“So, do wizards go trick or treating?”
Sirius stopped stuffing his face for a moment, wiping his mouth before speaking. “I’m gonna be honest, Remus, I have absolutely no idea what you're going on about.”
”Wait! My sister told me they just learned about that in muggle studies! Is that the tradition where you go around to stranger’s houses, pestering them for candy and if they don’t give it to you, you throw eggs and toilet paper at them?”
”That’s horrible!” James said, his glasses sliding down his nose.
Remus sighed, finishing his plate right as the pudding arrived. “That’s not… well not everyone does that. Does that mean we won’t be stuffing our faces with candy tonight?”
”I think we should still do that,” Sirius said quickly, a mischievous glint in his eye.
James rolled his eyes and grimaced at the amount of sugar Sirius was piling onto his plate. ”How do you know about all these muggle traditions anyways?”
”Halloween was practically the only time I was allowed out of the house,” Remus said, without thinking. A wave of regret passed over him, and he laughed before continuing. “My folks are just really strict, you know. We were moving all the time and…”
”That’s okay, Remus, we’ll steal some sweets from the kitchens,” Peter said, patting his arm.
And they did. As soon as the feast was over, despite how full they were, they took James’ cloak and snuck down, sneaking back up with arms full of sweets, dropping a few along the way. When they walked in, none other than Lily Evans was in the common room, munching on her own batch of candies.
When they walked in, James stopped cold, tripping them up and causing the cloak to slip off, revealing them all, Lily screamed, then rolled her eyes when she saw it was them. “Oh, it’s just you lot. What on earth were you- oh, did you raid the kitchens?”
”What? No, of course not Lily,” Sirius said, easily slipping into the lie. She just shook her head and stood up, making all of them take a step back. “Uh, what are you-“
”It’s Halloween,” she said simply. “I can get you in trouble any day out of the year, but I’m missing home and I really just want to stuff my face with candy right now.”
”If only we could dress up,” Remus said, smiling as he remembered his costume from the year earlier, which was Frankenstein.
“Who says we can’t?” James said. Lily turned to look at him, and it seemed to Remus that she was noticing him for the first time.
They spent the night trying on each other’s clothes, dancing around and playing the one spooky song that Sirius had on repeat. Sirius donned a leather jacket, and Remus felt his heart flutter, ever so slightly.
“I don’t want this night to end,” Lily whispered, seemingly to herself.
“Don’t worry Lily, there will be a lifetime of nights like this,” James said, the soft light coming from the blinds lighting up his face.
Remus couldn’t help but think about after Hogawarts, about the register and how he won’t get the chance to live a real life outside of school. But he could think about all that later, there was plenty of time to dwell on that.
It was the best halloween he’d ever had.
October 31st, 1972
“Lily, will you stop going on about your stupid muggle traditions? You’re at Hogwarts now, you might as well accept that your old Halloween festivities are gone. Just stop complaining.”
For the first time that year, Lily was crying along with Myrtle in the bathrooms. She knew Severus didn’t mean to hurt her feelings, and she was whining quite a lot about missing her family.
But she couldn’t help it! She missed her parents dearly, she missed matching costumes with her sister, she missed gorging herself on candy, she missed going to the cinema and watching whatever new scary movie was out that year.
Last year wasn’t too bad, at least the latter end of it, so she decided she was going to swallow her pride and ask those boys if they wanted to spend the night together again. She might even invite Marlene and Mary, since Remus seemed to get along with them alright.
They may be infuriating bullies, but Remus was sweet and smart, and Peter seemed perfectly alright. Even if Potter and Black were the most infuriating people on the planet, she couldn’t deny that they were funny.
So at the feast that night, she approached the table with Marlene and Mary in toe, and sat right across from the Marauders, as they started calling themselves. They were whispering about something, and Lily thought they were talking about Astronomy and moon phases, but all conversation suddenly stopped.
“Hey Lily,” Remus said, a kind smile on his face. He glared at the others before facing forward. “You know, after that scream-lecture you gave us for the prank we pulled in potions, I’m surprised you’d ever talk to us again.”
”It’s Halloween,” she said simply, suddenly shy. She eyed Severus from across the room, who was glaring at her so strongly she could’ve sworn she felt her skin burning. “I thought we could… um…”
Mary raised an eyebrow at her before speaking. “Lily told us about the killer party you had last year after the feast, and we want in this year.”
”Party?” Peter squeaked, shaking his head. “It was just Lily and us!”
