The Birds are Singing (Sans POV)
After releasing the kiddo Toriel immediately grabbed Sans and started shaking him asking where her child was.
“I send them where they told me to, to the village.” Sans shrugged, trying to not look Toriel in the eye. She was really terrifying when she gets into Mama-goat mode.
“San’s why would you do that, Flowey just told us how dangerous it was, the village was under attack and you just sent my child into the middle of that.” She was getting hysterical and without the funny. Sans did not really know what to tell her, not that she would believe him anyways. How could he tell her that her child also had the ability to be ruthless at a glance, that the reality she lived through was just one of the many that the child could make on a dime. How could he tell her that her child was terrifying and not in the way that normal people would find scary, no. Sans found them terrifying in the way that you could have everything that you ever wanted, and you could be living you’re best life, and then suddenly because a child was bored it would be ripped away from you and you would be stuck back in that prison cave and you would go through you’re life again and again and again. Sometimes you would watch everyone you love and knew die due to the will of a true monster, sometimes it was only a few, but sometimes - when the child was being extra cruel it would play through a peaceful route and make friends with everyone all over again and then save them, and have them take them, but would rip it away the next day.
How could Sans tell the mother of what is practically a fucking GOD, that he was scared of her child so much so that he stopped hesitating when the child asked for anything because he didn’t want to have them be bored, or scared, or lonely. That to keep the child entertained and to keep them all above the surface he made sure that they wouldn’t walk away that last time. How he started talking to the child, and entertaining them, and making them laugh to keep his brother alive. That he went back to the Underground and ripped a flower up by its roots when that child started missing them, just so that they wouldn’t sent them all back for a fucking visit.
If he tells her all of that, does he tell her that when the child hugged that pot and the flower started complaining, but let the child hug him and laugh and spin that he felt something close to peace for the first time. Does he tell her that his soul felt lighter after the child started smiling and running up to him in greeting. Should he tell her that somewhere along the way the ruse stopped being a ruse and he actually came to love the kid? Would she believe him if other than being his best friend, Frisk was also like a child to him and that he would do anything to keep them happy? That instead of doing what they asked because they were a god, he started doing it because he trusted them fully and completely. Would any of it matter to Toriel because in her eyes he just sent her child into a war, unprepared and alone. He didn’t know, and honestly he was too tired to put up a fight.
Frisk, if that was Frisk - and he was secretly starting to believe that it was- was being to lower his defenses back to where they were before they died. Shame, he didn’t last as long this time. Then again, he missed that little ball of chaos and determination.
“Look, I’ll take you to them, you’ll see Frisk will be fine. Besides they got us out of that building and they fought the fucking military to do it.” Sans argued, as he removed Toriel’s hands from his jacket. It was a little bit more forcefully than he intended, but he wasn’t really in a good mind set at the moment, both Papyrus and Frisk might be in the middle of a war zone, and he was up here, so excuse him for not being nice to the Queen for one day.
“Flowey, go to Frisk.” The flower nodded and sunk back into the Earth, hopefully whatever method he uses for travel is fast enough to catch up to Frisk if they need back up. Though he had a feeling that Frisk wouldn’t need it as much as he thought. If that demon was really still hanging around. He turned to Toriel and the Headmaster of the school. Now here was the predicament, because Sans did not trust the sparkly eyed man. He was not passing the Judge’s Vibe Test, and he was all together hesitant to have the man around Frisk in general. Still he didn’t think that he was going to get away with just bringing Toriel. She might argue for him to come. So he sighed and sucked it up and held out a hand to both of them. He heard the Headmaster call a order to one of the other teacher’s but he ignored it and teleported them. They handed on the hill where he sent Frisk.
“Where is my child, Sans?” Toriel demanded, and Sans sighed.
“This is where I send the kid, gave them plenty of time to come up with a plan or something or come back, but knowing Frisk they must have run into the battle as soon as they landed.” He grumbled that last bit, but Toriel’s face dropped in shock so she must have heard it, or she was just imagining her ‘Precious angel’ running into a battle field. Sans found her protectiveness a bit ironic, but didn’t say anything out loud. After all, wasn’t she the one who almost burnt the kid into a crisp on the first meeting? Still he didn’t want to give up his one life point so he kept his teeth shut. Hehehe.
“Maybe we should head Hogsmead?” the Headmaster offered, and Sans felt a little defensive about that, but with Toriel agreeing and both of them walking ahead of him, he didn’t really get a say. Still he wasn’t sure if he should allow that man around Frisk, especially when their fighting. He would keep an eye on that man.
They ended up running to the village, which Sans hated but relented because, emergency. When they got close enough to see the scene he was almost shocked by what he was witnessing. He could tell that Toriel was as well. The headmaster though… yeah Sans didn’t like that look. Still it was difficult to watch the man when he could barely take his eyes off the kid.
Frisk was tearing through the humans. They had managed to make a boss field of their own, it was rudimentary and not as complete as some of the others that he had seen, but Frisk wasn’t a monster so it was impressive none the less. Still, the way they were rushing through the humans, it was almost as if they were looking for something. Frisk grabbed something and threw it behind them, and it was then that he noticed that they were making a nice little pile of souls at the edge of the border, and in the middle gulping them down was Flowey.
