Outis thinks: perhaps they're a family, to the man whose definition of a family was a house he was never welcome in and a storm of cruelties or to the woman whose life before she went to the Lethe was spent playing house with monsters, but to her they are something different. She sees the secrets Faust keeps, the way Rodion keeps her poker smile, the way Sinclair(that all of them) see ghosts that aren't there in the others, the way that some jokes make Gregor flinch or wince but he never sees everything.
They aren't family, not to her-they're more than they were at the beginning, true, in that she now holds some respect for them(though she still doesn't trust any of them, even those whose minds she's seen inside), but they are not her family.
