Chapter 2
Eda landed on the walkway in front of the school a short while later. She snorted “never thought I’d come here willingly!” and started walking toward the school.
“Mom come on” she grabbed her wrist to stop her. “Don’t make me do this!”
“Kid we talked about this, you’re gonna be fine” she paused “Hel you’ll probably be running this dump in a week”
She started walking again dragging Luz with her. It was, all things considered, a pretty cool place, large halls, interesting architecture, but it was at the end of the day still school. So she hated it on principle.
She followed Eda through the dead halls, students were still in class, to a fancy looking door.
Eda paused, took a breath, then knocked.
“Come in.” Called a voice she hadn’t heard before.
She walked in behind Eda and saw a man with a very strange fashion sense looking down at some papers on his desk.
“How can I help you-“ he looked up and his eyes widened with, was that fear? Uh oh.
“Edalyn?” His voice was now very concerned.
“In the flesh!” The witch in question replied. “How’s it hanging bumpipoo”
“What..” he cleared his throat “why, are you here?” He seemed to calm himself down a bit.
“Trust me, I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t have to be.” She turned an accusing glare at her traitor of a mother. “But I gotta kid, and she needs some kinda formal education. Unfortunately”
The fear returned “A kid?? Edalyn Clawthorne has a KID?” Was he shaking? “Titan help us”
“Yup!” Eda grabbed her and pulled her into the principal’s sight. Traitor. “Meet one Luz Clawthorne!”
luz let out a begrudging “hi.”
He just stared, for wayyy longer than socially acceptable, she thinks.
He cleared his throat, again, doing his best to keep his composure. He was failing. “Well I suppose we could arrange… something.”
Eda clapped her hands together. “Amazing, Luz” she turned to her daughter “why don’t you go look around” she gave Luz a knowing look.
She could have sworn she saw Bumps eye twitch but she wasn’t gonna wait around. She turned on her heal and booked it.
Her mom had told her plenty of stories about her time at school, and her little pocket dimension, with a very dramatic name. In her opinion of course.
Luz walked up to the locker Eda told her about and used her magic to pop it open she walked in, taking in the high ceiling and the excess of doors covering everything.
She strolled down the winding ramp thing. This was probably the only part of school she was excited about, it certainly lived up to expectations.
She headed toward the main entrance in the detention room, she wondered if the kids there had found it yet. Her question was answered when she heard voices.
She walked up behind them as they closed the door they were peaking through.
“HI!!” She lived for the screams they let out.
“HOW DID YOU GET IN HERE!!??” The one with an, admittedly very cool earring, demanded wayyy too loud.
“Same way you did.” She replied
…
“You.. uh, you cool?”
“Duh”
The canid demon barked and the witch to his right spoke up for him. “Barkus says you’re aura’s strong and silly, like a baby’s laughter!”
“Uhhh.. thanks?” She spoke directly to the demon. Turning back to the trio she said “I’m Luz Clawthorne! Nice to meetcha!”
“Viney.” The first witch replied, clearly still suspicious.
“Jerbo!” Another bark “that’s Barkus!”
“How did you know about this place?” Viney questioned.
“Oh! My mom made it” she said it like it was the most obvious thing in the world. It, evidently, was not.
“Your mom? Your mom is Lord Calamity??” She gestured to the portrait on the wall, it was covered in graffiti but still clearly a young Eda.
Luz sighed “yup, that’s her, unfortunately…”
They stared slack jaw for quite some time, must be a running theme today.
Suddenly Luz felt the mental tug indicating a hext on her scroll. Summoning it from her own pocket dimension she read the message.
“Speaking of witch,” she began again. “I gotta go. Which door would put me out near the principal’s office?”
“Um” Jerbo looked around, “that one!” He concluded pointing to a door a few feet away.
“Thanks! See you later alligator!”
She could have sworn she heard Viney whisper “what’s an alligator?” As she stepped through the door. Human phrases were great!
Unfortunately being back in the main building reminded her of her current predicament, ughh.
She dragged her feet back to the office, but she’d could only put it off for so long.
“Hey mom” she offered walking in to see a triumphant, yet tried, looking Eda, and a Principal who looked like he wanted nothing more than to jump out the window to his right. “How’d it go?” She asked, she had dared to hope he wouldn’t let her attended, but judging by Eda’s face, she was doomed.
“Great! A certain Owl Lady managed to get you into every track. You’re welcome.”
For once, Luz was the one gawking. “How?”
Eda gave her a feral grin. “I have my ways!” Suddenly she heard a loud thump. Turning to look at Bump she saw him face down in his sad stack of papers. “Let’s scram before he changes his mind.”
Once again luz was whisked out the door, down the hall to the front entrance, and unceremoniously tossed on Eda’s staff.
They where high over Bonesborough when Luz finally piped up. “your really making me do this?”
“Uh huh” Luz went back to her silent despair, at least she had two more days of freedom, she would stay as far from school as possible for as long as she could.
