"You Lied to Me!" (Agent 8)

“Step inside! Do not be shy!” the phone exclaimed as the door to the strange device opened upwards, revealing a space in the bottom big enough for Agent 8 and MC Craig to fit inside comfortably. Eight was still amazed by how the phone managed to build such a thing in seconds from the massive parts that she had to use a cart just to carry off.

“Home sweet home, here we come!” Craig cheered. The two stepped inside without hesitation. Eight was giddy with excitement. She was finally going to be free. She was finally going to the surface. The depiction of the city above (“Inkopolis Square” as Craig called it), looked so colorful and gorgeous when she saw it on the cover of that magazine left on the train. Promised Land, indeed; Eight could hardly wait to see it in person. Compared to the Metro and even the Octarian Domes, the city on the surface looked like a true paradise. If that was where Craig, Pearl, and now Marina all lived… She could 100% understand their desperation to return home.

“Um, is it just me, or does that kinda look exactly like a blender?” Marina asked. Before Eight could wrap her head around what that meant (what in the world was a “blender”?) the door shut, and the floor of the device raised up into the glass chamber.

“Whoa, woah, yeah, hold up! This just got seriously sketchy!” Pearl agreed. Eight was beginning to worry. What did they mean by this? Was this not a machine to transport them to the surface?

“Ingredient acquisition complete. Reformatting matter…” The phone spoke as the platform locked into place within the glass. There was a whirring sound, and something was spinning rapidly above the two cephalopods’ heads. Oh… Yeah, that part didn’t sound too good—

“What did that thing say? HEY! LET US OUT OF HERE, YOU STUPID PHONE!!!” Even Craig had caught onto the idea that something was wrong. Eight began to panic as the elder squid banged against the glass walls. Red lights flashed, a clear sign of danger. What was happening?!

It was all a lie, Eight realized, the phone never planned to send me to the surface at all.

“YOU LIED TO ME!!!” She cried, also pounding on the glass to no avail, “YOU STUPID MACHINE, YOU LIED TO ME!!!”

The phone, however, did not seem to hear her. Or if it did, it was ignoring her.

I don’t want to die…! Not after I’ve come so far! Eight panicked. Yet she could do nothing. She wasn’t strong enough to break the glass from where she was within it. All she could do was wait for death to come.

Or so she thought…
