Breaking the news to Hazel
“Happy birthday my little munchkin.” Clarke whispered. Her and Lexa had currently gone into Hazel and Aden’s room to wake her up. Hazel sleepily rubbed her eyes and stared up at her moms.
“Mama?” Hazel sleepily said.
“Hi…hi…” Lexa cooed. “It’s your birthday my love.” Hazel looked confused. Clarke laughed at the cuteness of it all.
Aden quietly chuckled. He had just woken up a few minutes ago. “Happy birthday, little sister.”
Hazel laughed and clapped her hands, sitting upright. Clarke lifted her up and gave her a kiss. Lexa and Clarke walked back to their room and placed her on their bed. They didn’t really want a big birthday celebration.
“Hazel, we have something to tell you.” Lexa said, not sure if her young daughter would understand. Hazel looked up at her curiously.
Clarke nervously announced, “ Mama has a baby in her tummy.” Her and Lexa exchanged nervous glances.
Hazel cocked her head, “Tummy?” She pointed to Lexa.
“Yes honey.” Clarke nodded. Hazel crawled over and sat in front of Lexa. She was about to touch Lexa’s tummy when she stopped and looked up at Lexa as if to ask for permission.
Lexa let out a nervous breath and nodded. Hazel put her little hands on Lexa and asked, “Baby?”
Clarke explained, “In about 9 months you’ll get a baby brother or sister!”
Hazel clapped her hands, “Yay! Brother!”
Lexa hesitated, “It might not be a boy sweetheart.”
Hazel pouted and said, “Brother!”
“But you’ll love a sister anyway right?” Clarke asked.
“Humph.” Hazel pouted slightly.
———
“Do you think it will be a boy, ai hodnes?” Lexa asked Clarke.
Clarke thought for a moment then softly said, “No.”
Lexa sighed, “Gosh I don’t know how Hazel will react. I mean this was kind of an accident. We should have been more careful.”
“Hey.” Clarke reached out her hand and placed it on top of her wife’s. “We’ll get through it together, okay?”
Lexa nodded, but some fear still gnawing away at her.