”Well you’re definitely invited to this year’s party,” Sirius said pointedly. “We’ll get the candy and meet you there.”
”Oh, so you get to do all the fun bits without us?” Marlene said, shaking her head. “Think again, we’re coming with you.”
Later at the party, Lily flicked her eyes to James for just a moment, noticed him staring at her with those stupid fond eyes, and looked down promptly. Maybe it was the sugar high, but he seemed so much sweeter on halloween nights.
Lily couldn’t wait for next year.
October 31st, 1973
“Sirius, will you quit playing that god awful music?” James said, covering his ears with a pillow.
“Fine, fine,” Sirius said, snuggling into a chair in the common room. “So, have we decided who we’re blaming for leaking our plans for tonight to the whole house? I still think it’s Peter.”
”It was Marlene,” Remus said, walking in and plopping right next to Sirius. He held his breath, trying to keep his heart rate normal. It was perfectly average to feel this way around your best mates, obviously.
”What?” James said, sitting up quickly. “How do you know?”
He shrugged, his shoulder brushing against Sirius’. “She told me. She accidentally let it slip to the quidditch team, and they kinda let it slip to everyone else, so now we’re here, and we’ve got at least 60 people coming tonight. So we’re gonna need a lot more candy.”
”How come girls tell you everything,” James said with a humph. “I tried to talk to Lily today and she ignored me completely.”
”You cursed Snivellus today, remember?” Peter said.
”But it’s Halloween, and he called Mary that awful bloody word.” He pouted, staring longingly at Remus. “You’re so good at talking to them.”
”I’m- what?” Remus said. Sirius glanced over to see Remus blushing furiously.
“So which one of them are you snogging?” Peter said slyly, noticing his features. Sirius felt like ice, he couldn’t move or say a thing.
Remus just shook his head. “Let’s stop talking about my nonexistent love life and focus on the party we’re supposed to be throwing in six hours.”
That night, Sirius tried his best to tear his eyes away from his friend, and focused on other endeavors. If Remus was going to be good with girls, then so was Sirius.
So naturally, he spent the night snogging Mary Macdonald, pretending she was someone else. “Sirius, Sirius!” she said, pulling away from him. “As enjoyable as this is, and it really is enjoyable, I promised Lily I’d keep her avoiding James tonight.”
James was looking particularly glum, sitting on the couch and whispering with Remus, Sirius sauntered over, trying to catch Remus’ eye to no avail. “Why the long face, Potter? Sad Evans won’t give in to you?”
”It’s Halloween,” he muttered. “It’s a tradition for her to be nice to me tonight. If she knew what that son of a bitch said, she wouldn’t be defending him.”
”We promised Mary we wouldn’t tell her, she wants to handle it on her own,” Peter said, though he looked reluctant about this.
Sirius looked over at Marlene, Mary, and Lily, who were dancing with another girl whom Sirius thought to be named Dorcas. “Next year, it’s not gonna be a party like this, okay? Or at least, if we are, we’ll be sending out invitations.”
“Don’t be so serious, Sirius,” Remus said, smiling and winking at him. Sirius felt his heart drop into his stomach. “Tonight was fun, and it seemed to be fun for you, too. You were snogging Mary just a second ago.”
Oh, right, he was supposed to be excited about that. “Well, I’ve done it so many times that I’m just used to it right now.”
Remus looked away again, but laughed an uneven laugh. “Player.”
“You know it.”
He could evaluate these feelings later, when he wasn’t pressed up against Remus’ side. Much, much later, when the thought of liking boys no longer made him feel like he was suffocating.
October 31st, 1974
“This party is…”
”Wild? Out of control? An awful idea?” Remus suggested, sipping from the sour drink one of the seventh years whipped up.
”One of those, yeah,” James said, nodding his head. He was slightly tipsy. Okay, maybe a little bit more than slightly, but he had to mentally prepare for seeing Lily.
She had gotten slightly taller over the summer, and she styled her hair differently now, and she somehow just seemed even more stunning than she was before.
Maybe it was the fact that he finally admitted to himself that he was in love with her. When she finally came down in a short orange dress, covered in pumpkins enchanted to make different faces, James made a beeline for her.
She smiled at him, and James nearly fainted. Her smile was the most incredible thing he’d ever seen. “Alright, Lily?”
“Hello, James,” she said, her eyes widening at the sight of the party. “Our little tradition seems to have grown into a bit of a legendary thing, huh?”
