one to judge that.
So her cousin plays with kingdoms indirectly, setting herself up behind the throne so there will be no second Khalida, no one to see the beautiful, unaging, undying parasite—and so Khalida will always return to her to burn down every kingdom she builds, to have the justice and vengeance she was denied and her goddess demands, to bring the woman she hates with a fury born of love to join her in a far truer death than the half-life she plays at.
