Job hunting
[April 29, 2004]
"I'm taking the first off," Light announced unceremoniously at the end of the workday. L glanced up from where he was building a tower of jellies and even his father paused in sorting case files.
"For what, Light-kun?" L stared at Light with his usual expressionless eyes. "Going to do Kira things and kill more innocent people?" Light stares right back at the bastard. Kira killed criminals and by definition, murder convicts were not innocent people. Ergo, even if he were doing Kira things and using the Death Note, he wouldn't be killing innocent people. L really had a gift for getting under Light's skin.
"Personal reasons," Light said shortly. He glanced at his father and said slowly, "I thought I would get a job. For learning responsibility and earning some extra spending money." His father smiled proudly in return.
"That is a good idea, Light. You've just started at the university as well. If you get a decent job, you can even move out and get your place," Soichiro said and for once, Light was glad his father was so supportive.
"But getting a job means you will have less time for the Kira case," L pointed out oh-so-helpfully.
"I do the work of an unpaid intern here," Light replied. "Haven't seen a pay-check yet. Are you going to pay me, Ryuuzaki?" L's fingers clenched slightly on the desert spoon. It was a small motion but to Light, it was an expression of great emotion.
"I'm not going to pay Kira-kun to catch Kira," L shot back and Light smiled.
"Exactly my point." Light spread his hands helplessly. "Bills don't pay themselves. Neither do clothes, food, and credit card bills. Not everyone can get a job being a hermit and getting paid for it."
"I may live like a hermit, but I'm also the Greatest Detective in the world. I work for it," L replied.
"And unless I can also get a job being the Greatest Detective in the world, I certainly won't be paid for living like a hermit," Light said. "The current Greatest Detective in the world is not paying me. Someone has to. And it is not him. So I need a part time job."
"Fine," is all L said before turning back to his jelly tower and strawberry cake.
"Thank you, Ryuuzaki," Light said sarcastically before walking out the door. "For giving me permission to do something I only needed my parents to permit. I won't be calling you father any time soon."
Matsuda snorted before covering his mouth with his hands to suppress laughter. Aizawa doesn't bother and guffaws out loud.
"Children," he shook his head.
"Children," Soichiro agreed.