”Seems it has.” He grabbed a drink and handed it to her. “Here you go, if you don’t want to get pissed I’d probably refrain, this stuff is strong.”
”Oh, please.” She had a glint in her eye and downed the drink in five seconds flat. “Would you like to dance with me?”
”Would I- You’d like to-“ James sputtered. Lily just giggled and grabbed his hand, he felt electricity coursing through it. “Why are you so nice to me on Halloween?”
Maybe it was the spirits that made him so honest, but he didn’t care. Lily’s face fell into a more thoughtful stare, and she paused for several seconds before responding. “Oh, I don’t know James. You made me feel so nice in first year, but, really I think it’s just cause you give me free sweets.”
She said the last part with a wink and a sly grin. James felt his face heat up, and he looked down. His blush probably wouldn’t be apparent with his dark complexion, but he couldn’t wipe the stupid grin off his face. “Speaking of free things.. would you might coming up to my room for a bit?
She seemed reluctant. “Oh, James, I don’t know…”
”No funny business,” he said quickly, groaning inwardly. His pursuits so far that year had made her annoyed with him on more than one occasion, but he hadn’t realized they made her feel even the slightest bit wary around him. He made a mental note to dial it back. “I promise, it’ll just be for a moment.”
She nodded, and James didn’t let go of her hand as they navigated through the crowd. He noticed Sirius winking at him before going back to snogging some random fifth year Ravenclaw girl.
When they reached his room, he rummaged around in his trunk to pull out a giant bag of muggle candy. “Oh, my god, where on Earth did you get that from?”
”I begged my parents to take me into town for it before we left for Hogwarts.” He was beaming, seeing Lily so happy made his heart float into his throat. “I thought I could bring a bit of home here for you.”
”You’re so- you- I don’t know what to say.” Her eyes suddenly pricked with tears, and James was worried he’d done something wrong before she crushed him in a hug. “Thank you.”
”It’s just candy,” he muttered, though he was secretly elated to be this close with her.
She shook her head and pulled away, grabbing a Mars bar. “You can be considerate, Potter, when you try hard enough.”
They sat on the floor of his dorm for hours, talking and stuffing their faces with candy, ignoring the party below. He found out so much about her, and he wanted the moment to last forever.
Then again, there would always be more time to learn more.
October 31st, 1975
“Oi, Evans!” James called, practically bouncing off the walls. It was Halloween, so there’s no wonder he was excited. It was the only time of the year Lily gave him the time of day.
Lily didn’t think she was that mean to him over the past year. She and him had actually become quite good friends, though not near as close as her and Remus. She even became close with Sirius, they considered her an honorary Marauder sometimes, which she denied. She wasn’t involved with their antics.
She rolled her eyes, but walked over anyways. “Hello Potter, Remus.”
”We were wondering if you were free tonight,” Remus said.
”There’s a party tonight, isn’t there?” She didn’t mean to sound panicked, but with O.W.L’s coming up, her prefect duties, and the looming war, along with her strained relationship with Severus, she was wanting desperately for a normal Halloween. “It’s tradition, theres gotta be a party tonight.”
”Tomorrow night,” James corrected. “We’re having a joint birthday halloween party for Sirius. Tonight… we had different plans.”
Hogsmede had a cinema, an extremely small, one room cinema, but a cinema nonetheless. The marauders were planning on sneaking out to see a spooky movie, just like Lily used to do. They explained the plan, and sneaking out, and how the theater was showing a double feature of Race With the Devil and The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Lily smiled so hard her cheeks hurt. “Wow, Remus, you always come up with the best plans.”
”Actually, it was James’ plan. He remembered you talking about missing seeing scary movies with your parents on Halloween, so he found out a way to bring that tradition to Hogwarts.”
Lily’s heart swelled with admiration and.. something else she wasn’t ready to face yet. “That’s very sweet of you, James. Thank you.”
He nodded, a wide smile on his face. “See you at eight on the dot. Bye, Lily.”
The movie night went extraordinarily. James and Lily sat at the very end of the pack, with the rest of the Marauders and Marlene and Mary to their right.
Scary movies didn’t bother Lily, and besides, Rocky Horror wasn’t scary in the first place. James, on the other hand, was terrified. And there was one point during the second film where he latched onto her, then pulled away quickly, muttering “I’m sorry, I’m sorry.”
Maybe it was just because it was Halloween, but Lily felt braver, so she reached out and grabbed his hand.
