Hermann spends some time considering what to serve her captain first—she is quite aware that Ahab has been on the edge of starvation for some three years now, the question is what to do with it. If she wanted to, she knows that the captain would eat of rich food and poison herself—but she concludes against that(she has just put her back together, after all) and serves her something she can digest.
She can see a little war in Ahab's eyes, whether to give in to her hunger or to keep her pride and not show any desperation—she can't keep her eyes off the food, and eats ravenously once she gives in to her appetite, like a wild animal(Hermann sees her sneaking crusts of bread into her uniform coat, and pretends she doesn't). The effect, overall, is rather like bringing in a wild animal—or, at best, half-tamed—to the dinner table, but this is certainly an intriguing beast, and one Hermann quite enjoys having on her leash.
