Hogsmeade
A few months of this passed and y/n and Sirius had been practising and sneaking around and now it was almost winter break time.
Sirius was in the common room with James, Peter, and Remus. James was going on about his plan to finally ask Lily out, “I could send her an owl with a lily and a note asking her!” he exclaimed “James, to be honest with you, that is not a great idea, Lily’s favourite flowers aren't lilies” Remus said, he sounded bored.
James whipped his head around “how do you know that?” Remus sighed “maybe you should actually participate in herbology instead of looking at her and not hearing anything”. James nodded like that was a stroke of genius.
It was late and Sirius could tell Remus wanted nothing more than to sleep but he was trying really hard to stay awake until he and James also went up to bed. Peter had already gone, he said he was going to read but Sirius felt like he was using that as an excuse to go to bed at 9.
“Oh, no better idea! I’ll give her a present on christmas morning and instead of the card saying ‘merry christmas’ it’ll say ‘will you go out with me?’ And then we could go to Hogsmeade together” James was still talking but Sirius tuned him out and thought of all the fun dog tricks he could do.
He had mastered backflip, dribble, and up. They had done a bit more dancing like that but it always turned into normal dancing at some point. Y/n taught him a few new ones too, like bow which wasn't too hard; it was like a half-lay down on his front. Sirius also learned a couple ways to do fetch, and hide and seek, currently they were working on handstand but his balance wasn't great so he fell down after about 2 seconds in.
The next day was Saturday and there was a trip to Hogsmeade that day, after he finished eating, Sirius went over to where y/n was eating to ask her.
“Hey y/n do you want to go to Hogsmeade with me? Maybe go to The Three Broomsticks or something?” he asked. Y/n nodded while swallowing a bite of food, “yeah of course” she said then looked around and gestured for him to get closer “do you want to put on a little dog show for my friends or whoever's nearby?” she whispered in his ear.
Sirius considered this for a moment then thought it was a good idea so he nodded “perfect, see you on the train then!” y/n said and he walked back to his spot at the Gryffindor table. “See James, it's not that hard” he said and took a sip of pumpkin juice, “yeah for you, you're already dating her so the chance she’ll say yes is much higher” “James, all you have to do is tell Evans how you feel, that's what I did and it worked” Sirius said.
After breakfast they went back up to the common room and hung out, James had moved on from the topic of Lily for the time being and he, Sirius, and Peter had begun talking about quidditch.
A very excited 4th year yelled that it was almost time to go to Hogsmeade. Naturally the 3 boys looked up from the quidditch magazine and at the clock and the 4th year was right. James closed the magazine and put it back on the stack on the coffee table and all the Gryffindors who wanted to go started gathering and leaving in clusters.
Sirius met y/n right before getting in the train. He held out his hand and gestured for her to go first in a gentlemanly manner, she laughed and took his hand and stepped on the train, he followed.
James, Peter, and Remus had gotten on the train before them so Sirius and y/n went to find them, they were in the compartment they always try to get. As soon as Sirius and y/n walked in James went “woah woah, you should probably go get a different compartment, we don't need to see that” “see what?” Sirius asked with a smile, the two of them both standing half in the compartment. James waved his hand in their direction, “whatever you guys are gonna get up to in close spaces” he said, “we’re not that bad” Sirius said, “we can be if you want us to” y/n added.
That made Sirius go pale and then red in the cheeks, she pulled at his arm “seems like they dont want us to be with them, plus there isn't a ton of space for all of us” she said and walked him to an empty compartment a little ways down the carriage.
Sirius closed the door behind them and they both sat down across from each other, the train started to move and y/n was looking out the window. Being this close to her was still a bit weird but Sirius had just accepted that it might take a while for that to change but he had gotten better.
The train ride to Hogsmeade was pretty uneventful, they talked about seemingly random things and about the technicalities of the dog trick show they were going to do.
Sirius didn't want anyone to know it was him, although he figured Remus, James, and Peter would probably notice if they saw.
They got off the train and James asked Sirius what they did to which he answered that they just talked like normal humans then went off with y/n who was looking for a place that Sirius could transform without it being obvious.