“You’re sure this is okay?” he whispered. “I don’t want to make you uncomfortable.”
Lily whispered that yes, of course it was okay.
They didn’t say anything after that. In fact, they didn’t speak about it again, but that didn’t bother her. They had plenty of time for moments like these, for conversations. In the moment, she was just glad to be with him.
October 31st, 1976
Sirius was dreading Halloween this year. After the incident in May of 1976, Remus had yet to forgive him. Sure, they were speaking occasionally. Remus was never one to draw attention to himself, so they spoke in groups.
But they never once spoke alone, never got the chance to talk about it. Remus entirely blocked him out, and it was driving him insane.
Sirius felt like he’d never get the chance to admit he loved Remus, he felt like it was too late, and maybe it was. And it’s not like he could confess his love now, when things were so bad. He didn’t want to manipulate him, or hurt him, that’s the last thing he wanted.
”Remus, who‘re you snogging in there!” James said, banging on the bathroom door. “The party hasn’t even started yet!”
”Very funny!” Remus said, finally coming out. His lazy smile fell when he saw Sirius, and he promptly walked past them. Sirius felt a pang in his chest.
James sighed, trying to pat down his messy hair. “He’ll talk to you eventually, mate. Don’t give up.”
”Right,” he muttered.
An hour later, Remus was very much drunk, and Sirius was stone cold sober. He felt like an asshole for taking advantage of the moment, but he couldn’t help himself. He dragged Remus up the stairs, and al the time he was yelling, “G’off me, Padfoot, get the hell away from me.”
Sirius sighed and guided him to the bathroom, where he promptly threw up. “Aguamenti.”
”Thanks,” Remus muttered, taking a sip from the goblet. “Now will you leave me alone.”
”I thought we could chat,” he said, trying to keep his voice steady. “You know… about-“
”Nothing to talk about.”
Sirius clasped his hands together. “Remus, please. Say something, say anything! I don’t care if you yell at me, I don’t care if you talk about how much you hate me. I just- I need-“
”Oh, and it’s all about your needs, right?” Remus said, his voice coming at only a whisper. He laughed, a cold dead laugh that sounded so uncharacteristically Remus that Sirius flinched. “Well why didn’t I think about your needs, because you’re always thinking about mine, right? You’re always thinking about how your actions may hurt others, Sirius? I’m the inconsiderate one?”
”That’s not what I meant.” He was currently regretting letting Remus say anything, but the floodgates were already opened.
Remus laughed again, and he seemed to sober up just slightly. “You didn’t mean to hurt me, to ruin my life, but you did. You ruined everything, and nothing you can do will ever fix it, you got that?”
”There has to be something,” Sirius begged. “Please, Remus, I’ll do anything.”
”Anything’s not enough, don’t you get that!” He was yelling now, and crying. “I trusted you with everything, you bastard! You were my everything, my best friend, you fucking idiot!”
He slid to the floor, and Sirius came down with him. He tried to reach out, but Remus started pounding against his chest weakly, crying and screaming. Sirius just took it, and eventually took Remus’ hands in his. He stopped.
”Im sorry,” Sirius muttered. He wrapped his arms around Remus as he continued to sob. “I’m so, so sorry. I know that’s not enough, I’m just sorry.”
October 31st, 1977
“Sirius is going to get caught one day, you know,” Lily said, matter-of-factly. “If he keeps going around as a dog like that.”
”We’re graduating this year anyways!” James said, smiling. He couldn’t help but smile around her. “Thanks for helping me with potions, Head Girl.”
“Of course, thanks for helping me with Defense Against the Dark Arts, Head Boy. We gotta get this done before we head to Hogsmede.”
They were currently doing work on Amortentia, and James was trying very hard to avoid the question of what his smelled like. It was embarrassing enough for Lily that their patronuses were so much alike.
But of course, James was not lucky. She glanced at her notes, then back at him, took a deep breath, and spoke. “So, what does your Amortentia smell like?”
Your perfume, the coconut shampoo you’ve always used, that terrible vanilla lavender concoction you spray around our dorm room every time you enter. “Oh, um. It’s- uh, you see-“
”Oh come on, Potter! Spit it out, you tell me yours and I’ll tell you mine.”
He swallowed his pride and told her exactly what he was thinking, and rather than her hitting him and telling him to bugger off, she did something that surprised him.
