Chapter 3

The small forest where the Pack had made their home never showed signs of life outside of the cave. It was too risky. But inside the cave, the coppers would get a big surprise at how lively it was. Flare cracked terrible jokes and puns as he singed his hair. Chalk, named after his pale-white skin, liked drawing, which he would often do on spare pieces of paper, or, if it was a big piece of art, on the sketchbook he'd nicked from a school boy a few years back. Silver was almost always on the small alcove near the top of the cave when she was inside, and if anyone misbehaved she would jump down swiftly and kick them, or scold them, depending how young they were. Jack and Jill, twins who had escaped from a travelling circus with rules so harsh they were both blinded in their left eye, were often out and about, getting money from performing tricks on the street. Worm had a penchant for living up to his name, digging escape tunnels with his tiny hands. And Raven? His favorite past time was using his 'freak' abilities to entertain Flare and Worm.

--------------

It was midnight, with Silver on 2nd watch, when everyone heard a 'crack'. Everyone sat up, Worm peeking out of his little hidey-hole that he had been using to sleep. "Silver?" Chalk's raspy voice was barely a whisper, not that it could go any louder due to throat damage. "Sssh. I'll go check. Be back in a minute," she tip-toed out of the cave. "Raven?" "mh. Got it," he snapped his fingers, and a glamour only they could see through fell over the cave, hiding it. "Silver?" "Anyone know a man with hair like sand and an impressive amount of scars?" there was silence as she crept back in. "Thought so. Stay here. Take 3rd watch, Raven, Flare,"

------------------

It was morning when they though it was safe to venture out, only to find a giant group of people just outside the watch area. Worm, who'd seen them first, yelped and dove to the right, landing in one of his many tunnels. Everyone else followed his lead, jumping up onto trees and making their escape.

Minerva glared at Albus. "I told you it was a bad idea!"
