The End of one life and The Beginning of another
Deaths are not cruel as at some point or another they were human too. Though this means Deaths won't abuse the powers they have it may cause issues with how they reap the departed to the afterlife, such as the case of Oak.
Now Oak was a Reaper or a person who helped people transition into the afterlife or the place where all things will reside. Oak is one of the more compassionate Reapers for how she died was gruesome. So whenever she brings over the traumatized dead she makes sure they are cared for and comfortable with her. This had never been a problem in fact it was a great thing as it helped the newly departed settle into the afterlife quicker. Now on a winter day she found a child that was half dead who looked at her, now Reapers are only visible to the dead and those who are about to die. Oak felt her heart break at the young child being able to see her and approached them, and when they flinched when she did so she felt her heart being ground to dust.
She approached more cautiously and gently saying "Hey kid I'm not gonna hurt ya. Can I come closer?"
The child didn't respond hoping that the lady would go away. Though Oak took the silence as a yes with the kid curling up into a ball as she approached. Oak had dealt with many who had died in the winter dying from starvation, exposure or sometimes from people attacking them for just being homeless. Oak knew from experience that this kid wasn't going to make it out alive so she made a plan that she would help this kid in any way she could, most likely taking them to her home in the afterlife if they didn’t have a person waiting for them.
From what Oak had seen there hadn’t been much activity on the kid from spirits nor Reapers meaning that this kid’s family did not know about them or cared about them but due to how the afterlife is it could take awhile before the kiddo could meet the family they have in the afterlife. So Oak just walked up to them, sat down and said “ Say kid what’s your name?”
The child just stared at her in silent questioning and painfully said “I think it’s Harry but I hate that name.”
Oak knew very well what it was like to hate a name that was given to her that’s why her name is now Oak so she just asked “What would you like me to call you?” the kid mumbled something so Oak repeated “ Sorry what was that”
“I want to be called Berry” the said again
“Well hello there Berry my name is Oak. So why are you out here?”
“I can’t tell you otherwise you’ll hate me too” they said glumly.
“Well how do you know I will hate you it can’t be that bad” Oak said in a try to understand why this kid seemed to be on the brink of death
“I told my uncle that I was a girl so he hit me and locked me in my closet but I ran away from him” the girl said on the verge of tears
“Hey kid, would you like to come with me? I'll take care of ya okay?”
Berry looked up at Oak with her pale face and sunken eyes and agreed to come with her, grabbing Oak’s hand not yet realizing that she had left her body behind her.
Somewhere in the forests of Romania a haunting scream echoed with the eight turning to seven.
