Why not?

[May 1, 2004]

The interview continued for an hour more. McGonagall was smiling at the end there and Light knew he would be getting an employment offer within the next week.

Sato Noriko, standing on the other side of the door when Light finally left the room, thought so as well.

"I had a talk with my Professors," Sato said after they walked further away from the interview room. "They think you are over qualified for the job and that Hogwarts would be an idiot to not hire you. They're not, so the job is as good as yours. They also said that no, Mahoutokoro was neither consulted not informed about reinstating the Triwizard Tournament." Light understood the implied confirmation of that fact being a political faux pass.

"Makes sense given that Triwizard Tournament is traditionally a European event. But considering the recent political tensions, offering a spot at the Tournament would have gone a long way. Britain's Minister for Magic isn't exactly well thought of and Albus Dumbledore himself has a reputation as a fence-sitter in the ICW. He is also liberal minded and-" Sato stopped herself mid sentence. "Right. Your future superior. Better you form your own opinion on Albus Dumbledore. He is a rather controversial figure in international politics. Fudge is the idiot we all ignore."

That meant Dumbledore was not so easily ignored. Light had thought so when he had read the man's many titles in his letter's heading. Who put in some many of their titles in the header of an official school correspondence? Adding on Hogwarts academic ranking or year of their founding would have worked. There was no need for the headmaster to add on four of his titles as well.

"What I meant to say, Yagami-san, is that it is now even more important than ever that you present an outstanding image for Japanese wizards during your tenure at Hogwarts," Sato pressed. "If we had known of it before, then perhaps we would have put in an experienced wizard for the interviews. It is too late now though." She sighed.

"There was an offer for training courses and scholarship before?" Light asked, sounding disinterested but curious. He wasn't. Light was very, very interested in learning all that he could about the magical world. And given that he was going to spend a year in the middle of a politically charged event consisting of a death tournament with a 33% fatality rate, Light found it extremely important to learn all the ways one can kill and defend using magic.

Oh, Ryuk had said Light couldn't be killed with magic.

McGonagall and Sato didn't seem know Light had a Shinigami possessing him, nor that he had a death note or was Kira. The passing students seemed unable to see Ryuk as well. Wizards and witches thus had the same rules as normal humans about being able to see Shinigami only after touching the death note and being killed by said notebook if their names were written in its pages. The option of resolving any problems with liberal use of his Death Note was still available. Kira didn't kill innocents but self defense has always been legal.

That meant Light only needed to learn how to avoid dismemberment caused by magic.

"Yes. I can tell you more but your options depend on your living arrangements. Are you going to keep living among muggles?" Sato said and Light found his attention forced back on Sato's words.

"Sorry, what?" Light asked again, just to be sure. Sato blinked up at him and repeated herself.

"Most Possessed Humans find it difficult to keep living among muggles. Their Gifts as well as the many requirements of their Beings makes it difficult for them to do so." Yes, Light could personally attest to that. Ryuk's apple addiction and tendency to keep speaking at all times had made life difficult for Light several times over. It had been a chore and a half to keep from reacting to Ryuk's antics during class. "Most of them either work exclusively with other supernatural beings, humans who are aware of supernatural beings or just move to the Wizarding World full time." Sato paused and asked again, "You have the same options. Your educational as well as funding options remain dependent on your living arrangements."

Light was Yagami Light. He had a loving family, a good university lined up and a job putting criminals behind bars waiting for him in the future. His life was perfect before the death note and perfect with a bit of hiccup with L after the death note. He didn't need anything to change.

"No, thank you," Light said. Then he smiled at Sato and asked, "If, just in case I would like to do so, what are my options?"

"It's easy if you're an orphan," Sato said. "Things become complicated when you have a family. British Ministry of Magic have their people inform their family and bind them under secrecy oaths. Here, we just fake their deaths. Simpler to move around under cover if no one even knows you exist."

Light blinked in thought as well, mask slipping to reveal the genuine shock on his face. 'Simpler to move around if no one knows you exist'. Like L. Like Kira had, before Light had deliberately revealed his existence.

That changed things.

Because Light had a Death Note.

All he needed to make the world a better place was his Death Note and an Internet connection. There was no need for his future plan, for a job at the NPA, except as a public cover. And if Light moved full time to the Wizarding World, then his cover would be his job at Hogwarts. So, why not?

Yes, Light mused, thinking of L, of the investigation, of that moment months ago when he'd built a bomb in his desk drawer to hide the Death Note and the lives of his family didn't matter as much as his own impending death sentence.

At first, Light had been excited for this game between himself and L. It was a challenge for the right to be Justice in this new world. Getting involved in the Kira Investigation was for the sake of knowing L's real name and winning. But then Ryuk happened, an unexpected one year break happened and knowing L's real name stopped to matter. If Light does this Muggle Studies Professor job, which he has to because Ryuk will kill him otherwise, then L would somehow spin his unexplained absence as Light being Kira. Faking his own death? Using magic?

Yes, why not? What can be more proof for Light's innocence than his own death? How could L catch Kira if Kira was dead? And if he kept on insisting Light was Kira even after that, then his father and the Task Force would get rid of L for him in their grief.

This was perfect. This was genius. Light could use L's own strategy to hide himself and win against L at the same time as doing what Ryuk wanted. L didn't seem like he knew of Magic given his overreaction when he heard of Shinigami on the news. More investigation on Light's end was needed. More information, more books, more guidance, more time, more of everything. Integrating himself into a similar but completely different culture built on magic and now laws of physics was bound to be difficult. Light needed help and fortunately, it seemed like Mahoutokoro and Sato were willing. But one thing was sure—

"Give me some time to think about it," Light decided and smiled his best charming smile. "Do you have a mobile?" Light asked. Sato nodded and took out a phone with an elaborate sticker on it from her pocket. "Can you give me your number? In case I need more information and decide to go forward with it?" Sato smiled back and they exchanged numbers.

Light went back home that day with a new plan forming in his mind. Magic, he thought in wonder, opened several doors he'd had closed to him before.
