The Farmer's Market

“Ready?” Lily appeared at James’ side the moment he landed on the couch.

He groaned and tried to hide behind a throw cushion, ignoring Lily’s attempts to pull it off him. “No, I’m not ready.”

Sirius sauntered in the room, placing himself in an armchair, coffee in hand. He smirked at the situation before him, taking a sip but not saying a word.

“You promised,” Lily placed a hand on her hip, the other holding a pretty woven basket.

“I was drunk,” James howled. “You can’t hold a man to the decisions he makes when he’s drunk.”

“I got up early for this,” Lily tapped her foot impatiently. “You’re up to. Just stop whining and we can go.”

“I need coffee.”

“There’s coffee there.”

“I need breakfast.”

“There’s breakfast there. Even those little donuts you like so much,” Lily tried to tempt him. When he didn’t move, she gave an exasperated sigh and changed tacks. “Honestly, the sooner we go, the sooner you can come back here.”

Another groan. Another glare.

“Where are you trying to take him?” Sirius finally asked, hiding his curiosity behind his mug.

“The farmer’s market,” Lily explained, indicating her basket. “He said last night, we’d get up and go, and now look at him.” She kicked the couch. “Useless.”

“Go on, Prongs,” Sirius grinned. “Think of the produce, the sourdough, the cheeses.”

“Exactly,” Lily nodded, crossing her arms.

“The seafood, the cured meats, the sweets,” Sirius continued, and Lily nodded along. “There might even be a woman selling vodka made from her own hair.”

Lily’s face fell as James snorted from under the pillow, and she whirled, “Sirius!”

The dark-haired man started laughing, “Sorry Evans, I couldn’t help it. You’ve got him getting up for a farmer’s market of all bloody naff coupley things to do. You’re asking for it.”

Lily frowned further, “For the last bloody time, it’s Potter.”

“Nah,” Sirius stood, and crossed the room, stopping only to give Lily a quick squeeze around the shoulders before continuing back out the door. “You’ll always be Evans to me.”

Lily shook her head, but her lips quirked as she turned back to her husband. She readjusted her shirt over her belly and tried a new approach, “James, the baby’s hungry. Please can we go.”

The cushion flew across the room as James leapt to his feet, “Of course, sorry.” He stooped as he past Lily to pat her rounded stomach affectionately and plant a kiss, “Sorry baby.”

Lily let the broad smile take over her face as she watched him gather keys and pull on shoes. He turned back toward her when ready, “Come on, Lil,” he gestured towards the door. “Let’s go.”

“Like I haven’t been saying that this whole time,” Lily muttered quietly as she followed him out the door, smile still in place, a hand resting on her middle. “Come on, baby. To the farmer’s market.”
