Out of Breath

Remus was sprawled on the ice, staring at the ceiling as it appeared to spin uncontrollably, “I think I need to sit down.” He managed to mumble out, squeezing his eyes shut in an effort to slow the spinning. Gentle hands helped him into a seated position, moving him against the boards before helping him to take his helmet off.

It hadn’t even been a hard hit. They were just having a scrimmage at practice, which had been going well. Remus was taking the puck across the ice when Finn came in from the side, hitting him into the boards.

He hadn’t been expecting it, didn’t even see Finn till the last minute. Remus isn’t sure how long he’d been laying on the ice; his body felt tingly with the cold of the ice.

“What can I do, mon loup? Talk to me.” A soft voice said from next to him. Sirius.

Remus started to shake his head before realizing how dizzy that made him, “I feel like I can’t breathe.” He whispered, letting out a shaky gasp.

A conversation happened in rapid french, too quick for Remus’s brain to translate before he heard someone skate away. He let out a soft whine, eyes flickering open as he reached out for Sirius’s hand, who quickly intertwined their fingers, “I’m right here, Re. Not going anywhere. I think you just had the wind knocked out of you, and that freaked you out, yeah?” He asked, and Remus squeezed his hand in agreeance. “I sent Leo to go get you some water, he’ll be right back and then I want you to sip it. Slowly.”

Remus nodded, resting his head back on the boards, “‘m sorry.” He mumbled softly, his eyes going up to the ceiling, which had luckily stopped spinning.

Sirius was shaking his head before Remus had even finished the apology, but it was Leo who had answered, “There’s nothing to apologize for, Loops. It’s happened to all of us.” He said, holding the open water bottle out.

Remus smiled, albeit a little shaky, “Thanks, Nut.” He said before taking a sip of water. It seemed to help, the clenching feeling around his chest dissipating as he finally caught his breath.

Finn skated over, biting his lip nervously, “Fuck, Loops, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have hit you that hard. Are you okay? Do you need anything?”

Remus shook his head up at the redhead, smiling softly, “I’m fine, Finn. Promise. You’re just too quick, I didn’t even notice you. But I’m good, gonna go sit for awhile.”

“Let’s get you on the bench, it’d probably be a good idea for Hestia to look you over, non?” Sirius asked, running a gentle hand through his boyfriend’s hair.

Letting out a soft sigh, Remus nodded, “Yeah, probably. Not like she’d let me leave without seeing her anyways.” With Sirius and Leo on either side of him, Remus made his way to the bench.

Coach Weasley patted his shoulder as Remus sat down next to him, “Good, Loops?”

Remus took another sip of his water as he nodded, “‘m good, Coach.”

His team had his back. And Remus had theirs.

He was good.