There was an alleyway between 2 of the less popular buildings in Hogsmeade that Sirius ended up going between then coming out again as a dog and y/n placed her hand in between his shoulder blades as they walked around.
Y/n had told her friends to wait in the square while she went to get her dog and there they were. They saw y/n and Sirius walking towards them and ‘awwed’ at the dog because they thought he was cute.
Before the tricks even started they gathered around and knelt down to pet him, Sirius looked up at y/n who just smiled and watched. “What's his name?” “How old is he?” “What breed is he?” “Why didn't you bring him to school?” questions were being shot at y/n while they were all still petting him, one of them even found that spot behind his right ear. “Smokey, 17 months, not entirely sure what breed he is, a big one that's for sure though, I didn't bring him because we’re only allowed owls, cats, and toads, besides, I don't think Mrs. Norris would act too kindly to him being around” y/n answered.
The attention was cool but a little overwhelming for him. That's when Sirius saw James, Remus, and Peter walk out of The Three Broomsticks, saw the commotion and came over. James and Remus had hot drinks probably coffee and hot chocolate and Peter had a butterbeer
From the look on Remus’s face Sirius knew he knew, not long after that a knowing smile went over James and Peter’s faces too but they played along. “Nice dog you got there y/n, can he do any tricks?” James asked.
Oh fuck you James, of course I can do tricks but why do you have to say it like that
James gave Sirius a smirk. “As a matter of fact, he can” y/n said and the girls backed away to give him enough room to do the tricks. Y/n started with dribble, a nice easy one. Some of them were entertained, Sirius tried his best to just think of y/n and the tricks at hand “just ignore them ok” y/n whispered to him between dribbles, he nodded as secretly as possible and they kept going.
Y/n gave him a couple simple ones “roll over, play dead, speak, shake” which lead to some of her friends asking to try, y/n gave Sirius a look and he figured why not and walked to face one of y/n’s friends.
“Smokey bark!” she said, and he did, which got a positive reaction, another girl asked him to sit and shake a paw, then the other paw. “Smokey is so smart!” one of the girls said to y/n, she said “I know” and gave Sirius a special kind of smile.
“Can I try one?” James asked, “yeah sure” y/n said, wearily Sirius walked to his friends, “ok uh, Smokey be a gentleman” he said, Sirius cocked his head to one side. Y/n came over “maybe you mean bow?” she asked and bowed to Sirius who immediately did so. “Oh, ok then”
James, Peter, and Remus talked to each other about what to make him do next, when they faced him again James said “Smokey, kiss”
Are you kidding me, you sly guys, I’m gonna get you back for this!
Since none of the boys leaned down to his level, Sirius took his opportunity and jumped up with his front legs and landed with his wet, muddy paws on James’s shoulders. “We know it's you Padfoot” James whispered, Sirius gave him a lick before jumping down again and turning away in the sassiest way he could.
He saw y/n cover her mouth as she laughed. Sirius walked up to her and she leaned down, everyone else was still looking at James’s muddy robes and hearing him complain about it.
“I didn't think you’d actually do it” she whispered, he just nodded, what else could he do.
By now the small group had gained more of an audience. Y/n called everyone's attention and said they would do a few more tricks. Everyone cheered and was pretty excited, apparently this sort of thing didn't happen much at Hogsmeade.
Y/n nodded at Sirius, he was excited too now. Y/n made a frisbee appear and threw it, Sirius looked at her, waiting for the cue “retrieve!” she said and pointed in the direction of the frisbee. Sirius bolted that way, wind in his fur, it was really freeing to just run. When he got close enough, he jumped and caught the frisbee, ran close enough to the group, spun in a circle a couple times then let the frisbee go and y/n caught it.
The crowd applauded and when Sirius got back to y/n she pet him and told him he did well. “Alright, Smokey backflip” she said and motioned, Sirius backed up just enough to run and jump off her. They had gotten really good at that one so he didn't even need to back up as far as before, just a few paces.