Her eyes fluttered closed, she leaned forward, and she kissed him. It was a short, sweet kiss, and she pulled away not soon after, blushing furiously. “Mine smelled like the freshly cut grass on the quidditch pitch, the underground tunnel leading to Honeydukes, like that beloved quidditch jersey you always used to throw at me. I thought you… I didn’t think you felt that way about me anymore.”
”Lily,” James said, honestly surprised he could speak. “I’ve been in love with you since that first Halloween night. I’ve never stopped.”
As James had continuously told Sirius, the waiting was well worth it. Even if it took them years to get together, they would have ten times that many to live happy, fulfilling lives, together.
October 31st, 1978
“Marlene, are you bringing Dorcas tonight? Have you briefed her on the plan?” Remus said, smiling so hard his cheeks hurt.
He had come up with a truly brilliant plan for Halloween that year. They were out of Hogwarts now, and could apparate anywhere they pleased. The war was looming, and he figured everyone could use a bit of cheering up, so he found a haunted festival happening in London, and knew they had to go.
”Of course I am! She’s my girlfriend, you dummy.” She smiled, leaning forward, dropping her voice down to a whisper. “Bringing any special boys?”
”No!” Remus said, looking around to make sure nobody heard. Marlene and Lily were the only ones that knew he was gay. “Ugh, you know I’ve only got eyes for Sirius.”
”And yet you refuse to tell him,” Lily said, jumping into the conversation. “It could go well, you know.”
”Not tonight, please,” he begged. “You girls are always trying to get me to tell him, I’m going insane.”
”Fine, fine, stop whining, we’ll leave it alone-“
”Thank you-“
”For tonight,” Marlene finished with a wink.
The night went smoothly, though James, Peter, Marlene, and Sirius looked slightly out of place with their attempt at muggle clothing. James and Sirius were fascinated by the ferris wheel, and insisted on going on it several times before Remus complained about being sick. They all screamed their way through the haunted corn maze, and James and Lily were disgustingly adorable.
Remus was just happy to spend time with the people he loved more than anything in the world, because things were about to get very, very dangerous.
”I’ve got something to tell you lot,” Remus said, picking at his skin. Marlene and Lily whipped their heads to face him, but he shook his head at them. “I’ve agreed to go on some special missions for Dumbledore.”
”Oh, is that all?” James said brightly, though there was worry evident in his features. “What kind of special missions?”
”Werewolf missions. I’m going to try to infiltrate Greyback’s pack.”
His friends stared at him, their faces going from ones of glee to ones of horror. Sirius spoke first. “No, no, Moony it’s too dangerous. You can’t-“
”I have to,” he said, looking directly at Sirius’ pale blue eyes. “I’m only telling you all because I’m gonna need your help if something goes wrong.”
”Anything for you, Moony,” James said, nodding gravely. Peter was nodding as well.
Lily ran up to him and tackled him in a hug. “Promise me you’ll be okay. Promise me.”
”I promise,” he said. “My first one’s in two weeks.”
”We’re going to win this war,” Mary insisted, hugging him as well. “And then we’re going to spend the rest of our lives being friends.”
”Well, in lighter news,” Lily said, smiling at them, and holding up a hand. There was a large, elegant ring on her finger. “James and I are getting married.”
October 31st, 1979
“Be careful, okay? Promise me you’ll be cautious.” Sirius looked anxious, he always looked anxious now. “I can’t lose you.”
”You always say that, and I’m always careful,” Remus said. He hugged everyone else in the room, and reluctantly hugged Sirius. Being around him still gave him buterflies. “Nothing will happen, don’t worry.”
Oh how wrong he was.
Remus was using his last remaining strength to apparate to the Potter’s. He didn’t know how long he’d been gone. But when he accidentally slammed down in the middle of a London street, he saw kids in costumes walking around.
It was Halloween. He’d been gone for 25 days.
He apparated one last time and managed to reach the Potter’s doorstep and knocked. James threw open the door, and let out a scream of agony, catching Remus as he fell forward. Lily came up behind him and let out a strangled sound, grabbing onto James. “Let’s get him inside. Uh, Remus if you can talk, what movies did we go see on Halloween in 1975?”
”Rocky Horror,” he muttered, his words slurred. He was doing everything in his power to stay awake.
“Bring him in!” Marlene yelled, pulling out her wand and muttering incantations.
Then he saw Sirius, running down the stares. “What is going- Moony? Moony! What happened to him! Is that, is that-“
”It’s his blood,” Danny, Marlene’s older brother mumbled from the corner. “I can’t smell anybody else’s.”
