Dads

Sirius was at work while Remus was watching Harry. They both agreed that while Harry was younger, Remus wouldn't have a job and would watch Harry. Sirius, of course, made sure that was exactly what Remus wanted but was reassured with a soft kiss to the lips and a whispered 'I promise'

Now, they were eating the lunch Remus made for them. It was 3 months after James and Lily died and Harry was only 1 year old and 18 months old and it was the month of January. Harry had been calling Sirius 'Paddy' and Remus 'Moony' just like he had when James and Lily were alive.

Remus made himself a grilled cheese while Harry was eating Bananas and yogurt. Remus looked over to Harry and a soft chuckle escaped his mouth when he saw the yogurt all over his face. "Do you like your food, cub?"

Harry gave a toothy grin, "Real good Moony! Thank you!"

Remus smiled back at him, "You're welcome Harry. That's very polite of you."

Harry nodded seriously, "Moony and Padfoot always say be polite, and Harry always listens to his daddies."

Remus choked on his sandwich, "What did you say, Harry?"

Harry tilted his head, "Moony and Pad-"

Remus shook his head, "No, no, the last part Harry."

"Oh!" Harry smiled knowingly, "I always listen to my daddies!"

Remus looked in Harry's eyes before looking somewhere, anywhere else, "You think me and Padfoot are your dad's Harry?"

Harry looked sad all of a sudden, "No...?"

Remus stood up and hugged him, "It- it's ok to think that Harry. I-I was just surprised that's all. I'm not mad, not at all."

Harry hugged him back, "Then why yur eyes get all wet?"

"It's ok Harry, everything's alright." Remus didn't answer his question.

Sirius came back to work at the same time he did every day but he knew something was off. Nothing looked different, he didn't hear Harry since he was down for a nap. But Remus didn't come and greet him, and his Moony always greeted him.

Sirius ran to their shared room in a panic, wondering if it had something to do with the full moon coming up. But with the sight that greeted him, he knew it was something way worse.

Remus was curled up in the corner of their queen-sized bed and wrapped in a blanket. The lights were dimmed to the point of almost off. Remus's eyes were squeezed shut and had tear lines running down his face.

Sirus stared, shocked at his boyfriend. The only times Remus looked this hurt was when it involved-

Sirius raced over to the bed and brought Remus to his chest rocking back and forth humming softly and muttering softly, "It's alright Remy. It'll be ok. I'm here."

Remus wasn't crying but he wasn't all there. He was lost in memories.

"Come back to Remy, come back to me, love. I'm right here, I won't leave you. Ever,"

Slowly, but surely, Remus was brought out of the past and back to Sirius.

Sirius didn't talk or ask questions. He just continued his rocking and humming waiting for Remus to talk to him if he wanted. He only wanted to know if Remus wanted to share.

"He thinks of us as dads."

"What was that, love?"

Remus removed himself from Sirius's hold and looked him in the face, "He thinks of us as his dads Siri. That should be James's job, not ours. You should be the cool uncle and I should be the sneaky one. We should just be Moony and Padfoot, not Dad."

Sirius brought Remus back to his chest and hushed him, "You're right Moony. That should be James's job, not ours. We shouldn't have to raise Harry as if he is our child. That should Lily and James's job, not ours. But it isn't and we are. Harry is our son now and I'll be damned if we aren't the best parents he will ever have."

Remus sniffled, "But Lily and James should be the best parents he would ever have. Not us."

"But it can't happen. And- and we have to do our best in their place. Do what they wanted but- but can't." His voice choked at the end.

Remus snuggled deeper into Sirius, "It's not fair."

Sirius held him tighter, "When is our life ever fair?"

It was quiet for a while after Sirius's last comment before Remus sighed, "Thank you. It- it just caught me off guard to hear that."

"Of course it did. No need to thank me, you would've done the same."

Remus smiled and turned around to face him, "Absolutely."

Sirius leaned closer, "Positively."

Remus moved so their lips were less than an inch apart, "Definitely."

Sirius started to move closer but was interrupted by the door opening and Harry running on their bed and jumping into Sirius,

"Paddy! You home!"

Sirius let go of Remus who pouted, to pull Harry into a hug, "Yes I am, pup! Did you have fun with Moony?"

Harry nodded excitedly, "Yeah! We had bunch of fun!" They let him ramble about his day and tire himself out, only stopping him when he let out a yawn.

"You didn't finish your nap, cub. Do you wanna sleep in here?"

Harry nodded tiredly and moved in between the both of them to cuddle, "You the best daddies ever!"

The men exchanged looks and as they laid down next to Harry, they had the same thought, 'You better believe it.'