Some 3rd years were really impressed and said “that was so cool!” after every trick. It made Sirius proud that he could do all these cool things and entertain people, it was good exercise and fun.
Y/n threw the frisbee again and Sirius went after it but this time he jumped off the side of a building to reach it. On his way back with the frisbee in his mouth, Sirius overheard Peter talking to James and Remus “I didn't know he had that in him” “yeah I didn't think he would take it that seriously”.
Sirius was getting a bit tired but the energy of the crowd helped, even some of the teachers had come out to watch. “Ok last ones” y/n said, “ready?” she asked him, Sirius nodded, expecting this to be a kind of combination trick.
“Smokey, up!” y/n said and tapped her collarbones, Sirius jumped up and she led them around for a couple steps, “dribble” she said and Sirius hopped off and ran behind her before going through her legs a couple times “backflip!” he did a flawless backflip, “handstand”
I knew something like this would happen sooner or later
Sirius tried to not think about it too hard and went up into his handstand, y/n seemed to have something planned as at the 2 second mark when he usually falls she said “tuck and roll!” so he purposely leaned his weight to one side so he would fall, then brought in his legs as much as he could and rolled at the same time.
“Hide and seek” y/n said, while Sirius was still laying on his front in the snow, he used his front paws to cover his eyes and counted to ten. Upon opening his eyes, y/n was gone, Sirius looked around then began sniffing her out, he found her tucked behind some people in the crowd, after all she only had ten seconds to hide.
They went back to the middle of the crowd again and he gave her a lot of licks while she pet him. Everyone was clapping and cheering “well done” y/n whispered.
They had to wait for what felt like ages for the crowd to fully disperse so that they could discreetly go back to that alley and have Sirius change back.
When he did, y/n pulled him close and looked out the end of the alley to make sure nobody saw “that was awesome” she said and kissed him, he kissed her back.
They went to The Three Broomsticks for what was left of the visit to Hogsmeade and had butterbeer with James, Remus, and Peter. They didn't talk about the dog thing seeing as they were in public, they just talked about school things and winter celebrations and such.
On the train ride back to Hogwarts they all sat in one compartment so they could talk about the dog situation.
“Before anyone asks, I have to ask y/n something, how did you time the handstand with the tuck and roll?” Sirius asked, “that was actually not so hard, because I know you're not the best at handstand yet I knew how long you could feasibly do it for and I could also see the slight wobble which is a good indicator that you're gonna fall” she said.
“Ok our turn to ask questions” James said as the train started moving. “Why did you lick me like that, I thought kisses were reserved for your girlfriend” he asked “well Prongs, as a dog, kisses are for everyone, and you got what you had coming for you” Sirius said, y/n giggled.
“That was really impressive overall though, I thought you would have been doing really basic dog commands like sit, lay down, come, stay, that kind of thing but you really blew everyone away with that” Remus said “thanks Rem”. “Yeah, turns out it's actually really fun for both of us so we just kept doing more exciting and complicated things, right now we’re still working on handstand and one called backpack, and airplane” y/n explained.
“Do you guys do other things with Sirius as a dog?” James asked, “like what?” Sirius asked, “oh you know, actual kissing, dancing, maybe other stuff like that” “that's for us to know and for you to never find out, but y/n did take me to the park during the summer as a dog and all the small children loved it when I did things they asked” Sirius answered.
“Why is it so easy for you guys to just do these tricks?” Peter asked, “trust me it's not easy, have you ever tried to jump off a wall and catch something mid-air?” Sirius said, “the tricks themselves can be hard, he struggled with backflip at first for a little bit but it's a lot easier than I imagine training a normal dog is because I know for sure that Sirius can understand me in a way a normal dog wouldn't, he speaks english whereas dogs don't exactly understand all the words and actions you use” y/n said.
Y/n reached to hold Sirius’s hand that was closest to her. “And don't tell anyone that it was me or that would kinda ruin it” Sirius said when the train pulled to a stop a couple minutes later.
Everyone got out and they heard a few conversations about Smokey’s amazing tricks, y/n smiled and leaned her head into Sirius, still holding hands, he did the same.