”Oh god,” Sirius said, coming up to him as James set him down on the table. He grabbed Remus’ head lightly, cradling his neck which was practically limp. “Oh god, what happened? What did you do Moony?”
Remus couldn't speak, there was blood in his throat. “Is he going to survive?” Sirius said desperately. “Marlene, please, please, is he going to survive, I can’t-“
”I need you to calm down Sirius, I don’t know. I… I just need to focus right now.”
The last thing Remus saw before passing out from the pain was Sirius’ blue eyes filling with tears and him crying out in agony.
He woke a few hours later, as it was now dark outside. He coughed a few times, his throat dry, and someone was immediately by his side. Marlene. “So, I’m alive?”
She let out a small, meek laugh. “We lost you for a minute there, but yeah. I’m gonna go wake Sirius, he asked me to get him up right when you woke up.”
Remus just nodded, though that caused a pang in his head. He could barely move, but he managed to sit up with Marlene’s help. Sirius barreled down the stairs in dog form before turning back to himself and crouching before Remus, wrapping his arms around him. “Easy, Sirius!” Marlene said
“Sorry, did I hurt you Moony?” Remus shook his head. “God, I’m so glad you’re here. We all… we thought you were dead. It had been so long we… we were preparing for your funeral and.”
He was crying again, and Remus’ heart ached. He hated seeing Sirius so upset. “I’m okay, it’s okay.”
Sirius turned up to him and before Remus could say anything else, Sirius kissed him. “I thought I lost you. I thought I- I didn’t think I’d ever get the chance to tell you that I- I’m in love with you. I have been for years.”
”I love you too,” Remus said, kissing him again and smiling. “I love you too, it’s okay Padfoot. It’s okay, I’m here now.”
”Never do that to me again, okay? Promise me.”
”I promise, I won’t ever leave you again.”
October 31st, 1980
For Harry’s first Halloween, he was dressed as a quidditch player. James insisted on it, and Lily went along with it reluctantly. Really, she couldn’t be more happy. Her son looked adorable in his little robes.
”That’s my boy!” Sirius yelled when he walked in the door, hand in hand with Remus.
“My boy,” James corrected, bringing both of them into a hug. “We’re so glad you could come over.”
”Well of course! The girls and Peter should be here soon, if Peter can get off of work tonight.” Remus was smiling and reached for Harry, who babbled and grabbed onto his finger. “How’s Harry? How are you both? Are you sleeping?”
”Hardly!” Lily said with a laugh. “We haven’t gotten a wink of sleep in days, but it’s alright. Our Harry is as precious as can be. How’s the war effort?”
”You literally ask that every day,” Sirius said with a tsk. “Focus on Harry! We’re getting closer, don’t even worry about it.”
Lily could tell it was a lie, Remus told her how badly they were losing. But she took the lie gratefully.
Remus smiled and pulled out a bag of candy, pouring it onto the table.
”Now, I say we turn Halloween on the telly and get this party started.
Marlene and her wife, Dorcas, arrived a moment later, crushing Lily in a hug. Mary came in soon after, and Peter didn’t arrive for an hour, but came in with a new record, so no one was complaining.
Halloween 1980 was spent surrounded with friends, and Lily once again couldn’t help but think it was the best Halloween ever, and she couldn’t wait till the war was over. She couldn’t wait to spend the rest of her life with her friends, the love of her life, and Harry.
She had so much to look forward to, and so much time.
October 31st, 1981
“One day, when this is all over, were gonna travel the world. We’re gonna dress up in muggle clothes and I'm gonna take you to all the most amazing spots in the world. Just you, me, and Harry.”
“Remus and Sirius can come too, if they’d like, Peter as well if he can get away from his ministry job,” Lily said with a smile. She was always so polite about James’ ramblings. They didnt sleep much nowadays, what with Harry and the war constantly looming.
James covered his face with a pillow. “Ugh, but Remus and Sirius always steal Harry whenever they come over, we wont see our son the entire trip.”
“I think I hear Harry fussing up, I’m gonna go see if he’s alright,” she said, jumping out of bed. James pulled her down for a lingering kiss. “You go check the protection spells, alright?”
“Sure thing, happy halloween, my love. Next year, we’ll spend it with everyone again, I promise.” He wasn’t completely sure of that, but he had to believe, he had to have hope, it was the only thing that’d keep him from going crazy.
James always regretted, more than anything, that his last words to Lily were a lie.