“Well I’ll be damned.” came out of him before he could stop it. Both Toriel and the Headmaster turned to him, and he sighed. This was going to be annoying to explain. “Frisk knows that they can’t take all of the humans on alone, especially not if there are two of those groups attacking so they’re getting backup. From the only Monster that’s strong enough to handle that many targets all at once.” Still Omega Flowey was strong, but Frisk only needed six or so souls to give to him, why were they still hunting? He watched them for a little while longer, and then when he saw a bright red soul go flying across the battle field he understood. “Though it seems like Frisk isn’t happy with having just a boss, nah they have to go and summon a god.”
He didn’t remember the fight that Frisk had during what they call the Mercy routes. He was kind of in a mind place. He remembered somethings like the feeling of his soul being drained, or flashes of rainbows and something white, but they had told him stories of Asriel. The god that is only summoned with pure strength from the boss monsters. Who is also supposedly Toriel’s son. Frisk had told him after he asked why Flowey was so important to the kid considering he tried to kill all of them. He would always remember what they said in response. It was one of the few times he had heard them speak.
“Well, what would you do if you were a kid, and all you wanted was to feel you’re mama’s hugs again?”
He truly thought there was more too it than that, but that’s all that Frisk said and he wasn’t about to go and ask that flower. Sans knew how to hold a grudge after all. Still there might have been something to the story as Toriel gasped when the change started to take hold and instead of Omega Flowey showing up, it was a smaller white goat in a green sweater, holding two blades in both hands.
“Asriel,” she gasped and then fell to her knees. Sans didn’t move to catch her despite wanting to, no right now Toriel wasn’t in the right mind frame to be touched, and one wrong move would send him to an early grave. She got fire happy when in distressed states of being, and comfort only made it worse most of the time. Sans moved his eyes and watched as Flowey - no Asriel - moved to switch places with Frisk and Frisk started moving through the other group of people.
Sans’ eyes narrowed, what were they doing now? His eyes widened when a thought came to him, a truly disastrous idea. They wouldn’t. Then it seemed like something caught Frisk’s eye and they darted towards one person in particular, and Sans’ idea was pretty much confirmed. Damn that kid.
Without another word Sans started running down the rest of the way. That kid was going to release that demon weren’t they? If Sans had hair, he would be balding with how much stress that kid puts him through. He had finally managed to get to the bottom of the kill and on top of the barrier when his worst fears were realized and another body joined the two fighting. This one was a human. Who looked similar to what Frisk used to look like, wearing the same green sweater as Asriel. Chara.
Sans wanted to attack the demon child right then and there. Sans wanted to scream at the unfairness and stomp around like the child that he pretended to be in order to get out of work. He wanted to march down there and shake Frisk and ask them, what they were thinking releasing that monster onto the world. Didn’t they remember how they tricked them into murdering everyone they ever loved, didn’t they remember how they got trapped watching from inside their body as that monster killed them all over again, but on the surface this time when they tried to make up for what they did? Why on Earth would they release the monster? Still he didn’t do any of that because Frisk was in the middle of a fight. He didn’t do any of that because they needed all the help that they could get, and he didn’t want to endanger them. Even when they were being stupid he loved them. It was a curse, honestly. He was still going to ground them when this was over. Frisk knows that they’re not supposed to summon gods and demons without supervision.
He stayed on top of the barrier and watched the fight. The trio seemed like they had it handled for the most part, but Frisk was still in charge of the boss arena and from the way it was starting to destabilize, they didn’t have enough practice or control to sustain it enough to get rid of every enemy of the field right now.
He ended up being right when a spell clipped Frisk in the side and they went flying into the barrier itself, making it break, another spell was sent their way and this one was red. Sans noticed this because the spell caused Frisk to start screaming. He watched as they writhed with pain for a moment, and he didn’t know what came over him. Everything just kid of slowed for a moment. He didn’t notice when Toriel joined him on top of the barrier. He didn’t hear all the voices calling out Frisk’s name. He didn’t even notice when Chara slit the bitches throat that was causing Frisk to scream, and then the screams stopped. All he knew was that he suddenly felt a burning rage that he had only felt once before.
It was like his body moved on it’s own and suddenly a new barrier was erected in place of Frisk’s old one, but in this one the soul’s didn’t need to have their silly weapons, or their spells. He watched from outside as his own body made it’s way into the arena, and then Gaster Blasters started forming. He stared at the souls that were floating around before him in a panic, they didn’t know what was going on obviously, if they knew then they may not have been dumb enough to hurt his kid. Still, humans were known for being stupid and violent, so whose to say if they still would have done something do dumb.
The Gaster blasters went off and some of the souls managed to dodge out of the way. He ground his teeth in annoyance. A slash went towards him, but he dodged it. Still part of him was happy that not all of them died, now he had something to take his frustrations out on, and he had a lot of them. So get ready humans, it’s time to be judged.
